@@UniGya I don't think Otori would have been nearly as good if it wasn't such a juxtaposition of her character in Bake. Although she was always like this I guess, but you don't SEE it in Bake. I feel like her character had to play the simple damsel (which Oshino sees right through in the novels) in order for Otori to have as much impact as it did.

I'm sad everytime people dismiss Nadeko's character as simply villainous or callous of others. At the end of the day she's still very much just a kid, trying to find herself in the most extreme monogatari way possible.
@unknownceilings1
@unknownceilings1 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I could trust someone who dismissed Nadeko like that... Nadeko is clearly dissociating the entire time. Nadeko fairly explicitly experiences symptoms of psychosis. What version of Monogatari would someone who dismissed her as just being a villain even have watched? The version where they don't have any sympathy for mentally ill 14 year olds... Yikes

Unknown Ceilings Yeah, part of what I love so much about "Nadeko Medusa" is how well it nails that "I'm not here, this isn't happening" feeling of losing your grip on reality out of severe stress and self-loathing. It honestly reminds me of Guy de Maupassant's work, if a little less chilly.

Everyone hates her because of how she is. They hate her self-deceiving, they hate her passive attitude. Problem is, she also hates herself. The irony of knowing your weaknesses but being too weak to overcome them is what makes her such a relatable character. "Yes, i know I'm a coward. But I can't force myself to stop being a coward because i am too coward... to stop being a coward."
@loristnorton3723
@loristnorton3723 4 жыл бұрын
You can keep your weaknesses to your own if you want to stop trying to overcome it. Don't involve others otherwise you'd end up hurting them. This is probably the reason why people, dislike her character. She is inconviniencing a lot of people with her weaknesses while she's too paradoxical in dealing with it and the worst part is that she wants/expects the others to solve it for her.

@@loristnorton3723 You forgot the fact that the author used this characters to portray some value. She is being written that way and she had no control over whether she should change or not. The author used kuchinawa as a gate way for her to change. She does eventually open herself up but not all. Remember that she didn't open herself about that she could become a manga artist. For her dreaming to be a manga artist is the same thing as idolizing araragi. Something that you love but unattainable. She forgot that manga artist and araragi is two different thing. And thus kaiki enters the picture. He get to convince to nadeko to finally being true to herself completely by acknowledging that she could become manga artist and should not fear of any failure or rejection just like how she get to let her feelings known by araragi in nadeko medusa. So all in all her character is being written that way, you can't just say she expect everyone to solve her problem. Kuchinawa is the evidence that she want to be better. Each people have their ways to change but unfortunately, nadeko is one of the unfortunate fortunate people who live in nisio isin world of monogatari so everything get blown out of proportion.

It's not that other people that hate her. That's why she's able to slide using the same tactics over and over again. Because she's cute (appearance and behavior) and it's easy for her to act in a way that others dote on her. But she reasons that if she didn't happen to be cute (as Shinobu points out) then she eouohave the friends she has (Tsukihi) and she wouldn't be able to get away with the act that she puts on. It's almost a reverse narcissism where society treats her a certain way, and she gets us s to that and it's easier for her to fill that role without coming into her own.

I hated Nadeko as a character so much, but now that I've watched this video I think the reason of why I hated her was because of how much I relate to her.... to the way she sees her self. Of course I'm not talking about being a cute doll... but the way she hated herself to the point where she abandoned the only thing that was keeping her together... aka her creative outlet, I can relate to this so much it's actually painful. she's the worst tier waifu but also one of the most intriguing ones, especially because her forcing herself to be basic waifu thrash adds a nice contrast to the artisanal waifu lineup. because she's forcing herself to be ideal moe loli and doesnt end up likeable for it, its easier to see that monogatari likes to create appealing characters, and that they're appealing exactly because they're not -just- ideal moe. and then she gets an interesting story arc instead of being a moe waifu. i like her in this meta fashion, how immediately pale the clingy moe loli character trope suddenly seems

