undertale is 100% toby's heart and soul, it's full of jokes but is also very sincere, so it definitely draws you in with both comedy and heartfelt emotions. it's an RPG with inspiration from all sorts of games of toby's childhood, such as touhou, mario, earthbound, and moon (which only recently got localized officially actually!). this song plays during a miniboss and it actually kind of does have a side scroller minigame as its gimmick lol. a lot of undertale's songs are pretty short and loop while youre in whatever place the song plays, but it works out since most areas and fights pass by pretty quickly, and the songs are super catchy that you don't get tired of them. toby actually got to have an interview together with ZUN, and one of my favourite parts of it was toby telling ZUN that he made and played a piano arrangement of a touhou song, necrofantasia, for his summer church camp, and ZUN was just like, your church let you play a song called necrofantasia??

It’s funny that you say that this reminds you of Touhou, because Toby Fox has taken inspiration from Touhou and has been a Touhou fan since middle school! While Toby has stronger musical inspirations from the Mother series, Mother 1, Earthbound/Mother 2 and Mother 3, Toby’s Touhou inspirations is evident in some songs and is sprinkled throughout the entire soundtrack. Undertale’s game structure is a lot closer to a Mother game and his music reflects the higher use of motifs, and emotional songs that fit a story-based game. Even so, it’s hard not to make a comparison between the two. Undertale also has some bullet hell as part of its battle system. Finally, Toby uses a Zunpet in an Undertale song. Toby uses a wider variety of instruments than Zun and Toby has more diverse music that can differentiate itself more, but I still personally think Zun is a stronger composer with more and stronger bangers. Toby is easily a better writer though and doesn’t need to write supplementary material, but it’s still cool that Zun does. I don’t know if you remember this or not, but Toby made all parts of the game(except for the sprite work, but I’m pretty sure he still made the character designs). Toby also made the music and built the game around it and composed some years before he even started making the game.

There are actually, indeed, dancing spiders during the part where this track plays. Of all the tracks in the game, this is up there as a favorite for many reasons from the character it themes and how amazing it's melody is. Dummy! is another track that's quite up there. The game itself is styled in a more retro aesthetic of design, look and various gameplay and references scattered throughout. It has a lot of heart and soul in it showcased throughout by Toby Fox himself and the wonderful people who joined him with some of the character designs and such, the one that shows up for this song being Muffet, a wonderful Spider Lady!

Funny you say it has a "haunting" feel. The main leitmotif of this song actually first shows up in a battle against against a literal ghost (while in this particular battle where Spider Dance plays it is against... well... a spider). Later there is another battle that shares this leitmotif with a theme called "Dummy!", which is against yet another ghost, this time one that has possessed... well... a dummy. And even later still, in Undertale's "sister game" called Deltarune, this leitmotif shows up again in the form of the theme songs for a character named Spamton, though the leitmotif itself has its notes switched around, but it is still recognizable (unless of course you count one of Spamton's battles where the Dummy! leitmotif shows up in that particular battle's theme twice just for about a second each time). Toby Fox really loves leitmotifs, as you can see.

I love how Toby managed to capture the idea of a spider crawling around just from the music. The time signature is in 4/4 but you could almost argue it's also 8/8 with how the measures are grouped together, and 8/8 makes way more sense for a song about spiders what with having 8 legs and all lol.

I think the way I might describe this is "playfully frantic". It plays during a boss fight: Muffet, and she is one of my favourite characters and probably favourite boss. It really suits the actual fight because a few of the sections of the fight involve a chase, essentially, where you're trying to get away from her attacks.

One interesting part of the soundtrack is the evolution you can hear the farther into the game you come, it starts out VERY 8bit with few channels, starts moving into 16bit, keeps mixing it up until the massive climax at the end. Some tracks are changes throughout the track itself, but you can guess how far into the game the song will appear depending on how complex the song is.
@JazzyWaffles
@JazzyWaffles Жыл бұрын
"It has a little bit of a haunting feel, kind of." Funny you mention that! In addition to the spider boss this specific song is used for, one of the leitmotifs in this song (the one after the beat drops) is also used for two other enemies in the game, both of them being ghosts! You can almost think of it as the "Halloween" leitmotif (though the skeleton bosses get their own leitmotifs and themes to work with).

New sub! So, fateful story: I stumbled onto this epic series thanks to Toby Fox and, mainly, my wife who has been playing Pokémon Scarlet/Violet that wisely employed this genius for their premier song spots. Like yourself, I have not played the series since it came out in the 90s, however, as an avid gamer and fellow audiophile, I have long fought in the crusades for the wildly underated artists of epic video game music. After spending mere minutes watching my wife play, mostly when the "cool stuff" was happening, I was exposed to the devious genius that is Toby Fox's song, which I can only describe as the perfect Lay's Potato Chip music. One chip (playthough) is small (2 min)and is never enough. Two really exposes the hidden notes you missed the first time around, and the new blend makes you appreciate the depth you previously missed. Before you even realize it, you've eaten handfuls, and it brings you a nostalgic sense of joy that can only lead to heart failure lol. You have a true appreciation for good music, so when your fans inevitably force you to react to the Tera Battle Theme of Pokémon SC/VI, just remember to put the chips down and walk away. Pure. Evil. 🤣🤟

I don't want to say too much about Undertale's gameplay, in case you ever decide to play it for yourself, but it is a very retro styled rpg-esque game. That's the best way to put it without giving away all the cool stuff that gives the game it's unique identity. It's definitely something every person has to experience for themselves.

