I totally agree that the DOOM hunter boss is the make or break point in the game, and I didn't get it. Leading up to it on Cultist Base, the first outdoor arena with multiple Mancubi was the thing that broke my first Nightmare run and forced me to step it down to UV (I just wanted to get through the game so I could watch reviews and speedrun at this point) and I wasn't playing the game right. I wasn't hot swapping and using all my items with twitch reflexes. On my current playthrough, I hit a wall at the exact same spot, on Nightmare. I was better at using my grenades and flamethrower, but still didn't really have the hot swapping down. I ground myself into a paste, trying to force myself to swap weapons, dying over and over again, and then the get actually crashed and I just went to bed. I woke up the next day, died a couple more times, leaned back and closed my eyes for a minute or two and just found a calm before sitting back up. Then something clicked and the whole game just totally broke open for me and it's fucking magic. I played through it once before, 1/3 on NM, then 1/3 on UV, then ending the last 1/3 on HMP (TBF I was working 70 hour weeks at the time, so part of my problem was just that I kept getting stuck and then not playing for 2 weeks and coming back stuck at a bad checkpoint while also being rusty.) Point is, I clearly still had enough fun playing it at a lower level to come back for more, but the game doesn't really "sing" until you completely nail a couple of core ideas and reflexes. Playing Doom Eternal right is like finally nailing a kick flip or playing a tricky chord or figuring out how to crack an egg with one hand; you can get away with working around learning the thing, but getting it right feels so good. Fucking up a mancubus in 2 seconds flat after it spent a whole level wiping its ass with you is soooooo satisfying, and nailing the skills that let you do that will also pay off for the rest of the game. I first got a shaky feel for the play with the Mancubi. I REALLY nailed in the trial by fire of the Doom Hunters, though. It forced me to perfect it and really force my brain to understand that this is how it needs to be done.

Same here. I'm really not any good mind you! I play with a controller. I beat the game on easy. Today, I beat the Icon Of Sin on normal (it needed to happen as the longer he remains on Earth, the stronger he becomes). Yes I still used a controller, but with my better understanding on the mechanics, quick swapping, more sensible weapon mod switching etc, I can't wait to actually learn to play this and gear up for ultra violence with a keyboard and mouse. There’s more than one way - an example, a single heat blast charge will falter a doom hunter - opening up for a blood punch. While I have only played through Doom Eternal itself a couple times, and find it to be more frustrating than fun a lot of the time (especially in the first couple levels), it did prompt me to come up with a really ergonomic and fast weapon key setup, which has helped a lot in every other game I play (especially Quake Champions). I mean, I really like the quickswap weakpoint setup game that DE has, I just find myself doing pretty well until I make one or two mistakes and get shut down, which gets frustrating quite quickly.

@princetchalla24414 жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, in high level Battlemode matches only the Ballista and Scoped-in Assault rifle is used, with some guys even swapping their bindingsfor those weapons to 1&2 respectively. I had a ton of fun shit talking the chaingun in Doom 2016 until it was the last gun with ammo that I had and the regular old assault rifle wasn’t doing enough to stagger the baron, and I didn’t have a single bullet or chainsaw jerrycan left because I was bad. Chaingun came into clutch though, and I managed to get through by the skin of my teeth. In Eternal you’re supposed to use every weapon (keep in mind I know it is fun no matter how you play) but I noticed it’s not always as clear cut as “you can use this gun most effectively at this time, but this can be used too” which is great in theory, but I get enraged whenever something doesn’t work, like blood punch. Then when I pull out another gun in a panic there’s a chance I get stuck and combo’d by fodder or some shit, which drove me to keep using the SSG meathook to escape a shit ton. I managed to beat Ultra-Nightmare, but Ballista, SSG, and Scoped Assault Rifle are the best weapons, (Rocket Launcher is ok too, but not as easy to abuse in battlemode or on heavies until you invest in the lock-on mechanic or spam remote detonation behind walls for multiplayer) whereas I found myself preferring the plasma gun over all of them, but often it wouldn’t deal enough stagger damage for me to win. My favorite part of the game was beating the Doom Hunter for the first time, then seeing two more spawn and somehow beating them on my first try. Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much fun in some of the later levels because those three guns outclass the others and trying to avoid using them wasn’t easy. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still fun to use, but I got sick of trying to blood punch an armored demon, getting stuck/stunned by the AOE green fart (even if I froze him the blood punch didn’t always work in time) then dying to some gargoyle who caught up to me. This lead to me just spamming those three into him because it was faster and more reliable. From watching speed runners I learned you can freeze them, grenade them twice, then blood punch them, but in the middle of a fire fight that’s not always optimal for me.