It's not shallowness... I don't see how forgetting about a character or even someone that actively doesn't wanna be noticed to be ''shallow''. Its actually brilliant fucking writing... It's really hard to explain but Hanekawa isn't the pet Nadeko is... Nadeko wants to be a child forever, that way she doesn't have to face anything, she can just be told what to do and never have to take responsibility for anything. There is something incredibly frustrating about someone who cannot pick themselves up and be an individual what so ever. Someone who's just a reflection of what others expect of them. Someone who's constantly frozen by life all by their own doing. Oh and not only frustrating... But dangerous. While Hanekawa has all sorts of problem, I don't believe she is a blank slate like Nadeko is, I don't believe she wants to be forgotten or to go unnoticed... She's still someone, she has some values and a sense of self... She hasn't completely given up on life is what im trying to say. Nadeko is a fantastic character in the fact she doesn't wanna be loved, she doesn't wanna be noticed and well... It's so well done that even readers fall for it. And its not because she isn't sexualized enough, she gets plenty of fan service. She's just truly unlikable by her own design... She's nothing, just an amalgamation of expectations that others have of her. And that can change at any moment, therefore she can too. How do you grow attached to someone who's basically a rubics cube?

Damn. This is why I love monogatari, why I have all the novels on my shelf. And this video eloquently transposes that. Nadeko was a character that took me a while to understand, which is funny because she is quite similar to me. I'm someone that wants to be a comic artist, I want to pursue that passion. Yet at my birthday party when my mother gifted me some manga drawing books I waited until we were in private to truly thank her, to thank her for paying attention to what I had been talking about. Because I didn't want my family knowing about it and having expectations of me, expectations I would be afraid of letting down. I find myself beating myself up if I don't work at my comic because I know it is what I am passionate about. I know that if I just say I'm gonna do something it is never going to happen, I have to actually put in that work and effort to see my dreams come to fruition, so I don't tell anyone except my closest friends about the things I work on. I think that being a creative is one of the hardest things because you have to acknowledge your shortcomings and actively work to better yourself, you can't just go through the motions. And sadly most of us creatives also have the curse of never being able to see the quality of our own work, no matter how good you get it is never good enough, and even someone that can't draw etc complimenting it doesn't help. Creating things is truly a cursed endeavor in which you lay your soul bare for the world to see, and sadly that is what makes it so beautiful. You put a portion of yourself in everything you make.

Nadeko is by far my favorite character in the whole series and overall I think is along Kaiki and Shinobu one of the best written characters in the series, no, she BECAME one of the most well written characters in the series. Idk at which stance did Nisio plan to explore even more Nadeko as a character but he managed to make a continuity of how much the story reveals the deepness of her character. From just a little tease of oddness in Nadeko Snake, a weird interaction in Tsubasa Cat, Nadeko "out of character" in Nisemonogatari, her entire character being expanded and antagonized in Nadeko Medusa, an unexpected exploration of her past and true feelings in Hitagi End and finally a welcomed redemption in Nadeko Draw. I really hope they adapt the off season volumes soon (I really hope we get the official translation of Nademonogatari even sooner, they already translated Zoku Owarimonogatari)

Great video about one of the more tragic heroines of the show. The self-deceptive front and rottenness of Nadeko's personality really made her stand out from the other girls in the franchise. (Even though every character are really great on their own too!) Nadeko just seems to get the most flack just for being an "antagonist" and it's really nice to see this kind of a deep-dive to her character and giving her recognition. Hoping to see more character analyses in the future! BIG PROPS to MrNiesGuy for the monogatari-style word frames in the video. Really tickled my Shaft/Shinbou bone.

I don't really get why she is hated by being an "Antagonist" Since she isn't the first, nor the only one that tried/did kill someone or destroy something. Shinobu in some other timeline pretty much destroyed the world and even has her antagonist arc... Yet for some reason she has a lot of fans. Same for Hanekawa, Black Hanekawa tried to kill Araragi, but everyone forgets that too... And don't even remember Kanbaru at all that tried it two times. Nadeko just gets hated just because

This is the more in-depth analysis I've seen on Nadeko, and honestly, it blows me away just how much of this I both already knew, and how much I didn't. I think that's part of why it takes Kaiki to actually change her perspective. Koyomi seems to think at first that the image of her, the doll-type persona she had. Koyomi wanted to return her to that state, and to that goal he kept letting himself get hurt. It was almost as though he wanted her to hurt him so she didn't hurt herself like this. HE almost was willfully ignoring who she was, because that wasn't as important as who she wanted to be. Or at least, he wasn't able to see it since he had seen that persona more than anything else. It's part of why I just, adore how Otorimonogatari made use of all the characters I wanted to see. The moment I realized what was going on I knew Hanekawa would have a great perspective on it. Oogi's words to her fit so well knowing who she really is. And atop that, Kaiki... oh my lord the ending of Otorimonogatari with him is probably my favorite to any anime arc, ever? Thank you so much for this analysis, I've made sure to bookmark your other videos!

