Two items we have and give as gifts we got off of Amazon. One is a bright orange, heavy duty, six foot telescoping, fiberglass bike flag, that many people attach to their bikes so they can be seen when on roadways. We keep them in our vehicles.because here in the Sierras with a bad snow storm that can bury a car, the bright orange shows up more than 6 feet above the roof of a vehicle so the CHP, emergency personnel, snowplows can see there is a buried vehicle or someone in need. Last December I gave family, friends a Plextone Road LED Lighting, Emergency Beacon Safety Lighting Flashing Warning Light for vehicles that have a magnetic base so they hold tight to a vehicle roof, car door etc. They also have a flashlight, with a hook so you can hook it to the open hood when checking the engine. The different flashing modes warn of danger. We were able to see a friend a mile away, who had one flashing on the roof of her truck.

I also knocked down the fridge and freezer temps so that everything would have a few more hours before it becomes a problem.

It was 3 degrees and-21 wind chill here but I'm prepped. I have a big stack of wood close by. It snowed about two and a half inches. I have a cord of dry pine. It doesn't get cold in here. I added two more fire bricks to my wood stove so it has four now. I added an inch of insulation on the South Wall, which is actually the end of another building that's uninsulated. It's much warmer. I've been making the required coffee on the wood stove. It's going to be 1 degree in the morning. I would rather listen to my wood stove than your furnace and generator. It's 80 degrees in here. I have a 20 gallon barrel that I can put gas in Monday, after all the snow melts. My five gallon can has four gallons left. The little Honda engine on my generator starts first time. Usually get the rope out about a foot before it starts. I ran it through a charge cycle on the battery bank, and it took six ounces of gas until the inverter charger kicked out of charge mode. I just have a few pine chunks in the stove. It's hot enough to make some coffee on. I'm trying to use up the last of a fifteen pound tank of propane and then I will get the gas and the propane too. It's hard to use up the propane with the wood stove going. So it has lasted 3 months. I guess I can afford that.

I prepared all summer for this. I've got hand sanitizer that I dumpster dough that I can set on fire . It does a wonderful job of heating I've already tested it all out I have some hand sanitizer that is suitable for indoors and others that are not the outdoor stuff I use it to boil water faster. So all my sanitizer is going to be used eventually. Why not it's free right? I bought three pair of insulated coveralls electric socks electric gloves then I also have just plain old thinsulate gloves. The hat scarves the wool socks. Now I'm probably going overboard with the way I prepare the house I always shut the water off whenever it gets below freezing here. Earlier this year I forgot to open a manifold and in the freeze cracked it that cost me about 15 bucks. But I got the replacement and now I have opened the valves on everything I drained every hose I could drain shut the water off from the source I've got enough water above ground to make it through. I've been saving these ice chest I got a source where I can get these ice chest out of a dumpster and they're big ice chests they're used to send stuff offshore. I've got enough ice just to make a huge wall. But what I did with him tonight was I positioned them all around my car I have a hybrid so your hybrid batteries they don't really like cold. So to help promote longevity I position these ice chests all around the underside of my car to where no air can get in and then I place tires inside of those ice chest and that way those ice chests aren't going anywhere the wind will not blow them away. Fingers crossed that this does the trick and helps keep a little better temperature on my car. We're not once it gets freezing here we're not supposed to see above freezing temperatures for almost 36 hours and that is very rare for my location. We can go years without a hard freeze. We had a decent little freeze this year but before that it was 5 years ago that we had anything that we considered dangerous. No I saw on the news those things going on in Wyoming Montana my prayers are for those poor people blizzard is no joke. And with the price of fuel these days there's a real chance that a lot of people can freeze to death. I've got the old fashioned go to a kettle and a hot water bottle if things get to worst. But as long as the grid is up I am enjoying my electric heating pad. I took a sheet and put it across the room and it helps segregate one air mass from the other in my small place thanks to that sheet I only need a 600 W heater to heat my room so far. I think I'm going to have to step it up as it gets colder and colder. No you're probably going to laugh right now it's 55° outside but the temperature is about to plummet like a Stone. As a former truck driver I thoroughly enjoy grid tied life. I have absolutely no desire to go back to caveman days. I lived enough hard times driving that truck freezing my butt off suffering from heat all that stuff eating whatever the heck I could end up fixing with the time that I had so I can tell you I wholeheartedly thoroughly enjoy my grid tied life. And I want to enjoy every minute of it I can until the day I go. In essence I'm not a happy camper. Give me my room and my TV and Air conditioning heating and all that good stuff with some internet and I'm satisfied.

We brought a cooler into the house that we can use if power is out as well. Drifting snow may make getting out difficult, so prepare to be indoors. We live in South Western Lower Michigan,(20 miles from Lake Michigan) and spent the day insulating the inside, west side of house by installing plastic on windows, rolled up old towels for bottom of doors , wrapped water pipes to outside faucets,etc. We have a 3000 watt sine wave inverter in case of rolling blackouts. Pantry full of food, water , essentials, what we call an emergency center of organized supplies , such as buddy heaters, solar lights, radio. Tomorrow is going to be a roller coaster with weather but we feel as prepared as we can be...Hey, we survived the blizzard of 1978! Happy Holidays to All..

