The best DJ the world ever had. He was so influential on the whole music scene and especially on everything alternative between the 70s and the 90s. He was a protege to many bands and the first to constantly play them on his show. Teenage kicks was played on his funeral. My youth wouldn't have been what it was without numerous vinyls of his famous Peel Sessions.

Some background for you. They were an Irish band formed at the height of the violent troubles in Northern Ireland. They made a conscious decision not to mention The Troubles and wrote songs about teenage life (their second album was called More Songs About Chocolate And Girls). They had a string of hit singles and albums in the late seventies. Singer Fergal Sharkey, an ex choir boy, went on to have solo hits after the band split, including a number one. Teenage Kicks was originally entitled Teenage Sex.

Such an epic punk classic. Punk was really a throwback to the simpler pop of the sixties. Just played faster, harder and with more raw lyrics in general.

A classic of the genre. Looking back to early rock-'n'-roll was very much part of the back-to-basics ethos of punk: you get your guitars and your 3 chords (or 4 in this case) say what you want to say and say it quickly. The raw energy of this song still shines through today.

Hi JP. DP from UK. Songs like these are All I Need. One of the best punk/new wave hit singles: good catchy song, great singer (unusually for punk!). Feargel Sharkey went solo and had a UK number 1 with A Good Heart. He's now an environmentalist, campaigning against pollution in Britain's rivers, especially our pure chalk streams in Wiltshire and Hampshire (the water rises in the chalkhills - remember the XTC song). P.S. my song ref All I Need is by Jacob Collier.

I really liked The Undertones around '79-'81, 'Teenage Kicks' is one of my all timers it's a little reminiscent of tracks like Eddie Cochran's 'Summertime Blues', together with tracks like 'Girls Don't Like It', 'Jimmy Jimmy', 'My Perfect Cousin', 'Here Comes Summer', 'When Saturday Comes', 'You've Got My Number' & 'Get Over You' all are slices of punk pop/new wave perfection... A nice choice... Feargal has some decent solo stuff, I love his voice, the man could sing and you always knew who was singing... Oh! it's pronounced Fer-gal...

This was on the 'Good Vibrations' label which is from the Belfast record shop of Terri Hooley. This store opened during the troubles in Northern Island and Terri bravely championed the local music scene in difficult circumstances, a very good film called 'Good Vibrations' was made about this in 2013 and is highly recommended. Feargal (pronounced Fergal) Sharkey was on BBC tv this morning speaking on enviromental issues (water and rivers).

John Peel was a legend. His favourite single is widely known to have been "Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones; in an interview in 2001, he stated "There's nothing you could add to it or subtract from it that would improve it."[42] In the same 2001 interview, he also listed "No More Ghettos in America" by Stanley Winston, "There Must Be Thousands" by The Quads and "Lonely Saturday Night" by Don French as being among his all-time favourites. He also described Lianne Hall as one of the great English voices. In 1997 The Guardian asked Peel to list his top 20 albums. He listed Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica as his number 1, having previously described it as "a work of art". The top 20 also included LPs by The Velvet Underground, The Ramones, Pulp, Misty in Roots, Nirvana, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, The Four Brothers, Dave Clarke, Richard and Linda Thompson and The Rolling Stones.[52] A longer list of his favourite singles was revealed in 2005 when the contents of a wooden box in which he stored the records that meant the most to him were made public.[53] The box was the subject of a television documentary, John Peel's Record Box. Out of 130 vinyl singles in the box, 11 of them were by The White Stripes, more than any other band in the box.[54] In 1999 Peel presented a nightly segment on his programme titled the Peelennium, in which he played four recordings from each year of the 20th century. Seán Feargal Sharkey OBE (born 13 August 1958) is a singer from Northern Ireland most widely known as the lead vocalist of punk band The Undertones in the 1970s and 1980s, and for solo works in the 1980s and 1990s. His 1985 solo single "A Good Heart" was an international success. After becoming less musically active in the early 1990s, he has performed various roles supporting the UK's commercial music industry, winning several awards and honours for his work in that area. Hardcore punk is raw, in your face, and tends to make a political/social statement. For specific songs try "In My Eye" and "Minor Threat" by Minor Threat, "Rise Above" and "Damaged" by Black Flag featuring front man Henry Rollins, and "California Ubet Alles", "Kill The Poor" by Dead Kennedys (Holiday In Cambodia was already done). Some more notable bands: MDC (Born To Die), Crass (Do They Owe Us A Living?), Suicidal Tendencies (Institutionalized).

@@kevinhodgson2990 Much of Crass is borderline unlistenable. I'd suggest picking something off the album _Penis Envy_ because the lyrics are great and Eve Libertine's delivery is fantastic. @@jackal59 I don't think any of my friends had any issues with Steves vocals or delivery back in the day but our tastes may be very different from your. Stations of the Crass and Penis Envy were often played in my circle of punk musicians. Hi Justin, thanks for your comments, where you spot the connection to earlier pop sounds. And yes, this was John Peel's favourite song. Which is significant because John Peel was significant in the development of British popular music for decades. There are various releases by various bands of "Peel Sessions", where they would go to the studio and play live, without an audience, for his show. Anyhow, like you, I enjoyed the Undertones, and the rough and ready catchy tunes and fun lyrics of their first album. And was also really taken by how they developed, still with a fondness for the more wide-ranging styles of pop on their third album, Positive Touch. Keep in mind that these guys came from Northern Ireland, so a somewhat different social background from other British bands at the time. (Similarly, for example the Buzzcocks hailed from Manchester rather than London, so a different regional sense informing them from those developing in the capital of the UK, like Sex Pistols, the Clash, etc.)