Thanks for making this video, to be honest Nadeko is probably the character i despise the most in Bakemonogatari, i guess that because her character hits too close to home. Which for me after witnessing all her arcs becomes really relatable. The thing i can relate the most with her is how she perceives her own image, and invisible "impression" of who she is, how others see her that she has internalized on her own. That by her circumstances she felt that she could not properly express who she is. I'm on my own has faked my own self since my adolescence, probably after seeing that others might not accept me for being who i really am. I learnt that being different is not so desirable. That there is always someone opposed to me being the way i truly am, of course at that time i was so self conscious i couldn't see it from any other way. To keep the status quo in order to not be opposed, to avoid conflict, so that i won't be left alone. Not that it changed anything, infact i was quite a loner in my younger years. So i kept that facade, being oblivious to the world, to the point i enter my adulthood. As an adult i was surprised by the change, that nobody really gives a shit for my behavior, that as long i did not hurt anybody i was fine. Still for me it took some years to finally came out of my shell like Nadeko, it took me my own breakdown having to come in terms with myself, to be vocal to what i really feel, to finally act on what i really want without trying to keep my "image" and my own expectancy either for myself or others. Now that it is over, i felt much better that i learn to value my own judgement and views on what really brings me a fulfillment. If anthing i regret is that i don't know any better, that i wasted my adolescence, confining myself to the image i was imposed not because people force me to but because i was afraid to show what i really am, afraid of change, and doing what i really wanted. The conclusion is that don't be afraid to express yourself, remember that not everyone matures at the same time and excuse them if they resent you because you're being truthful to yourself but don't let them sway you. In time people will realize that it is up to them and their own self to be happy, like Oshino said that only can save yourself and if you can help it, try to be someone that can bring others their best and to make them realize what is their power and to focus on that is what makes them well... them. To be honest, we may not be the main character, but we have our own stories in this world, it is up to us to write our stories or have it written by others beside us. Have the confident to act, of course people will come and go in our lives and they would inevitably influence us, but that doesn't mean they're the only ones that form us to be what we are today. Remember we have to take control own wheel or else others would control our wheel away from us. Sorry for rambling, i just wanted to share my thoughts and to see if there is someone else that felt this way. I know there are people that can say this better than me, but i just want to encourage those that are struggling with this too. For those that happens to be facing this, i just want to say i'm your friend, and that trust me you're going to be okay. For others that managed to read this far even though you did not experience this, either way, thankyou for listening, God bless you.

Thank you for everything you have said. I personally can relate to almost all of what you wrote and reading about it gives me hope about what my future holds for me. During the last year I had the courage to face the fact that all of what I have done since then was all about a person I pretended to be just to be accepted by others. It was hard, I had to leave university and come to acceptance that what I always thought I wantend was just an illusion. The only problem is that I was so into my false persona that I actually never even really question myself, what I like to do and what I want to do. I was finally the real me but to me I almost felt like a stranger, I didn't even know where to begin to get to know myself. I'm still struggling to find what I want to do with my life and the passing of time just gives me fear about my future, but I'm relived to know that there is an end of this tunnel. PS: Sorry for all the grammar errors, I'm not used to write in english.

@@lucasammartino3974 It's okay, i'm also not a native speaker of English too. Well speaking of a new beginning all of us has to go through it, personally i was just starting to get my grip in life like 2-3 years ago when people already started way earlier. I know I felt i was left behind BUT it doesn't matter right now because i know what really matters to me, so i simply choose to left that weight behind and pursue my happiness. I got to met people with similar interest and genuinely support me so i'm content with it. Ofcourse there is going to be some people who will not agree but again, i know what i really want to persue. A lot of people aren't accepted until they get successful then suddenly people stop complaining, that is what human does so don't let it get your nerves. I support your decision if it is for the betterment of yourself. So buddy seek that dream, make it a reality. Use it to be an inspiration to empower others and be happy, cheers

