I'd like to hear your thoughts on Hollow Knight. It's an action metroidvania, but with no character level grinding. All your powerups come from exploration. The only grinding you could do is for currency for merchants but you usually end up with plenty of that just by exploring.

@@theanimerapper6351 Valid point, but the video didn't seem to acknowledge that and ultimately seemed discontent blaming the grind as the main reason of not enjoying the game. The problem is with the Mirror more or less done so early into the game the only things incentivizing more runs are the visual novel elements on the story side, and the weapon aspects and upgrades on the gameplay side. At that point, the gameplay is so repetitive that doing a whole run just to get 1 part needed to upgrade your swords damage by 5% sounds fucking MISERABLE. I can not imagine that anyone would possibly keep playing this game after beating it once if the story element wasn’t there. It sucks, because all of the writing really is great, but playing through the same levels with the same weapons again and again and again and again holds it back so much.

I feel like Hades is not that grindy tho. You're right that farming Darkness (the resource for the mirror) and Titan blood (for weapon aspects, which you didn't really mention) does improve your performance in the game, but aside from a few improvements that are really broken or useful, they are just slight buffs to the experience. Idk, I didn't find most of that stuff to be actually needed in order to complete the game. You don't really have to actively grind for it, since you'll get those resources anyway and as with Spelunky, most matchups can be dealt with using your experience and strategy, specially bosses. Also, while you're right about the boons, since some combinations make some enemies trivial, what I like about them is that even if you have some overpowered combos, a lot of them are viable and collecting boons from the same god will always lead to a viable build. As an example, I always found Dyonisius to be one of the most "useless" ones, but when you go and pick a bunch of his boons, you're suddenly the god (pun intended) of poison-like DPS. Anyhow, loved your review. Since you criticized the exploration I'd recommend a personal favourite: Hollow Knight. Superb exploration (although it's easy to get lost), great combat (a bit on the slow paced side at the beginning), good lore, although no actual story, kinda like Dark Souls. Hope you like it if you ever play it

I still think Bastion, which is also by Supergiant, is a much more focused game for me with regards to the story/campaign. If you haven't tried Bastion I highly recommend that you do, it's similar to Hades in many ways; really good art style, great soundtrack, great combat (maybe not as refined as Hades) but with a more focused campaign which I greatly prefer.

I agree that it's a very grindy game. It took me 80-100 hours in to reach the true ending. And I'm only 10-15 Heat in ... on some weapons. And that is out of possible 64 heat. But I kind of do not agree that it's not a skill based game. Because one of the modifiers for the Heat is disabling your Mirror. So all that is left is the upgrades on your weapons, which is not all that much. So to me the difficulty curve is modified by: 1. Skill - All weapons have different strong sides and a rhythm to them. More skill = faster Damage Dealing and safer DD. 2. Accumulated knowledge of the game - The more you play, the more familiar with attack patterns and room configurations. Rooms are not randomly generated, they are pre-build, but they are randomly placed in your run. Also a big damage increase comes from the knowledge of how different boons work together and how to manipulate the game (picking certain boons or re-rolling to get what you need) to get what you want. This allows you to build awesome kits that feel powerful even in higher heat levels. But this point requires you to like the grind. For me it was the Story that kept me grinding, for Mayo that is usually not that story driven I understand how it may not be interesting to grind. 3. Grind for Titan blood to upgrade weapons, but that is bound to higher heat, so you become more powerful, but the runs become more difficult too. The game opens up when you beat Hades the first time. I was lucky that it took me only 10-15 runs to beat Hades for the first time. So that the story can open up, to add the aditional motivation to grind and for the Heat system to be there, so that the difficulty ramps up. I will never forget how happy I was with one Zag Bow run where the stupid Minotaur and his obnoxious buddy took all 3 of my Death Defiances and I still managed to kill Hades in that run (barely) and I was SO HAPPY, because it was very difficult to do at that time. To me it seems that Mayo was kind of bored with the game before getting to experience the higher heat runs. I'm glad Mayo tried this game. It's really fun one. I hope he continues to put more hours in to it, so he can see more of it's charm. Mayo, check Haelian stream or youtube, he does fun Speedrun attempts at high heats or just meme builds. It's really fund and impressive to watch.

Yo, I have beaten Hades in one of my very first runs. Ofc I played it over 200 runs before in a different save, but I can confirm you can beat the game on base difficulty(without difficulty mods) without any considerable power-ups. You require ok skills, decent luck and a lot of familiarity. Though you still need to clear the game a lot more times for the end game and stuff. Especially if you want to unlock everything, over 70+ runs is pretty much a minimum.

if you want a game a lot like hades, but with a linear, structured campaign, I would highly recommend Bastion, the studio's first game. 4:00 Well since you asked, these definitions are generally considered wrong. Not meaning to sound rude but the definition of a Roguelite is by the Berlin definition (yes, a committee in Berlin literally made a definition because they were annoyed that games not like Rogue were being called Roguelikes) a game like Rogue. They feature turn based tile movement, true permadeath and aren’t really made anymore. Stuff like NetHack and Angbata are Roguelikes. The Roguelite is spin off genre where most games made in the modern era fall. Roguelites are only defined to have the permadeath and randomly generated dungeons. Everything else is fair game. Hence, Spelunky is a Roguelite, and so is Hades, The Binding of Isaac, Nuclear Throne, Enter the Gungeon, etc.

