A diver is trying to clean the glass at an aquarium where a cuddly zebra shark just won't let this diver work.
The diver takes a break from working to snuggle the zebra shark and give him some rubs.
A great example of how our Awesome Ocean is full of amazing life! Learn more at AwesomeOcean.com

No normal shark would behave this way. All the fish in there are lethargic, this aquarium is a nightmare for an animal that is made for having hundreds of squarekilometres for it to move in. Everyone thinks this is ok, because they are fish, but none of the people here would find it ok to hold a dog in a windowless, tiny room for the entirety of it's life

Just in case anyone has weird anxiety about the shark suffocating because it isn’t moving, don’t worry! Zebra sharks don’t need ram ventilation like some other sharks do. In fact, they often lay down on reefs and stuff like that, using their strong throat muscles to keep breathing. IDK about anyone else, but it bothered me so much I had to google it

Yep, I was thinking, this shark is not looking for affection, it was simply curious about the diver who then proceeded to embrace the shark. Great Whites become incapacitated when upside down and I am still convinced this shark is in a state of incapacitation until the diver lets go. I mean, “Sure, hahaha, the shark wants to cuddle.” 😕
@vanitas7441
@vanitas7441 2 жыл бұрын
@@melindaatkinson3585 you may be right. What you’re talking about is called tonic immobility. While the reason for this response is not very well known, it is believed to be related to things such as mating and defense. Though it’s observed in many shark species, including the zebra shark, not all are capable of it. It is a common method researchers use to collect data on sharks while minimizing injury to both the shark and the researcher. It doesn’t hurt the shark in any way as long as it is only held in the position for less than approximately 15 minutes. It just puts the shark in a state of disorientation for a short period of time, and it will soon return to a normal state once righted. So even then, no cause for concern. :)

@@mook_butt8037 The way it is framed in the movie and book is from the mind of a person who lived in a world where they literally knew nothing about actual sharks, and thus he thought that the animal that kills barely five people a year (which is less than coconuts, car crashes, or basically anything else that actually kills us really.) And most of those deaths result from panicking and thus activating their hunting response, or from the fact that surfboards look a lot like seals from below. The shark is shark in appearance, but compared to almost any real shark he is way worse, though justified. I say almost because every species has some extra mean members, but those are the exception in most cases, not the rule. Pet a shark on its belly or snout when it's eyes are normal and they are almost like a house pet. And also, Manta Rays are sharks too, and are notorious for being kind. Sting rays have the same capacity for love, but are inherently more lethal if you mess up.
@seasalt1498

Great white sharks actually get eaten by orcas pretty regularly. The orcas gang up on a shark and perform a manoeuvre that pushes its liver out of a bite wound. Considering they're also known to play with their food, I'd say they're a fair bit more monstrous than sharks. Still nothing on humans, though.

@@niftymillerdj yeah, you’ve got it right. Something else to note is that people also seem to exaggerate the danger of shark skin: people talk like just brushing against it will cut you, but if you’re being gentle when handling the animal, your probably fine in terms of sharkskin related injury. Hell, I once held a bull shark who was thrashing in my arms, and the worst I got was something akin to rope burn. Edit: shark was fine by the way.

PitLord777 if you feed sharks a good amount routinely they don't eat the fish because they don't have a reason to. I work at the Georgia Aquarium and occasionally I get to feed the sharks and it's really cool to see.