Here I am at 46 years old and never having seen a kerosene pump at a fueling station. I googled this after seeing this and think we have a few places in Oregon you can pump kerosene but not many. Now I’ll be checking at gas stations 😂. You can buy it in jugs at like a Walmart I believe
@UndertheMedian Жыл бұрын
We have a couple of gas stations in our town with dedicated kerosene pumps.

Menards sells kerosene in the cans but it's SO expensive to buy that way. We're so glad to have a kerosene pump at our local Hucks Gas Station.

MERRY CHRISTMAS. I enjoy your videos. I'm listening to an old video with tips from viewers so here is mine: Lipstick tubes have at least a few months of lipstick left in the bottom of the tube where it won't spread easily. I just get a cheap lipstick brush and finish the tube this way. Hope this helps someone!

I see something you may want to do and that's gets an exhaust that goes at least higher than your roof so that if you get a snow drift that generator will put that air above the area of the drift. Then again it might just be easier just to put the generator up on a pedestal. That would mean you'd have to climb a ladder to refuel if you're using gasoline but if you're hooked up to natural gas it wouldn't be a problem.
@larryware1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that tip. We don't generally get that much snow here.

Getting the same storm in Massachusetts, but mostly rain 57 degrees and 60 mile an hour winds. Then a massive temp drop to 20-25 degrees. Roads will be very icy Saturday. Power lines run behind my house and the electric co was out there today checking the lines.

You're welcome, Judith. We actually are heating the house right now with two kerosene heaters. Our furnace went out last night - bad gas valve. We found someone to come and repair it today. So nice to be ready. The house is toasty warm. Get those provisions, you will never regret it.

The storm hit us before it went south. The usual things I do to keep the pipes from freezing worked until the night it hit -38 C (real feel -40 which is the same in F). I thought about filling up my 5 gal water jug, but didn't do it. Kicking myself now as my drinking water dwindles. Tomorrow it will warm up a bit and I'm hoping my water flows again. If not, I'll have to drive 35 minutes to the next town to buy water ... or melt snow. I hope you fare well with the cold. Merry Christmas. Jon in rural BC, Canada

May I ask more about this? How do they freeze? Is there insulation? We live din Northern BC and now Alberta but we've never had this problem. Now I'm wondering if we will?
@JonTanOsb Жыл бұрын
@@breezybre2670 My pipes are insulated, the cupboard open under the kitchen sink where it comes in and I have a lamp under there with a 60 W bulb to keep things warm. The bathroom tap, on the far side of my house was dripping, but it was just too cold. I had my outside pipes replaced from the water meter, in the summer, and should have put more soil down, put grass seeds down and insulated around the box where it comes into the house. Another thing for the warm day list. Just do everything you can, plus have flushing, drinking and cooking water on hand, just in case. Good luck. Jon in rural BC, Canada
@JonTanOsb Жыл бұрын
@@breezybre2670 I should add that my house is 66 years old and not built for that kind of cold. I'm in the mountain desert area of BC, so we're more used to getting +40 C and -20 is rare. So -38 and the wind chill making it -40 was just too much. But everything will thaw by Christmas, just hoping for no leaks.
@breezybre2670 Жыл бұрын
@@JonTanOsb ah yes....the very hot desert! Driving through Boston Bar and Cache Creek...dang is it hot!!!!! My house is from '79 here in Alberta. I 'like get my husband to check our well head to make sure things are good but so far so good and this is the 4rth round of -35. The basement is a bit cold and drafty. We are going to replace the 50 year old insulation with rock wool next week when it warms up.

I heard in texas that you should let water trickle in faucet so pipes don't freeze. Is that true by you? Also, most cell phones have a strong spot light that you can use temporarily. 😆 I like the raincoat for your generator.
@UndertheMedian Жыл бұрын
Let the water trickle is always a good idea, but ALSO open the cabinet doors under the sink so the room temperature air can get in there better. That helps more than anything else.

I'm in Houston, Tx and we were told if we live in the city not to let it run cause then the pressure may get too low and we will have a boil water incident. My faucet in my tub has a constant drip that hasn't been fixed so that may help right now. Lol

@larryware1 Жыл бұрын
The Kerosun Radiant 10 (shown in this video) uses a 504 wick that Amazon supplies for $18.59. I have 3 on hand for back up. They last about 5-8 years. They have to be brushed about every month to keep them clean and burning correctly. I have a wire brush for that purpose.

When Larry was diagnosed with end stage heart failure nearly five years ago and nearly died, he lost his hair. Cardiologists theorized that the heart condition was related to the hair loss. When his hair came back in, it was dark with very little gray. Every time I look at it, I'm grateful that I'm visiting with my husband in person and not at his graveside. Erin, asking questions is always super important to understanding.