Man I still can't believe people go on about how hard and limiting Eternal is. I've never to this day been able to beat anything except Knee Deep in the Dead on Hurt Me Plenty when it comes to classic Doom but I was able to beat Eternal on Ultra Violence my first run once the game clicked with me. Eternal is clearly teaching you every step of the early stages, practically beating you over the head with optimal methods when you struggle. Eternal will wipe its ass with your face over and over until it clicks, when you become a fucking death god. The gameplay loop is so simple to learn and understand, with some very obvious weaknesses to bring down most tougher enemies if you struggle. But it also offers you the shooter equivalent to a DMC game. Encouraging you to make the best use of what you have, pushing you to get better until you wonder how you ever had trouble with it. Linking up multiple Cacodemon glory kills to act as a DMC enemy step, letting you stay and move around the air for extended periods by masterfully managing the enemies for example. Not just killing them but keeping them alive for the purpose of doing cool shit later. Etermal is a hard game because it respects the player. It knows how powerful you have the potential to be and keeps pushing you until you know it too.
@ExeErdna4 жыл бұрын
DMC has an easier time due to the POV and the lack of ammo. It's more spongey than hard, more HP just makes you make mistakes by making you fatigued. The problem with Eternal that I understand is that the weakness aren't fun for some people it turns gameplay into a "braindead" puzzle you have the counter and must use the counter. DMC has optimization yet more gameplay freedom. Eternal streamlines the fun zone too much personally that it would turn people off. After like 6 play throughs, super gore nest is easily my favorite level. When I first got there tho, I hated it. I died over and over cause I just didn’t “get it.” I was playing sloppy and slow. As I leaned (the hard way) just by playing and listening to the feedback and fun the game was giving me, I became a much better player. Doom eternal is my favorite game ever now and I think the fun zone was a giant reason for that. There’s so much depth there if you want to use it. If not, you don’t have to, but you might have to bump down the difficulty, die more, or play in a way that just isn’t as engaging.

God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Batman Arkham series, Doom Eternal. Pretty much any game that has a combat system like this, are all my favorites. It's the ultimate fun house that rewards combat knowledge, you can still beat these games without it, but rewards exist almost exclusively for the players that do understand it. Especially in higher difficulties.

Doom Eternal is so great, that when I got into the Halo games this year I just saw how the aggressive, hot-swapping doesn't work really well with Halo. I'm not saying Halo's bad because of it, but I hope future fps combat puzzle games can learn from Doom and it's fun zone.

@@MintyLime703 Actually its not the weapon swapping I realized, though it does take time away (which is a necessity in higher difficulties) the main problem is the difficulty balancing of higher difficulties. Halo 2 Legendary was so hard.

@@MintyLime703 Imo halo 2 and reach are the worst when it comes to weapon sandboxes. In halo 2 legendary the noob combo and snipers are far above every other option, and in reach legendary every gun except precision weapons and plasma pistols are too weak. Even the Spartan Laser struggles to kill high ranking elites and some vehicles in one hit. I think halo 5's sandbox is much better than the 2 above games. H4's is boring and doesn't give you enough ammo, h3/odst's is pretty good overall but could use some tweaks to make them both perfect, and h1 has the best sandbox overall, but the AR needs accuracy buff, and the needler also needs a buff.

Tbh I think the 2 best decisions on Id's part was to limit the ammo and certain demon weaknesses it allows the player to not rely on 1 gun throughout the game and find another way to deal with the enemy because one enemy may be weak against the heavy cannon but another one might not have that same weakness he maybe weak against the SSG this allows more creativity in gameplay.

I really enjoy your videos about Doom Eternal. I didn't buy the game until last year (2022) because I haven't been a fan of FPS games in a long time, the only exception was Doom 2016. I play it all the time now. At first, I never used the ballista. It took so long to cooldown that I thought it was useless, which was a let down because the gauss rifle was my favorite weapon in 2016. After a couple of playthroughs and watching some of your videos, I started working on switching around to get around the cooldowns of each weapon. And not only was that more efficient, it was way more fun. I went back and played 2016 again after playing Eternal over and over so I could remember the differences. I pretty much only needed to use one or two guns to play the whole game. But then I went back to Eternal and eventually beat Ultra-nightmare. I haven't done the DLC ultra-nightmare runs yet but that's what's next. You and your videos showed me just how much fun this game can be if you try to learn how the game is meant to be played. Thank you for that!