I relate to this story alot my experiences are mostly lies ive been told or i have told and i have tried so hard to hide my self and escape from reality that i succeeded and forgot everything and barely remembered anything and the reason why i always wear the clothes that hide my body the most like hoodies and jogging pants is because i use them to hide myself i even like growing my hair long i never really thought about it before but it feels like its also to hide myself behind. I have always been picked on for my looks and my overly underweight body i was always called a skeleton with skin on top and i always had a tendency to have a world of my own its almost like a split personality when i snap people that picked on my flee as they frantically try to escape and hide from me a monster made out of rage and frustration, i was always a pacifist back then and still am now and I've gotten better at controlling my self and holding back on hurting others as this is my second chance so i hide behind a mask and act like im pure and fully selfless. I have never really looked at my self as a hero even before i loathed my self i just saw myself as a below average person trying to pass by and help others but being so nice made me a target of everyone bully me until they need something i even almost lost everything i loved and knew just because i felt bad for this manipulative bad person for guilting me to giving him what i had and me being hungry for months in school. We got in a fight i snapped and i beat him in the end i had no scratch on me i threw tables and kicked things over ruined the class room broke his backpack and helped him get home as a sorry i got lost and almost lost everything i loved and knew but i got home eventually i never talked to him again he had a smirk on his face i honestly thought about killing him but i did the right thing im not a murderer, That was also the year my self loathing started he was the one to set everything off. I used to draw alot when i was younger i used to talk alot while i was younger more polite and happy and helped anyone in anyway i could, until i grew up and started to loathe my self and with doing so i have noticed while backtracking that i have done everything i used to less and less i talked to everyone less and less overtime and became reserved and quiet, i drew less and less but most importantly i became less happy and more depressed and disappointed. And growing up i grew cold unforgiving almost emotionless and cared less about others to the point where i am debating if i am a sociopath, its the opposite of what i used to be i was kind forgiving and selfless and was full of emotions mostly good ones but for some reason i was always picked at and maybe thats one of the reasons that caused me to self loathe and become the polar opposite of what i used to be. I dont know anymore i dont even know why i started drawing or why i continue and now that i think about it i started to draw less and less when i started to hate myself even showed less and less drawings to people to the point where i showed none. I have even stopped posting art on the internet i am no longer pure and had a heart of gold as i grew up i have hated who i have become to the point of reverting to my past self a childish clumsy and happy kid, I've always had a mask on for a long time but i stopped using it and what was behind wasn't very flattering. I have always said sorry but i avoided conflict alot i avoided interaction to the point that i want interaction and most of my life has been a lie the friends i thought i had, myself, my families lives ive been told about. I have told many lies myself so much so that i became good at it even manipulative but maybe i learnt that from the past and i even befriended two good manipulators one partly sociopathic and the other a liar. I have no idea about anything anymore not even what i want to be, im always told what to be what everyone else wants to be and i went with it not even thinking i used dream about being a soldier and or scientist but no and now one of my family members wants me to be a lawyer trying to force me to become one but shes already a few years too late as ive made up my mind to slowly but surely decide what i want to do as my job in the future. I have alot of guilt, remorse, sadness, anger, frustration, hatred, and disappointment i dont want to lose what emotions i have left what memories i have left no matter how bad, i have always had bad memory but it got worse once i started hating everything about myself i can only remember select few memories and thats one of the reasons why im not a very reliable person. I realized i grew up to fast so i slowed down dramatically to the point where I wasn't growing up at all and my actions and words became immature, i became rude unforgiving and worried less about others. Lately ive been backtracking to the past and thinking what the difference was with present me and past me and trying to improve on that and its been getting better, i have gotten a little more self respect and pride i started drawing again although alittle inactive, ive been talking to friends i still have everynow and then checking up on them and going out side every once in a while. I have also been feeding the pets we have at hope and interacting with them now they seem a little bit more happy now but my bird still hates me but i can understand where he comes from i take care of part of taking care of the house as its the least i could do and its my responsibilities, i am lucky to live here i just couldn't appreciate it until now and thats okay as long as i can improve in the end its okay. I met this little kid that reminded me so much of myself when i was his age 8 years old and I've been enjoying his company i dont really need a mask when im around him cause i nice real me leaks through and I'd like it if the nice real me wasn't behind a mask and a negative version of it, I've been going out again all be it rarely i have had kinda let go of the bad past but keeping the good memories, i talk alot more now too even to my family as i barely spoke to them in the past i also started praying again even if its not very often i do so. This isnt the happy ending yet i still have a life to live and many things to do and fix up anyways thank you for reading this rather long comment if you made it this far sincerely. - Jared/the has barely any real secrets person that also likes to draw. Written in 11/6/2019 or june (writers note: sorry if this was confusing the original comment got a portion deleted so i had to write what i can remember)

