Congrats! Love the channel btw! Personally I think its one of the best out here currently in the KZbin Gun Community. While I'm here I'd like to point out something you mention in the video. You make the claim that the Underwood 115gr XP is not exactly +P performance. However I think you forgot to figure in that copper is a lighter material. Therefore it occupies more of the case's space for the bullet to be of the same weight as a standard lead core bullet. And to achieve the velocities it is. +P pressures are required. Also +P does not always mean higher velocity. While many automatically assume that and often that is the case. It is not a guarantee. +P simply means higher than standard SAAMI pressures specs. Whether its 2% higher or 10. Again congratulations. I look forward to more videos from you.

The 'Xtreme' designation for this ammo applies more accurately to the barrier-blindness of the projectile. Hornady, Sig Sauer and other JHP rounds won't maintain the target effectivness of the Underwood (or Lehigh) when that taget is behind a barrier, like auto glass, auto doors, ply wood and dry wall.
@jimlacefield71767 жыл бұрын
I purchase ammo to stop a threat in a self defense situation. If I'm firing on someone that is behind plywood or doors I'm doing it wrong.

Jim Lacefield i don't know about you, but the homes I've lived in have all had doors, walls and plywood. And I've never been carjacked, but the cars ive been in all have doors and windshields. The four barriers I listed are only mediums that I have seen tests of here on yt. Against all of those barriers, the lehigh/underwood XP/XD projectiles had best results for maintaining trajectory, barrier penetration and effectiveness within the intended target once the barriers had been overcome.
@corybrown99337 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Weathers , exactly. That's what sold me on this stuff. As far as .380 goes, hollow points will barely get 7" in unobstructed gel.

It doesn't matter. FMJ in 380 works about as good as the best HP +P. Just hit your target center mass once. Each bullet has about a 30-40% chance to stop the worst charging rhino, and generally 1 hit will deter anyone but a pissed off ex-spouse , drug crazed pyscopath .or Jason or Micheal Myers. those might need 2-3. shot placement /hitting your target , counts alot more than what bullet you hit them with

An old video, with newer versions of the ammo available. However, two aspects of the Underwood that weren't discussed (unless I missed it) is: 1) It's a "barrier blind" design; i.e., will penetrate auto glass, plywood, doors, etc., and penetrate, cause a wound channel, and still kill; and 2) it won't fail to expand completely, and thus fail to create a wound channel like many hollow points by plugging the cavity with outer clothing. These are huge plusses over hollow points, especially with the newer Underwood Extreme Defense design which reduces the over penetration aspect. It may even work against body armour - I'd like to see that test. RIP Paul. You're the best.

I was curious to hear your take on this ammo. I have to appreciate the fact that some creative engineer is finally trying to convert the kinetic energy which had hitherto been invested in spin solely for stability into the cavitation now being caused by those spinning fins. Great example of the results of someone thinking "outside the box".
@WJS7745 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's the spin energy, I think the scoops out the front and the flat nose give it higher drag than a round nose, so it dumps its forward energy quicker than ball. Higher drag is why expanded hollow-points dump their energy quicker too, it's just a way to get the higher drag without expanding.
@wes326 Жыл бұрын
If the bullet has a 1:10 twist rate then it might spin once or a little more in a human sized target between entrance and exit. I don't think that is enough to do much. But I could be wrong.

Paul, I tested the 65 grain "extreme defender" .380 version of this ammo along with the 90 grain "extreme penetrator" stuff that you tested using my own version (copy?) of your meat target. I saw pretty much what you did with the 90 grain xp stuff, but I saw a lot more damage to the "soft tissue" with the 65 grain xd ammo. Unfortunately winter set in here in Ohio before I could repeat my test to verify that but considering the poor expansion of hollow points in a 380 I switched to the underwood 65 grain extreme defender for my own carry ammo (in an LCP). They SEEM better than hollow points in 380. One thing I also saw was that in the hard ribs, the holes it made were just like FMJ, the real difference was in the sim. lung tissue. I am going to try it again in the spring. Maybe with my own hand loads??

