Both the Underwood and Buffalo bore are in a class of their own. When it comes down to wood protection, you're covered. I have a .40 cal S&W and a 9mm H&K I take with me to the outdoors of Colorado loaded with Underwood. I plan on getting some Buffalo Bore so I can have my spare magazines loaded with both. Nice video. I thought the 147 gr was going to underperform velocity wise, but I was pleasantly surprised. Good stuff!

Many gun channels get the same results ----- for revolver ammo it's Buffalo Bore all the way --- for auto ammo Underwood loads their ammo a tiny bit hotter BUT Buffalo Bore's hard cast bullets are harder than Underwood's hard cast bullets -- However I seriously doubt any deer or bear will know the difference in hardness! In Alaska the B.B. 357 mag seems a far better choice with harder bullets and 147 fps faster --- could make the difference with a thousand pound grizzly.

It's not strange that the slower bullets went deeper, look up Garrett ammo hammer heads 45-70 they can out penatrate a 458wm because the speed of the mag is used as energy

I’ve never used either of them but from everything I’ve seen both seem to be great premium ammo. Probably gonna buy some of the Underwood soon over the Buffalo Bore just because the Underwood seems to be priced a bit better.

Wow, for us in Alaska you are posting much needed content. I've always wondered how these would compare and how much penetration a 9mm would get. Most KZbin channels will put one, maybe two gel blocks back-to-back and then throw a bunch of water jugs behind them. Not a consistent medium, way too high of a chance of a bullet going wary, and just not as "scientific" as your methods. This is especially helpful for those shooters who maybe can't handle the recoil of a 10mm or stronger, so knowing 9mm hard cast can still get the job done is very needed. Thanks Gun Dungeon.

As per usual, Underwood falls shy of Buffalo Bore in rimmed revolver loads, whereas they typically excel in rimless semi-auto loads. The 180gr Buffalo Bore .357 magnum gave you 4-inch L-frame published data velocity, from your 4-5/8-inch SAA.
@mkshffr49363 ай бұрын
In the 357 (which is the only one of these which interests me) the wound track was noticeably better so you do get something for the extra money. It is questionable whether it is worth the extra money however.

Underwood is one of the best most constant ammo on the market for the price i carry Underwood in my home defense AR all my pistols.
@erichanson7293 Жыл бұрын
Good review. Both manufacturers produce suitable woods loads. It is interesting to note that the Winchester 9mm M1152 115 gr FNJHP will also penetrate 48" of clear ballistics gel. It's a fairly hot load and zips right on through. It's cheaper, too. Does that make it a great bear defense load?...
@thegundungeon Жыл бұрын
Personally if I’m using a hard cast as defense, I want the widest, flattest front area on the bullet I can get. Even though these rounds all penetrated sufficiently, I’d still carry my 44 mag with a 310g gas checked handload.

@@mghegotagun they looked very similar to me. I still have them sitting here and I can’t tell a difference. Thanks to you I know now this Buffalo Bore is fantastic .... but too fantastic to use in defense toward another human being. Big chonkin' bear? Sure. Moose? Likely. Maaaaybe if there are 3 bad guys standing in a row. No need for overpenetration + collateral damage! I'll stick to what's in my stockpile now. Here's hoping it never has to be used. (Knocks on desk)

I don’t understand the purpose of hardcast in 9mm. Any FMJ 124 gr 9mm will also penetrate in gel as much. I kinda do in those larger calibers, but I would prefer JSP in .357, 44mag and the bigger 460-500 as well. With JSP you get deep penetration with a little bit of deformation. A lot cheaper price too!

@johnw4999 Жыл бұрын
There’s not enough of a difference to make a difference between the two companies to justify the expense of BB over UW. And as you said, UW provides nickel plated cases over brass. While brass is fine, nickel is better (and costs more).

EXCELLENT VIDEO. ILL STICK with Buffalo Bore. Especially if it is hollow point bullets. Underwood uses Nosler bullets that mushroom too quickly and don't penatrate near as deep as I prefer. Buffalo Bore uses XTP from Hornady.

An often overlooked 3rd comparable option IMO is doubletap ammunition. They have very similar advertised velocities and loadings to Underwood and BB.

@@thegundungeon They used to have sales all the time pre covid, I used to buy from them a lot. Their 9mm+P gold dot load has as much velocity as UW's and BB's 9mm+P+ loads do. As a reloader of over 44years of knowledge, experience of many calibers I know hard cast bullets, even those with 22to 24 brinnel hardness factor have usefulness with the right application. many people want to super charge there ammunition. but hard cast bullets can be pushed two fast and break up. unless person doesn't live around anyone these type bullets should only be use for its intended purpose. these 3 test calibers would have no problem shooting through my old wood frame house with lap German pine siding.to each there own options.