But when I started watching Under the Mayo, I watched his mod videos and others explaining ways to expand your play style. Then I realized the hole I fell into, I started using more mods I overlooked like the Full-Auto for the Combat Shotgun and the Microwave Beam for the Plasma rifle. I even started using the ice bomb and unmayker for Cyberdemons, Barons, and possessed demons. id took a lot from bloodbonre (which makes sense as they are fans). i might eventually make a video on i but to be brief, Bloodborne has mechanics that you have to learn to have fun, parry and knockback. You can play without it but it makes the fights way easier and more fun. The weapons all have their own intricacies to them and rather than load the game up with 100 weapons you'll never use they give you a reduced weapon count but they all fit different playstyles and messing around with them and finding the weapon set that works your you right the sandbox is a big part of the fun. 51 hours later after getting the platinum i was still getting good with the max level hunter axe and using fire and lighting paper to do more damage. As i learned the games systems and took advantage of them, the game became more fun, and that's something Eternal does and its all the better for it.

I played WoW for years. When i played DMC for the first time, it wasn't a big philosophy to realise that chaining abilities is more optimal than relying on your favourite spell. First time i played Doom, i used the strongest weapon imo and swapped them when i was out of ammo, like i did in Q3A (didn't use the chainsaw, never ran out of all my ammo loool). The second time i played it, i played like DMC, weapons swapping combos and w/e. Now i weapon swap in MGS5, tranq gun/ tranq sniper/ non lethal granades, easy Foxhound badges on Extreme missions. And currently i am playing Eternal on Nightmare, not using the chainsaw (except once for the start of a slayer gate / empowered demons on), so i can spit on the grave of that retarded low ammo whining.

I'm a communication studies scholar with an emphasis on rhetoric and rhetorical theory (Ph.D) and your theory here is very similar to how communication studies theories work and how media communicates messages to the player. I've done rhetorical work in video games and how they use level design and game design to communicate to the player. I appreciated this, few videos provide good theories to a game, especially here.

My general feeling is that the fun zone (and its dark twin the unfun zone) has to do with the combat having a two-way snowball effect: when you're getting consistent quick kills on heavies and maintaining a good stack, every fight tends to be tilted in the player's favour and it's easy to stay in the zone and enjoy the feeling of control. On the other hand, small acts of clumsiness like a weapon mis-switch, or a movement error tend to result in several big hits and worse, loss of position which wipes out stacks and forces the player into desperation and resource hunting to grind their way back into the combat, which depending on the situation can either be exciting, or boring and annoying (just how far across the arena do you have to run before you can find a single weakling to chainsaw/gk?). Obviously all that is solved by gitting gud, but the problem for new players is that mastering quick kills and mod use cases for all the dangerous enemies can take longer than the campaign length (remember, you have the perspective of several hundred hours in game when talking about combat options), so they're getting repeatedly stuck in the mud. Also hurting new players and leading to a clunky feeling is that imo the default kb hotkey profile is extremely bad unless you have 10 extremely long fingers on your left hand, I had to rebind a lot of stuff and even use extra mouse buttons which I normally try to avoid, after which my weapon and equipment switching finally felt fast and consistent, but it took me almost 20 hours in game before I tweaked it enough to feel right. Many probably just left with the feeling that the mechanics and controls are overcomplicated and awkward to use, because the inputs required are so unintuitive to the hands.
@masterdeity34004 жыл бұрын
First of all, the fun zone and it’s dark twin, the un fun- zone 😂 you got a like just for that. Second, I get what you mean and I agree. Mastering the game can take longer than the actual length of the game, so I think a good way to fix this is updating the ripatorium to make it a better practice mode. The game should lead the player to it after the Super Gore Nest because at that point, you have all your weapons. This should be optional by having 2 waypoints, 1 that leads you to it and another that leads you the the next level. That way repeat play throughs aren’t as annoying. The game would give you a tutorial on weapon switching, enemy prioritisation and resource management. After completing it, the player can then customise it by choosing the arena and enemies they wish to practice. There should also be the option to endlessly fight, like a horde mode. This can also be accessed from the main menu. This introduces a lot of things people want and need from this game. An easy to follow tutorial on the core mechanics of the game for newcomers, and a horde mode that satisfies the players need to test themselves by practicing what they’ve learnt.
