I can relate. We were digging with dredging equipment to find a 10" natural gas pipeline that parted after a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. I went down to see if I could try to locate it while they pressured up the pipeline. When the gas started to vent from the pipeline, all the loose mud started to shake violently. We had dredged down to 20' below natural bottom and there was at least 5' of loose mud in the hole. Lets just say I had the same reaction, GTFO.

Scariest moment of my life was when I was spear fishing off the coast of Maui and thanks to my curiosity I came face to face with a group of huge red and white striped Eels that were under some big rocks, there were about 5 of them and they had razor sharp teeth about 2 feet away from my face...

Reminds me onetime when I was out hunting in the middle of nowhere during an earthquake. It started as a low audible rumble but also an inaudible vibration in my chest and all around me. The trees made a strange noise as they shook their leaves and branches. Definitely different than just the wind ... ill never forget it. It really was like a giant just pivoted and groaned...

I've experienced it. Pretty weird and cool experience. First was more than 4yrs ago. We had a 5.7 magnitude earthquake 2 days before the dive so we had aftershocks. It was like being inside a washing machine due to the sound. Saw all the other divers panicking and swam fast back to their boat. Last week was the latest one. Had a small earthquake in the morning, then during the dive, heard a quick one. It was just like being under the water while a big cruise ship starts their engine. (We were in the shallow and no big ships around)

Im surprised the shockwave doesn't do more damage. I know that hand grenades in water can really mess a person up since water carries force better than air does. I'd assume the literal ground suddenly shifting would deliver a lot of force to the water.

The only real danger if it's a massive one that causes the ground to split, in which case I would be trapped in the vacuum and be on my way to hell. However, that would never happen in my life time cause there's not enough stress in those plates.

Man, when they where a series of severe earthquakes here in Oaxaca (coast region) we heard very similar sounds when we slept, at the time we slept outside in tents, so we had our ears on the ground, an when an earthquake happened, we would hear a sound like this one and some kind of liquid-ish sound too

This is an aftershock from the 6.9 Chiapas earthquake 2 days earlier. What will really freak you is this was over 400 miles away and by the time you heard it, already happened near 4 minutes earlier (assuming it happened near point at Chiapas tectonic plate).

Not kidding you, but spearing in Philippines and Indonesia, three times I have felt the shock waves of dynamite fishing blasts. It's intensely unnerving and an eartquake would really freak me out as I'd think about whether a tsunami would be incoming before I could make it to shore and up a hill.

I've seen a video where there are several divers in the water and when the earthquake hits, the current changes and the divers are struggling to stay in place, rocks start falling and the sand/silt is SUPER disturbed, created an underwater cloud. In the video above.....considering there was no disturbance of the rocks, the silt, the land above the water and no change in the current / waves.....I think that was something else. Not an earthquake.
