Haha I plan to do this for the other two, Genocide was just the shortest and therefore easiest to start with. I can't catch all of your streams, since I'm an arch student and I didn't even get Thanksgiving break without having to spend most of it working on a project, but Undertale is tied with 4 other games for my favorite game of all time, so I watched all of this run through. I never thought I'd get a computer of my own to play it on, so I watched a bunch of youtubers play it before I got a chance to play it myself. Watching people play unspoiled runs always recaptures the magic I wish I had gotten when I finally played, and I love to come back to them now and again. I think one of the things I really like about the Geno run is that unlike a lot of other games where good/evil is like different power colors is that in the geno run no one likes you. It treats you like an actual bad person. The note in the shop, the ghost just leaves, and some of the characters just are off doing other things so you don't see them. You see the same characters but different sides of them, and it's really interesting to me because it slowly starts changing focus and you become the enemy. Like the game treats you like you're the main villain, which you are. That's why Undyne and Sans get that awesome music. In essence they've become the new heroes trying to stop you.
@EuroMIX27 жыл бұрын
There's definitely an argument to be made about whether games should focus on being fun for the player, and I know that some people might hate Undertale for essentially punishing them for wanting to see all it has to offer by going down the truly villainous route, especially because some other games let you be bad, or focus on that primarily, and often make it "cool" or try to make it fun to be that way, but Undertale makes being the villain painful and discouraging, and only those truly dedicated to it will see it through. Whether this is a good thing or not is obviously down to personal opinion. I think it's a very smart approach, though I'll admit I'm glad I know what happens, and I feel it brings out the best in certain characters (I like Geno!Undyne more than how the other routes portray her because I find her more justified in her actions), even though I doubt I could ever bring myself to play the route.
@MrNinjaBurger7 жыл бұрын
It's interesting because normal Undyne is just playing at being a hero. She's a good fighter (comparatively), but she's just pretending the way she saw in anime. Geno Undyne sees what you've done, and protects monster kid and takes a lethal blow. She then reforms and becomes an actual hero trying to stop a villain, in this case, you. Hell her song is even called "the heroine appears">

While other games don't do much between their "Hero/Villain" routes, there's still something to be said about how the games play out. I assume you're referring to the Infamous series, where a lot of people may come to the conclusion that the only difference in your good or evil "choice" is what color your lightning or smoke is. And while that was mostly the case in Infamous 1, Infamous 2 had many different missions that were only accessable by making the good or evil decisions. You'd be locked out of one power set until after you beat the game, and the endings were so vastly different that you'd definitely be missing out if you only played the game one time. I can assure you, you do not feel awesome for beating Infamous 2 the evil route All that being said, Undertale definitely approaches this better than any other game that comes to mind, especially when compared to games such as Mass Effect 3.

No shit, I think it would be insurmountable task to find everything there is to find in undertale on your own without analyzing the level data :-) For example, there is unique dialogue for aborting a genocide run at the papyrus fight, in which he expresses that he was actually afraid that you would "do a violence" (showing he wasn't being completely naive there). [1] In the judgement hall, Sans noticing it's not the first time you've been there is not exclusive to Genocide run, it happens in neutral too, and it actually lets you gain access to his room and his workshop. [2] Sans also calls you out if you mess with your save data to reset your LV to 1 after having killed monsters. [3] And there's really a ton of variations possible for his phone call after the neutral ending [5], including one that can only be triggered by hacking your save data into a normally unreachable configuration. I guess I'll type some shit while the grinding takes place. You're talking a lot about the intent behind making the genocide run so tedious. I like the two ideas you came up with to justify it (to prevent accidental genocide, to make you feel like a predator), but I personally find the genocide run makes the most sense if you approach it with the assumption that you're doing something unnatural- a part of the game that simply wasn't meant to exist. In many ways, it's basically designed to be the most miserable way to play the game possible (you skip all the puzzles and diversions, most NPCs are removed, the music gets mangled, the combat system is reduced to huge stretches of mind numbing grinding, and every boss is either a nihilistic anticlimax or a fuck-you difficulty spike), so the not-so-subtle question the game is asking you is "why the fuck are you still playing this?", to which you can only respond "I heard there would be new content" (this pretty much sums up the punchline of the geno run in general). It's the equivalent of finding some kid who'll do anything on a dare and pushing to see just how far they'll go. I imagine Toby kinda cut loose and enjoyed himself designing this route once he realized that he could fuck the player as hard as he wanted and they would have nobody to blame but themselves.
@aturchomicz8216 жыл бұрын