For those who may have the same question as I do. The 380 ACP Underwood load being tested here is the standard pressure version. 380 ACP 90 Grain Xtreme Penetrator SKU 643. This is based off Paul stating the advertised velocity of 1100 fps at the 1:14 mark.
@Predalien1957 жыл бұрын
To my understanding the Xtreme Penetrator wasnt exactly designed to get more penetration than typical FMJ, but rather give you similar depth of penetration but a more consistent wound cavity. FMJ has a tendency to be real shallow after a certain point and not exactly very consistent. That being said, the make the Xtreme Defender which is pretty much the same type of round but with larger broader flutes in the bullet to deliver even larger cavities while keeping good penetration. I've found this ammo in small calibers like .380, .32 ACP, and so on.. it works wonderfully. But in the larger calibers it's simply not that impressive. I've seen them in .45-70, and frankly I dont see a point. When it comes to hunting, there's far more effective rounds for the task. But even if you pressed it into self defense, still far more effective projectiles. I've seen plenty of people buy this stuff to take hunting because they're expecting miracle results using something like the 9mm Xtreme Penetrator on hogs and complaining it wont go shoulder to shoulder. Knowing full well FMJ likely wouldnt either and if it did it wouldnt stop the hog dead in it's tracks. I guess people really misunderstand what this round is meant to do... it doesnt help that flashy advertisement saying "Xtreme Penetrator" sticks out in your faces making you believe it's going to get some crazy high level of penetration. But like I said, I think it was designed to get JHP levels of consistent wound cavities with FMJ level penetration, which I recall hearing that in an interview some guys from Lehigh Defense. And if I find the video I will link it for those to see. But honestly, that's what this round does.. FMJ levels of penetration with a more consistent wound channel. Great for small calibers like .32 ACP, .32 S&W Long/Short, not too bad for a .32 H&R Magnum either but plenty of other good rounds available. Same with .38 Special, not too bad for snub nose guns, but with a longer barrel there's better options.
@lonewanderer36037 жыл бұрын
Christopher I don't think they make this in 32. They have an Extreme Cavitator, which is basically a #2 square drive instead of a Phillips screwdriver bit.
@Predalien1957 жыл бұрын
+Lonewanderer360 The Xtreme Cavitator is essentially at it's core the same design and all testing of my own and from others show it's performance is the same as the Xtreme Penetrator. I believe they had to change the shape and design when going with a .32 caliber round as there were complications with the normal design.
@sproutpits7 жыл бұрын
I've also seen evidence that it does a much better job of being effective after penetrating a windshield, drywall or plywood, which might be another reason for the moniker. Where hollowpoints expand early and/or clog with debris, the xtreme penetrator retains its shape all the way to the target.
@Predalien1957 жыл бұрын
+sproutpits Well as I mentioned in my first post from what I understand as mentioned it was designed to penetrate like FMJ. I dont know if it does a better job than FMJ for windshields, drywall, or plywood and the likes in terms of penetration, bullet deviation, kinetic energy dump, etc. But I do know it will be more effective than an FMJ if it should hit the target on the other side. The XP's almost remind me of wad cutter bullets only they dont seem to keyhole or tumble inside gel and other mediums.

Most people can't shoot very well to begin with, so there is just as much danger to bystanders that someone will miss the intended target as overpenetration. The advantage of this ammo really comes in if there are barriers involved. As always know what's behind your target. Great video! I very rarely carry a Ruger LCP .380 but when I do it's with this ammo.

