Ladies and gentlemen, Underworld has entered a second golden era, this quick 'n' dirty guerrilla-style creative approach is suiting them beautifully.

Third golden era?

Sitting here writing some stuff for work and DAMMIT this is so freaking good I stop what I'm doing and just listen in awe. Somebody else here said "Underworld has entered a second golden era..." and that is absolutely true. Jaw on floor.

Classic underworld. It's more if a trip than a song. Journey through a dark soundscape, gives me hope.

Love this track. Reminds me of Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon's On the Run. Incredible suite of music overall though, such an amazing and freeing concept. Hats off to Karl and Rick for such dedication to the art.

This is BRILLIANT. A return to the dark, nocturnal techno sound of the Dark & Long and Cowgirl EPs. SO GOOD!
@Mibit91110 ай бұрын
Right everyone was saying this is back to second toughest but I disagree except for the banging bass 2nd toughest had. To me second toughest is more of a floaty happy ethereal album like an empty world of just bright water and a blue sky and your floating in it. Dubnobass on the other hand is dark moody, and hypnotizing with its nocturnal synths thay pull you into this underground world of techno covered in large buildings ands Grey sky's where it always rains but it's your home and the city never sleeps

@@Mibit911 I agree, this is a cool jam but it's missing any real melodic progressions in the bass or the upper registers. It's missing those lush cords and pads from either of those two albums. This is a different direction in my opinion.
@zonesquestiloveunderworld17 күн бұрын
@@theblowupdollsmusicI can't say I disagree entirely, I suppose I was referring specifically to minimal tracks like "Cowgirl [Winjer Mix]", "Dark Hard" and "Burts", which are some of my all-time favourites; if you're not into minimal techno I can totally understand disliking this track. I do echo your comment about the lack of melodic development, though; while I absolutely love "Drift" overall, it's a recurring issue throughout - so many of the tracks just don't go anywhere particularly interesting, despite having so much potential. I feel like they've struggled somewhat with this since "Barking", which was almost entirely devoid of progression and adhered far too rigidly to a pop song verse/chorus/verse format and mid-tempo "anthemic" feel. IMO "Barbara" somewhat improved upon this and was in many ways a more successful attempt at the "Barking" approach (sans the superfluous collaborations). But once again most tracks simply settle into a groove and then stay there. "Drift" has a lot of variety and there's several tracks that IMO easily qualify among the band's repertoire of classics, but once again there's a lack of progression permeating throughout. Somewhere along the way, Underworld became an electronic jam band! 😅 Unfortunately, the newest album "Strawberry Hotel" hasn't really rectified these issues, and the fact that most tracks are 2-3 minutes is pretty disappointing, with only a single one, the very rudimentary and repetitive "Gene Pool", extends beyond 5 minutes. It's a shame, because Rick is a ludicrously talented producer with some absolutely brilliant ideas, and he's got a fantastic ear for subtlety and textural depth, but I feel like he needs someone to give these ideas a broader structure and an underlying progressive foundation. I wish they'd let Karl's voice take a backseat more often too - I love his voice and it's iconic, but I feel like his voice is all too often the only source of melodic engagement and variation, while layers of similar-sounding synths loop simplistic arpeggios endlessly, often without a single interesting change throughout a given track's duration.

@@Mibit911It's crazy that two people can hear the same music and have such radically divergent impressions! I would never use adjectives like "happy" and "floaty" to describe "Second Toughest", for me it's a pensive, introspective night-time journey into a hallucinatory nebula of pure abstraction, perfect for sitting in the darkness and reflecting on life and the nature of reality. Whenever I listen to it I imagine hurtling though vast gloomy caverns brimming with amorphous, constantly shifting entities of pure energy, and mind-warpingly elaborate and intricate machines speeding down rollercoaster-esque highways that course and thread their way through planets and outer space. I can definitely relate to that sense of floating in water with "Stagger", though - that imagery really suits the atmosphere of the track. The only track that sounds remotely "happy" to me is "Blueski", but that's not so much "happiness" per se, more "a well-deserves relaxation after heavy exertion"... maybe "To Dream of Love" too, but it's a very specific, ecstatic kind of "happiness". But your interpretation is intriguing, and has inspired me to listen to the album again with your descriptions in mind. 🙏

My interpretation of this track, for what its worth: A person trying to convince themselves they are ok (I'm good, I'm alright), but something dark is brewing deep within and gathers momentum until it literally erupts and takes over. When it finally subsides they are left with the aftermath. The threat of rain was actualised and boy did it pour and now everything is drenched.