What I like about the upgrade system is that it basically keeps you hooked and teaches you to learn the combat and the games systems, with spelunky 2 I know it’s a good game, but it can be frustrating and get a little boring for me, leading me to not want to keep playing if I keep dying, I can’t be bothered to get good as I feel like I’m not making progress. Hades on the other hand the upgrades motivate me to keep going and allow me to also learn the enemies move sets. The thing is if you simply just got more powerful and that negated skill it’d also suck, but as I learned with dead cells the first time you beat the game is basically the tutorial, a learning experience and by then, you should have most of the upgrdes unlocked with a plethora of knowledge to keep you motivated to play on higher difficulties, that’s the key, the game then becomes a battle of getting better and better to keep progressing the difficulty tiers, that’s what I like about it anyhow, if you’re skilled enough you can beat hades on the first few runs but most people won’t, I’ve seen a speed runner beat it on the first run but that’s a very rare type of person that’ll be able to do that. What also probably keeps me playing is the combat while spelunky 2 is a different game, but it was the same with dead cells, it just felt extremely good to play, like doom eternal, it’s hard to put down for me. I agree with the secret hunting, I found myself truing to explore certain areas to see if a secret was awaiting me, but to my dismay it was not 😩 Maybe there is some I just don’t know about, but I haven’t found any as of now. After watching this review I’d definitely like to see your take on dead cells, albeit initially it has the whole grind thing, but then turns into an extremely hard game which you pretty much need to learn every enemy attack and pray to the RNG gods.

Your point at 5:00 is so spot on, and one of the reasons I prefer rogue-likes to rogue-lites. Rogue-likes recognize that it's about the journey, not the destination. The player is able to achieve because of what THEY learned from their multitude of deaths. Because at the end of the day, failure is learning. Rogue-lites seem like participation trophies in comparison. There's no motivation to actually learn from your mistakes if the game's just going to eventually reward you for your time spent. Great stuff as always, Mayo. You really do have the makings of a great game combat designer.

If you're into this game but want something with less grindy roguelite elements, take a look at the first game by Supergiant: Bastion! It's got similar isometric action with unlockable modifiers and upgradeable weapons, but its less hectic and thus followable. It's got a similarly awesome art style and soundtrack, with an added feature of a handsomely voiced narrator dynamically describing the events as you progress through the linear levels. You can go back to grind for more xp/currency, but the game isn't designed such that you are expected to, and it's more an option for if you're really struggling for some reason even without any difficulty increasing modifiers or if you want to eventually max out everything. Highly recommend it as one of my all-time favs!

Their other games, Transistor and Pyre, are also great games, but I think they'd appeal to you less. You don really need to upgrade though, once you learn the mechanics you can beat it with no mirror upgrades at all. My only critique would be more variety in the encounters as every run starts to become the same.

If you liked the isometric perspective I'd recommend Hyper Light Drifter if you haven't played that. I also think you might like Furi, but know that the devs intend for your first run to be on normal to see everything and get used to the systems first and then play Furier (the bosses are different) if you really want to munch on the mechanics.

2:50 Complains about not being able to see while standing in a cloud of smoke, which is a trap in game literally meant to obscure your vision. While to some extent i agree with your point, this example you have shown is just really poor since that's more of you shooting yourself in the foot rather then it being the game's fault. A lot of the flashy attacks mostly depends on the type of god youre using though. Zeus is the worst offender of flashy attacks, whether by design or by negligence, since most of his attacks depends on these flashy lightning bolts that obscure a lot of the enemy's attacks. Most of my builds use Artemis a lot, which is a whole lot better since her effects arent as flashy as the others. Also another general tip is that each enemy has their own distinct sound, which helps to pin point which targets you want to go for first as well as when their attacking or not. There comes a point where your in game skill really alleviates these sorts of problems since youre going to be killing things quite fast that they dont have much time to become a problem. Also for the selectable difficulty, try using the Forced Overtime one. It speeds up enemy attack animations changes the game a whole lot. That and the Extreme Measures option, which adds a lot extra to the boss fights. Getting the true ending after 10 complete runs unlocks the option to change up the final boss too.