My cousin just bought a Sig P365 in 9x19mm, probably due to current events in her big city. Now's not the time to learn, but it's better than nothing. Ammo isn't very available, but she got Buffalo Bore +P HC FN lead for bears and moose like I recommended. The only other available ammo was Xtreme penetrator. I used this vid to show why she should get HP ASAP lol Also the one about barrier penetration, a big concern in a crowded city for an office worker. You video about the Sig P365 was a big factor in convincing her to get that specific pistol many months ago (after I took her to every gun shop in the city to physically try every pistol under the sun lol), once the reliability problems had been worked out with the first releases and it was available with a thumb safety (the main reason she didn't go for the Glock 26, despite immediately loving it!). Thanks for putting this information out for free to The People. I've used it to make myself and several interested people around me better prepared and safer

That 9mm round gets 150% penetration compared to a standard FMJ in gel. This test shows that gel has limitations when it comes to a test medium.
@Jesses0017 жыл бұрын
I would not had remembered you if you had not used that nick name, haha. Yes, all tests have their limitations, and we can not exactly get living humans to test on, so we do with what we got.
@Jesses0017 жыл бұрын
Gel tests are suppose to simulate the effects of flesh on projectiles. In gel tests, these rounds penetrate much further, but a more realistic target they do not, indicating that the gel tests are not representative of what they are attempting to showcase. Now this does not mean the gel tests are useless, but it shows the limitations of what a gel test can show us.
@steviesevieria18687 жыл бұрын
Jesse Sisolack I would say the meat target has limitations as well, such as inconsistent size, sometimes appearing maybe a 90% scale to an adult human, also lack of fat, which some human targets would have plenty of... However ballistic gel and the meat targets both give a certain amount of information that can be useful. The takeaway from this is you will do just as well with Remington (or other low cost) hollow points than the expensive Underwood Ammo in your 9mm.
@nates.42327 жыл бұрын
The extreme penetrator doesn't tumble ln gel like other bullets, hence further penetration.
@Jesses0017 жыл бұрын
Yes, even the meat target has limitations.
@brandonedwards71445 жыл бұрын
This maybe a year to late but I think there has been a mix up. There is a difference between the extreme defense and the extreme penetrators.The fluting of the bullet is thinner with a larger cavity on the penetrators were as the defense is much thicker and shallower much like what is shown in the video and those are designed to not over penetrate. They are fluid displacement rounds, they work off the spin of the bullet and using the fluting to create a larger wound cavity. I could go on explaining but these are very cool rounds to research. Paul your you tube channel is one of the best if you're looking for knowledge or insight on firearms. Thank you for all the great videos.

Yea, it's weird that the "Extreme Penetrator" round penetrates... I remember TNoutdoors9 freaking out when he couldn't get one to stop in something like 32" of gel. I WOULD, however, like to see a test of the Extreme Defender against the meat target in .380 and 9mm. I'd be willing to purchase the ammo in the name of science.

Thank you, sir! I just purchased a Glock 42, .380 for my wife. I like seeing a critical analysis of the capabilities and limitations of this ammunition; since it was what I was led to believe was the most effective .380 ammunition available for self-defense. We bought the Xtreme Defender version of this ammunition; for fear of overpenetration. Now, I think I will invest in the Xtreme Penetrator.

I thought Underwood only made devilled ham and chicken spread. Who knew? Interesting video. Going by this and other videos on .380 ammo, it's looking like the Hornady Critical Defense is as good as it gets. This one seems a viable option too, though kind of gimmicky.

Paul- I recommend a presentation on the topic of comparing steel and lead shot for a shotgun. Also, it would be nice if you could shed some light on the 10 gauge shotgun because there is very little information about it on youtube.

I think they named it the Extreme Penetrator due to the fact that it peforms great through hard barriers like car doors and windshields. It is designed to dump it's energy in soft tissue. Semper Fi, love your videos.

Not real impressed with this ammo. If I want more penetration I'll use fmj. Which I do carry a spare mag alternating hollow points and fmj. I will stick with federal HST and fmj's. Thanks for another great video Paul
@Kratos_God_of_50_BMG7 жыл бұрын
Good to keep a mag of FMJ , in case you have to shoot through a windshield. I wasn’t impressed with the 9mm at all, but the 10mm stuff goes 1600fps. Not sure about the +P .45 though.
@dennis48377 жыл бұрын
I think the point of his ammo is that it penetrates well while still causing a lot of damage to soft tissue. FMJs don't really do much soft-tissue damage.