With Undertale, the music is front and center in a way you rarely see in games, even games in the same genre. Undertale was written so holistically and so thoughtfully, so meticulously that you can't imagine *any part of it* being different, in my opinion. I think calling it a character-driven experience is only half the story, because everything about everything is used to express its ideas. Music isn't just music, battles aren't just battles, jokes aren't just jokes. Every little bit of the experience is used to advance something. It's remarkable just how much is packed into it.

So far you've listened to the typical 8-bit soundtrack of Undertale (I'd say), something you'd expect from a game like this. But there is way more to Undertale's soundtrack then it looks, because it has all different sorts of music styles. You should try for example more calm "Fallen Down" or orchestral and emotional main theme "Undertale" and others.

A lot of what you said is right. It's a game that I couldn't imagine with any other soundtrack. As for serious vs. comedy, it does both and does have some more mysterious undertones but some do get kinda spoopy. It gets pretty blatantly meta as well, a part of it I felt aged poorly, but it was cool at the time. Also, this is a boss theme and the "spider" in "spider dance" is more literal than figurative. Funnily enough it's a "remix of a remix" if I remember correctly, the other remix being in the game, and the Nintendo Switch exclusive boss has a remix of this theme. So.... A lot of remixing going on here. Either way, it's a fun little track for an interesting boss.

I know that this is an insanely popular game that could be hard to get into for that reason, but you just have to believe us, its this popular FOR A REASON. To make an insanely broad overview, yes, this is a modern game that fits the JRPG genre, but believe me when I say that it takes all of what you're used to in this genre of game, and flips it upside down. Toby Fox wanted to make this game different, and that he did perfectly. I highly urge recommend you to start your own playthrough of the game while you're still pretty much blind. This game's fandom likes to spoil every which way possible, intentionally or unintentionally. I have a special place in my heart for this game and I hopefully you could feel the same way.

Much longer, and it's by far the song Toby spent the most time with on the game. And it definitely shows. Would certainly love to see you react to Hopes and Dreams as well, or even some Deltarune tracks like Field of Hopes and Dreams or A Cyber's World. To give you an idea of what the game is like. Undertale's gameplay is largely inspired by Earthbound with the main difference being the combat. It's turn-based, but when an enemy attacks you it suddenly turns into a bullet-hell (like Touhou). Aside from just attacking and killing enemies you can also 'act' and fight them with kindness. Which kind of turns the attacking into a puzzle game.

Toby Fox is a very interesting person, and is considered one of the more interesting video game composers of this generation. If anything, he is best known for being a "Master of Motifs" where he's been known to connect several pieces together under common motifs and melodies that are associated with characters and scenes, mixing them together in interesting ways to reference previous or future portions of the game, or even OTHER games. Toby is also known for his exceptional skill as a composer in making deceptively complex music that's hidden under a simple, "catchy" melody. His musical structure and subtle use of DAW effects and soundfonts to create his unique but familiar sound is what appeases both the casual listener but also can be a rabbit hole for musical theory nerds trying to deconstruct it. It's solid enough to where it translates pretty seamlessly into an orchestral composition, which was played live for the 5th anniversary of the game's release. It's very long at over an hour, but definitely worth a listen to after you become familiar with the game's soundtrack. This skill extends past Undertale and into the "sequel" series of sorts, "Deltarune" which also has a similarly unique and interesting soundtrack which is worth looking into. And yes, Toby got much of his early inspiration off of Zun and Touhou, as well as other earlier Nintendo games like Earthbound. And retroactively, Toby's popularity has got himself to start meeting his former inspirations throughout Japan, interviewing with Zun and rubbing shoulders and do the occasional gig for Nintendo.

Undertale is an interesting game... It's a JRPG, but the battles involve bullet hell style mechanics, but they can also be puzzles or just straight slaughter, depending on how you choose to play... It's a fairly meta and/or subversive game, but not so much that it overpowers everything else... And then, regardless of everything else, it has a lot of heart... A charming world full of charming characters... And a lot of the music slaps hard lol. I'd say that visually it is more in the 16bit era, like the SNES or Megadrive/Genesis, but not entirely... You could say similar for the music, but it doesn't strictly all stay within the 16bit wheelhouse, with somewhat more advanced synths being used at times... The game mechanics and music and whatever else are well integrated into the story too... All of this added up to make a game that captured a lot of people's hearts... The music being a big part of that... In using a few themes in various ways, Toby made much of the music very nostalgic, even within the span of a single playthrough of about 6 hours or something... Depending on various factors you could play a bit shorter or a lot longer, but yeah, not super long lol. I totally recommend a playthrough (although, if you do, be very careful about very passionate people potentially spoiling or backseating you... They mean well, but can arguably stop you having the best experience with the game)... I suggest at least one totally blind playthrough, then maybe let people you trust not to overly spoil you to guide you to some of the cool stuff you might have missed... Although, if you want to play efficiently to get the best ending, you could have someone give you the one essential requirement for that, but then you might miss out on other neat things that the game does... Up to you... Even if you mess it up, you can speed through the game again pretty quickly once you've played through once, most likely.

But your channel is not a gaming channel with let's plays, and I think it would be nice for you to react to some more songs blind before playing it, so we can see your reaction top it. But after you have reacted to some more songs, or knowing undertale fans, most of the soundtrack. I can only scincerly recommend you to play the game. It's a retro styled RPG that gets better and better the longer you play it. It is very heartfelt and just works in all aspects. Also if you want to see something newer from Toby, I recommend listening to some Deltarune songs, Deltarune being his sequel game that is still in development and only has 2 of 7 chapters released.