It's always difficult to write something about a track that has, like in this case, become a bit of a mythically legendary thing amongst the listeners of a certain era, demographic, region, or whatever grouping is appropriate. If you attempt to write something and it's in favour of the piece, praising it, you could easily be accused of simply jumping on the hype-wagon (either of the time or of the legendary status it later acquires). If it's negative, however, it could come across as some kind of reactionary "Oh, ***I*** never thought it was all that good, actually" piece of nose-in-the-air snobbery in an attempt to come off all hipster and musically aloof, floating above the hoi-polloi. So I won't bother writing anything and just enjoy these few minutes of simple but catchy pop.

The Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers (SLF) were pretty much the two biggest punk band in Northern Ireland in the late 1970’s a time when the Troubles were going full bore. Bombs going off, paramilitary gangs, barbed wire everywhere, sectarian hatred and the British Army all over the place. SLF were a mixed band of both Protestant and Catholics and at least to start out with were very political and the all Catholic Undertones were pointedly not. I get both sides of that.

That was the basic concept that Macolm McLaren put forth as his rationale for the Sex Pistols, especially on the track "The Geatest Rock N Roll Swindle" - punk was basically just old time rock and roll, faster, more intense, with attitude. Any non-original songs on the Pistols' albums were just that, remakes of 50s and 60s rock and roll hits. I don't agree with him, but he seemed to feel he was pulling a fast one on the gullible youth - at least this was his stated opinion by some accounts.

Great song. Though I feel weird whenever I sing along to it in my car now that I'm in my late 40s.

I got from it a slightly punk feel, not much. Yes, very sock hop. Come on let’s Stroll. Vocals, if Geddy and Perry had a singing baby. Thought it a decent rock pop song, hadn’t heard it. Pretty good.

It’s so basic and brilliant - typical of teens all over who realised anyone could form a band - this is a classic.

They were rather unknown in Germany when they appeared in the 9th Rocknacht opening for the night. I think they were just ok and for opening the show their music was appropriate. But they paled so much compared to the bands that followed. Mink de Ville was also rather unknown but their performance was unbelievable, followed by Black Uhuru with great Reggae sounds and at last Roger Chapman, "The King of The Shouters". It may not be fair to compare The Undertones to the other three bands because they were on a complately different level. But the first impression is just the first impression and so I still think they were a good band I would not turn the radio off but also far away from special.

This is my 1st time hearing them, it was okay, kind of repetitive. The only punk band I like is The Ramones. I do like a lot of post-punk bands that made the transition to new wave. There are loads of great '80s bands. I don't see any reaction to The Ramones on your channel. Grab "Ramones Mania" which compiles 30 of their best tracks, 3 chord wonders mostly without guitar solos. They had a sense of humor, loads of songs about lobotomy, sedation, shock treatment and psycho therapy. My favorite? 'The KKK Took My Baby Away'

I think you're right about the Ramones: I don't recall them being reviewed on the channel. Very influential on the formation of punk and definitely need to be checked out.

Dave Grohl has (inadvertently) ruined this song for me. Anyone else see his chat with Pharell Williams in "From Cradle to Stage" where he explains how basic a drummer he is? Listen @1:39 and compare to the disco beats that were around at the same time.

First album was very promising but they kind of lost direction a bit, Wednesday Week was really a pop single and badly damaged their credibility with their punk/new wave fans.

Another tune called 'punk' simply cos is came out at the end of the 70's. Punk, my bottom. A bog standard pop tune that included some slightly fuzzy guitar. Also, it's simple as fud, repetitive, and with a solo a beginner could play. It somehow seems to have achieved almost mythic status (in the UK anyway) just cos J. Peel said it was his fave. It's ok, but far from anything special. * Now re real punk, we need more CRASS. Where's Bloody Revolutions, Banned From The Roxy, or You've Got Big Hands...

@@pentagrammaton6793 I admit, there are similar kinds of songs that I like as well. I’m sure it has to do with upbringing and exposure. I live in the states so The Undertones weren’t on my radar. This is a first listen for me! 😁

Hmm ... I think I'd still prefer *The Finest Joke is Upon Us* for the day's rock ration (we swill down bucketfuls of rocks on this planet). kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqbEkp54g8iDmM0 (By *GBV* ) It goes nice and wonky in the middle. Slides off the edge of itself. (Don't parse it. Just a bit of gobbledegook. They're partial to gobbledegook on this planet, too.)

For something rockier, try *Stone - by Alice in Chains* . Not bucketfuls of rocks on that planet, but a nice big one, suitable for Sisyphus. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3zQinmPatSCrK8 If you've somehow managed to be into metal, and yet miss out on AIC, you'll be a happy fellow when you get round to fixing that.