@Android4805 жыл бұрын
Beautifully said. I can't tell you how many times I was walking back and forth in hotland, bored out of my mind, wondering why in the hell I was still doing this thing. Like, what was I getting out of it? It really makes you question what your motivations are, how far will you go just to see one more secret nugget of exposition. How fucking ridiculous is it to spend hours intentionally boring yourself to murder the few remaining NPCs just to see what youtube can show you already. I even threw on a podcast for most of the grind, rather than just accept this is a ridiculous task I've assigned to myself. Really its a neat idea on Toby Fox's part, it reminds me of Stanley Parable or Infinite Jest, or anything that goes out of its way to comment on the absurdity of the consumer themselves. Or laugh in their face, more often. I think professors call it postmodernism. I feel like this sort of progression happens when any medium becomes starkly aware of itself. Like, isn't this thing close to what Don Quixote was about back in the 1600s? Not that I even got through that book, but there comes a point in every art form, and in every movement inside every art form, where it just collapses in on itself. I mean, even just recently, you can start with Quixote and eventually get all the way to Faulkner, and then to Pynchon, and then to DFW, and then the whole segment is destroyed and reborn, ready to be fucked with all over again. And thats just one branch of one genre of novels, every other branch has had their own black hole of self-awareness implode in on them. Fuck, even the shallowest form of cinema, look at Cabin in the Woods or Get Out and you can see the the horror genre toy with itself to failure. As far as video games go, I'm not saying Undertale did it first, far far from it. Theres an argument to be made about MSG being the first real mainstream 4th wall breaking title in video games, even though it happened dozens of times before, and thousands of times since. But Undertale has that same unique quality of being both a really fucking great game, and a game thats absolutely about deconstructing the genre. It can stand on its own as a game, but it can also stand as an examination of games. I sound like melodramatic a toby fox twitter warrior here, I realize how weird it is to relate this game to Don Quixote or whatever. This isn't the second coming of AV christ, but it is something that will influence the genre for years to come. The genocide run is an important piece of it, I'm glad it was made the way it was.

Megalovania gets all the hype but honestly Battle Against a True Hero is simply one of the best songs I've heard in a game. It's unbelievably epic, I get shivers every time I hear that Piano.

The genocide run comments on how far the player will go to find new dialogue and secrets. The game goes out of its way to make you the bad guy and give you the choice to do horrible things, which eventually, you will take the worst option to see what happens. The genocide run was made to be entirely the player's choice and be very tedious in order to hammer home the fact that the player us intentionally being evil and murdering innocent monsters. The tedious feel of the run is obviously intentional to stop the players from feeling bad about killing everything and to give a sense of satisfaction after grinding all the mobs in the area. The rate of encounters when the player has killed all the mobs are more common to give the impression that the player is looking for monsters to fight and becoming a predator. This brings a whole new meaning to the first genocide run as in the pacifist and neutral runs the player just encounters monsters and the player has to try to escape. Whereas the genocide player wants to fight and this provides a change of pace as the battles are shorter and most monsters aren't able to get in even one line of dialogue before they are obliterated. Only too late does the player realise their mistake, as Chara kills the player and takes control of the game without anyone, player or character, to stop them and it's all the player's fault.

I do heavily disagree with him on the subject of Alphys... she doesn't have two sides to her, and that's the point. The nerd who infodumps about anime is the same person who desecrated bodies. You don't have to be cruel, ruthless, or intimidating to do bad things. I think this drives home just how much this was a mistake for her. She could never intentionally hurt anyone.

Little thing I don't see many people mention about sans' purple poison stuff is, that it's not actually poison. It makes the fight EASIER. His attacks, instead of reducing your health outright, it converts your health into purple health which decreases over time on it's own. If the purple health mechanic didn't exist, upon being reduced to 1 health you'd instantly die, but WITH the purple health mechanic, you're given a huge buffer to survive with 1 health. On the very last attack of the fight, this is demonstrated. His final attack heavily nerfs the purple health mechanic (to prevent you from buffering through the hard parts) so you die much faster with a shorter buffer. The downside to this mechanic is that healing to full health after being damaged doesn't get rid of the purple health, so you keep losing health even after healing to full. This downside doesn't really matter though, because you usually never heal yourself to full.

One of the things not enough people playing the genocide run know is that you don't actually have to worry about going to far without killing all the monsters, because if you actually try to do that the game will warn you about it
@grktn37625 жыл бұрын
Seriously? I didn't know that How does it do that? When I did genocide I just killed everybody in the first room lol
@ExaltedUriel4 жыл бұрын
Actually, the only time it warns you is before you're about to cross the bridge before the Undyne fight. If you get close the dialogue box will come up in red saying "* Shouldn't proceed yet." You can still proceed despite this and botch the run but that's the only point where the game actually warns that you haven't met your quota before going to a new area.

The only thing I liked about the genocide route was that, the game was made that you could enjoy the final fight with sans (if you're that kind of masochist) and STILL go back and decide not to complete the genocide route, and it won't ruin your game forever. For that insane 1% that just wanted to fight Sans, not see what happens.

When you shank Toriel and she gives you the "you hate me" speech, does she _know_ that she's really talking to Chara? It's eerie just how fitting her words are here if you remember the context of the backstory involved.
@omegastar193 жыл бұрын
It seems Toriel and Asgore are semi-aware of what is really going on on some instinctual level, probably because they are boss monsters, whereas Sans figured things out through science.

In a sense you have to go out of your way to kill all the monsters, but the save points and Flowey do encourage you to start slaughtering everything almost like an objective. But it does take some determination to walk around so long to encounter them all

Hey Joe, I know this is a long time late but if you're still interested in doing genocide as your first playthrough you can go into the game's AppData and set all of the characters, everything's numerical value back to zero. It's even more of a reset than the "True Reset" because even at that point the game still remembers some stuff. You're probably not interested in it anymore, but if you just happen to be, here you go!