Finally someone made a video about these two fantastic Monogatari arcs. Despite being called "trash" in the fandom, I've always loved Nadeko character and I relate to her a lot. I've been isolating myself from others and I still have problems communicating my own feelings, my family didn't help because I was their "revenge" to people who thought I was going to be a problematic child anyway in the future. In my middle school days I endured, in the highschool I snapped and at the same time lost my dream. At the time I first watched the Otori/Koi arcs I didn't understand in dept the real issue but I felt it so close in some way that it helped to cope with mine. Now it's not solved enough, but at least I'm trying to get better and kill that "pure image" I've been creating in my past. You analized her character perfectly and it would be interesting if you'd like to make more of these analysis of Monogatari characters. Thanks a lot for the vid, subs

Great analysis video, really helped me understand what was going on in the show. Far too often I got caught up in the flashy visuals, off-color fanservice, whack circular dialogue, and Quentin Tarantino-style out-of-order arcs to focus on what the story was actually trying to convey. It's funny that Kaiki is the hero just by being the adult in the room. That being said, I understand he was his blind spots as well; dude made some armature mistakes with Nadeko and etc. Great catch with the Hanekawa stuff. Kinda like how Kanbaru was the perfect choice to help Shinobu find the courage to face her First Kin.

A good, easy to understand recap/analysis. Hopefully will finally help some blind haters to understand that Nadeko is not an evil or bad person, she's just a human with her own weaknesses and problems. I think this video lacking a novel's touch, I think there's much more to say with book's information. Personally Nadeko is my favorite character. Undeniably well written, as well as likable, sympathetic and so much relatable for me. Under that self doubt, doll-like passive lifestyle hides a beautiful, kindhearted person that we will see in Nademonogatari. Thats where she started to bloom, following her dream, finally facing and dealing with her own problems, learning from her mistakes and not being afraid to be herself. She finally started to live her own life of a beautiful person she always was, but this time without hiding. Unfortunately, it will take years until Nademonogatari gets adaptation. Until then there will be some people spewing nonsense about Nadeko, I doubt they would read a book.

Even in Bakemonogatari, Nadeko was one of my favorite characters, but I never understood why until I finished Koimonogatari. Because out of all the characters in Monogatari, I relate to her the most. Hiding my true self from most people, never acknowledging my true goals and feelings except when around my closest friends. I think a part of me perceived that there was more to her in Bake because I could recognize a lot of how she acted in myself. Her arc really didn't end how I thought it would. I thought for sure she would remain as a god and be the 'final boss' of the Monogatari series, like she thought she wanted to be. From a plot-driven perspective, that would be the case. But Monogatari is not a plot-driven series. It's all about characters. And her story would not have been as impactful as it was if they had done it that way. And this is why I love the Monogatari series. Why it's quickly becoming my second favorite anime, second only to Anohana. (It would be first if Anohana hadn't had such a life-changing impact on me.) Sorry for the rant. I actually just finished Koimonogatari a minute ago and came in to watch this video, so I had a lot on my mind.

Well, aside from what has been already animated about her (nadeko snake, nadeko medusa, her scenes in nisemonogatari, koimonogatari, owarimonogatari and zuko owarimonogatari) there is also another whole volume about her that tells us what happened to her and what she is doing now (nademonogatari/Nadeko draw). It's a good story that completely finish Nadeko's character developement and completes her as a character (we already knew her fake self, her broken self, and now you can finally see her real self). It hasn't been officially translated yet, but there is a (really good) fan translation out there. I dont know where did I find it, but its in a reddit post that recollect all currently available fan translations of all the parts that dont have an anime adaption. If you really liked Nadeko you should check nademonogatari/nadeko draw, you will love her even more (in case you despise her, at least you will finally see where her character developement is aiming at)

One of my favorite characters of the show. People hating her really miss the point.
