Merc The Sergal Apparently most people killed Toriel because when you spare her she goes "..." and it doesn't work. People assume I suppose that that means Spare isn't a viable option anymore, and instead start to attack her. I went into the fight knowing she wouldn't truly want to hurt me because she wanted me to stay. So if I let her beat me up while I didn't do anything, she'd eventually crack.

I myself didn't know you could spare her the first time I played the game, until halfway through the fight. Talking didn't work, I thought she HAD to be yellow to spare her, and she was attacking me. I was prepared to kill her. Than I saw her attacks were missing me on purpose. At that point, I lost the will to fight. I went to spare, and did it, even though she wasn't yellow, and I spared her. I swear though, I felt HORRIBLE for hurting her after seeing she never intended to kill me.

Atticus Zed Are either A: an absolute monster, or B: On the wrong track. I fell under B on my first playthrough. My first playthrough, the only one who died by my hand was TORIEL, resulting in something Undyne says not making sense and me blaming Flowey like I always do before getting the True Ending. After the True Ending I like to think he's not so bad anymore. Especially after what he says to YOU, THE PLAYER, after you boot the game back up after getting the True Ending.

I killed Toriel, I was trying to talk to her, I didn't think the Spare button did anything on itself and I was pretty stressed by the attacks coming at me. But afterwards, it was easier to be pacifist onwards, I spared all the other monsters afterwards. But you know what, it made my first run more unique, I could literally enjoy the entire game (though, I was still thinking if there was a way to spare her). Alot of people don't respect their first run and immedietly reset, but I never did that, because I wanted to experience the game itself and what it had to offer on my first playthrough.

I didn't kill her very first playthrough, I was absolutely determined never to fight in my first run. It got stretched almost a full night after I reached Agore though. I was convinced I could go through it peacefully, especially as his dialogue changes up to 10 times every time you die. I got so used to his attack patterns that they literally had to speed up to a point it was physically impossible to dodge for me to game over after some point.

Most of the people who killed Toriel were not trying to, and expected the game to be able to model "attacking someone until they submit, without murdering them". Then they reset, and Flowey chews them out for not anticipating the game's failure to communicate what is supposed to be happening.

+Huitzil37 What happened to me. Thought if I got her just low enough I could hit spare and it would work. Too bad the last hit does like 500+ damage. SPOILERS BELOW Ironically, this fight is what killed me in my first fight with Asgore. I stubbornly kept talking to him thinking it would make a difference and he eventually whittled me down. Find out what I initially did to Toriel is what you're supposed to do with him.

+Huitzil37 Yeah I agree, when the game has you randomly do 300 damage out of fucking nowhere when no previous fight had anything like that was bullshit. If I had kept doing steady damage and got her health really low, I would have stopped attacking and tried something else. But the game doesn't let you do that. It basically forces you to kill her when you don't mean to. Kinda silly to then try and guilt trip you over it. Otherwise, the game is fantastic. That one aspect didn't need to be there though.

+The Terrible Bullet Dodger Yeah, that's the problem. She's such a basic character and that's why the only times you see her are in the beginning and the end. Look at anyone else in the game, like Sans, Undyne, or Alphys. You learn more about them as their characters develop (Alphys especially) and see what makes them unique. Other than the fact that she used to be the queen, Toriel doesn't develop at all and you never learn anything about her or experience anything with her throughout the game up to the end. Maybe it's just an opinion, but static characters are almost always more boring than dynamic characters.

+joseph leocadio I'm going to agree with you on her character being static but you can't change the fact that unlike any other RPG game such as Pokemon (where your mother literally sends you off without any care in the world) Toriel, the motherly figure shows that she IS caring and warm-hearted. She literally holds your hand through a puzzle. And it's that right there where Toby makes the player have a connection with Toriel even though she isn't a dynamic character.

Notice Sans and Papyrus, whom we know also share a very close bond, arw connected.. Brotherly love, but love all the same Yet oddly enough, Undyne and Alphys are not. Because they have only begun their relationship and aren't as close as them yet. Yet Asgore and Toriel are connected. Should you choose to direct all your "saves" at one of them, the other.will follow suite. Toriel does not hate Asgore. She loves him. She has shown to speak before thinking before as well, such as in this fight. So it is not unreasonable to assume she said what she said out of spite.

I honestly love how the songs in Undertale show you a character's motives. Toriel's theme sounds similar to Asgore's, who is filled with hope, to save his people, willing to sacrifice you for it. Toriel, on the other hand, wants to seem like she's willing to hurt you and even leave you near death for the sake of you not leaving, but that's not really what she wants to do. This is shown by the fact heartache seems like it's gonna escalate, but it doesn't happen, it stays in a similar phase, and deescalates.