To add on to the whole "if you like to replay many runs unlock it all" is the story. Hades is one of the only games to properly integrate story into the repetiveness of roguelites. to get all unique dialoges and story events(many continue after true ending) would take more runs then fully upgrading stats, gear and hub. On paper the game boasts "over 300k words of text", these arent just "hey whats good", most are npc-npc interaction, greek myth reference/jokes, and deeper character development quests. favourites of mine are. - 2 romantic nights - threesome - friendzoned - pranked the musician saying you are the god of wine, and him then making a song about it("hymn to zagrues") to your embrassesment - getting "sleep incarnate" an autograph from "the god of war" etc. The reason "under the mayo" doesnt mention this and why i dont blame him for it, is because of how long you have be into the game to reach all these fun events, if you arent that grapped by the game, you wont have time to reach the best questlines, in which there is loads of once you get to it.. f.x some high-end events requires "ambrosia" which you only get from the 3rd boss on a difficulty modifier 1 above the last victory agaisnt that buff. that itself isnt bad in practice, but you only get 1 per run, and you need between 5-10 for each character(lots of deep events happen without these, but all characters have a bigger questline that only appears when these are given). the cons here are obvious, but the pros are great imagine each dead cells run having 5 minuttes worth of interesting story for 1000+ runs. like an additional reward for unlocking everything. again, totally okay to not be engaged in spite of this.

@@underthemayo Oh yeah, that defiently not much. not even the epilogue, but i guess enough for the "ending". Another factor that also opens with time is weapon variety through aspects, which leads to build variety. since upgrading makes aspects more viable, thus more freedom(favourites of mine being, chaos shield/chiron bow with poseidon/zeus duo boon + zeus legendary). theres also hidden aspects that only unlock after investing titan blood into weapons(around 5), that have a bigger change in moveset than regular aspects.

Original definition of Roguelike is a top-down turn-based RPG with randomly generated levels and opponents, as well as permadeath and lack of any kind of progression. ADoM, ToME, NetHack or from more recent ones - Stoneshard is a classic example of such a games. Then Binding of Isaac was released and called itself a Roguelike despite lacking most of the qualities, and everything with some degree of random and lack of save feature got called "roguelike". "Roguelite" is an attempt to split classic "Roguelikes" from more modern "Random and no save" games, though it just added more confusion into the mix, and by now nobody knows what anything means.

I tried it last night and the "grind until you're strong enough to win" aspect killed it for me. I don't see what's fun about that. And even if you can supposedly beat the game without any upgrades, if you take away that it seems like all you have left is just have a dull hack and slash. I got to stop buying these "overwhelmingly positive" reviewed games, because they seem to always end up being incredibly mediocre gameplay-wise.

I agree with you on pretty much every point, so I'm gonna recommend you another bullet hell roguelike/lite that I think is better than Hades: Enter the Gungeon. I got Hades, but I've since then stopped playing since I was turned off by the roguelite instead of roguelike gameplay just like you were, and I have to say, Enter the Gungeon is so much better. In EtG, you're always able to see where your character is, so there's never any unfair deaths, and while you can unlock new items, they don't make the game easier, just more varied, so you still feel like you're making progress when you die, making it much closer to a full-on roguelike than a rougelite (it's actually referred to as a roguelike-lite-like by the developers. The gunplay in EtG is pretty smooth and you're always able to dodge the projectiles of enemies. EtG does have a worse art style than Hades, as it has a pixel-art article, which I'm personally not a fan of as well as a worse soundtrack, and EtG doesn't really have much of a story at all, but it doesn't really need those things when the gameplay and combat loop is so good. I have nearly 330 hours on EtG, it's one of my favorite games ever, and I can not recommend it enough.

Would you like to try out Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice? It's a From Software's third person shinobi simulator that takes place in a magical world of feudal Japan with rhythmic melee combat and excellent portrayal of fencing. It's more story driven than most of From Soft's games with more intense and structured combat and brutal finishing moves. Tho you'll have to move the camera with a stick or use lock-on once again, so that's a bummer lol P.s. I'm not an English native, so sorry for weird wording in case I had some here

Since you asked: I feel like the progression based devision on what is roguelike and roguelite, which became prevalent because of the Game Maker's Toolkit video, is wrong. See none of these games have literally no meta progress that is saved between the runs, there are still achievement based progress, unlocks or, for example, shortcuts in Spelunky. And there is, to me, not that much difference between direct upgrades and other forms of progression in these games, because no matter what mechanic is used, the goal is still to give you the ability to change all of your future runs through your actions on the current one. So call me pedantic or old-fasioned but for me roguelike is still supposed to be a turn-based procedurally generated rpg on a grid.

This game is really fun But the grind really was starting to hurt toward the end. I love the characters, the voice acting, story and art but once you've gotten enough stuff so Zagreus is powerful heart rooms and gem rooms become useless when you could just have rooms for more Boons or Poms. Like most of the game had me immersed in it but at the very in I very much felt like I was pushing through just to see the first ending but overall still a great experience from a very small dev.

I can see where you're coming from with the rogue lite elements, but I definitely wouldn't say that the game requires grinding You can absolutely beat the game on a fresh save on the first escape attempt, there is nothing stopping you from doing so Some people will beat the game sooner than other people, depending on their skill and how many upgrades they need. But the upgrades aren't nearly as important as learning the mechanics of the enemies and discovering builds
