I had a late friend, God rest her soul, who did maths lit, Geography and consumer studies. I did pure maths and accounting. We both ended up as Law graduates. She opened her own firm 2 years before her passing. So guys, you create your own path. Research, take in a lot of info, think of the future and whatever subject you choose, just make sure you excel at it.

Some of Mpho's points are really from a point of privilege , you cannot argue that people who haven't had water and electricity for weeks should go protest in Sandton . I think for coversation like this one maybe yall should consider inviting education activists who strike in the beginning of each year so that when you speak about education of the black child you speak from an informed place father than blaming black people for reacting to a system which constantly oppresses them. Some coversations are more complex

Academics is not a gift. The ability to sing is. The difference is some people need to work harder than others to grasp certain concepts. Take your life into your own hands. Take your learning into your own hands. If you need to go home and watch a KZbin video, ask chat GPT and spend additional time to understand algebra do that. ❤️ The people who tell you Maths is hard lied to you, what makes it hard is you not wanting to put in the additional work. ❤️

Eish that comment put me off, that time I did pure maths in high school and passed well. It's like our parents saying music is not a legit career. Not everyone is going to take the same path. Life is non linear. "unconventional" careers are also conventional. Career choices are vast, you just need information. Also make sure to pass maths lit well, if you are going to take it as a subject.

I am personally offended by the views regarding learners who decide to do Mathematical Literacy as a subject hey, Mpho and Caiah are speaking from a point of privilege and being able to perform well at Pure Math forgetting that the next person's strength may not lie in that. If you literally have nothing positive to say about a subject that you did not study at high school, kindly keep your opinion to yourself instead of discouraging learners who are interested in Mathematical Literacy. I remember being referred to as "Letlapa" at high school and I can now say that I am a 3rd year LLB student with the very same Mathematical Literacy and History.

Got a science degree, graduated with good marks but still unemployed. Decided to stop having pride and apply for leanerships outside of my degree and retail jobs. Guess what? Still got rejected. So i think the unemployment issue is better addressed by someone who actually knows the pain of getting rejection letters everyday, someone who has tried so hard to even study something new but can’t coz of funding and all. Someone from deep rurals. We have all tried out best best but unfortunately we won’t have proof that we really did try except the scars that we got when we came back from trying. I’m sorry but the unemployment is too deep for someone who is from a stable background to understand. And people can’t be saying “you are not trying enough,explore other options” coz i swear half of us have been there done that. It’s tough out there. Opened a mini selling business as tiktokers usually suggests and it still failed. Unfortunately we end up struggling with that distinction in maths. That’s the reality

I hear Mpho but I think some things could've been delivered better, The issue of unemployment is much more complex, it isn’t only due to picking the wrong subjects in high school or going for that "useless" degree, or simply not trying hard enough. In as much as those things are some of the factors that may reduce your chances of employment, the job market is crazy on its own as well, companies have ridiculous requirements, and many online certificates mean little to nothing & even with a degree that is considered to a "good degree", they still want experience for entry level positions

But we cant all take the same subjects, there needs to be a balance. We need people in political science degrees, we need people in sociology - i really think we undermine these degrees and assume the best degrees are the ones that we require maths and physics. If we're being quiet honest, the people who are going to be solving most of our social issues in the country, their degrees do not require math . SA just doesnt create jobs for them to actually put their degrees to use. In order to dismantle poverty, lack of food supply, crime etc. we need your social workers, your criminologists and many more. The ability to think critically is not just routed in studying maths and physics , but even subjects that do not require your maths. Shu , shu, shu - i have so much to say but let me just leave it here.

The reason that other countries say we are lazy is because they know nothing but suffering and hardships in their countries. In order for them to get anything in their country they have to work hard, their leaders don’t look after their citizens: whereas in South Africa we have access to free healthcare free education, social grant and RAF, so they come here and see all these opportunities and they compare themselves to us. I remember one guy from Nigeria said I need to support my mother since she’s over 65 & I told them we have pension funds and that supports us and if you don’t have one you can get a grant, and they were shocked.

I read the comments and like what was happening when she used the word "dump" but listening to her full context and taking the full sentence she wasn't wrong. For as long as people sugar coat things, and are polite about calling us out we won't hear it. We also need to let go of the victim mentally and be objective and self introspect. To be honest there were some things where I was like OK she's angry 😂she needs a break but nothing she said wasn't true... We need to be called out. Luckily we have Caiah who said almost the same thing but she was so mature and brought balance to the conversation. She didn't become passionate, she chilled and walked us through her brain. I fully agree. As someone who did Mathematical Literacy, it definitely incapacitates an individual academically, and because STEM programs are essentially the future of probable employment because many careers will be phased out by AI & Robotics. We really need to eradicate procrastination & laziness from our lives, because this is exactly why we underachieve at school & such complacency would only be evident and hard hitting once you've left high school, and your options in tertiary are then limited & you only have admission to qualifications that are saturated & will leave you unemployed. I'd even go on to say that Mathematical Literacy must be phased out of the South African curriculum. Pure Maths must be compulsory for everyone and a reform in our subjects too. Early child development & foundation phase in primary school needs a lot of work, with basic arithmetic because kids are struggling with basic Maths.
@lelomodise
@lelomodise 2 ай бұрын
@@givenmabussi but then again we need to consider the fact that not all degrees require pure maths. I hear your point, i actually feel that maths lit is pointless to a certain extent, depending on what you intend on studying,because even when I applied for bcom in accounting, I had to make sure I always have my mathlit mark above 70% to ensure I at least get considered. Now, my question is, there needs to be a balance. We cannot all be engineers, doctors etc. (And I mean this with no disrespect) I think the problem is that our government is not focusing on creating jobs that South Africa needs such as your social workers, criminologists, instead these degrees are looked down upon when in actual fact we , especially as a country that has so many social issues , we need to be creating these jobs. So , in my opinion, the problem is not the subjects entirely but the lack of job creation for degrees that do not require your physics and maths subjects. I do believe that not everyone is going to be good in pure maths unfortunately. I do think (if you really know the degree you are going to do does not require maths) stick to maths lit because a 60/70% in mathslit is better than a 30% in pure maths.
@givenmabussi
@givenmabussi 2 ай бұрын
@@lelomodise I totally agree with your point and we definitely need government, along with the private sector to ensure that there's job creation, especially in artisan work, which I commend TVET College's for doing. The more work created, to cater for qualifications that aren't in demand, the more employability but now the issue is AI & Robotics. There's so many qualifications that have technically become "useless" because automation has taken over, and my biggest worry is that AI will be intergrated so quickly, leaving so many young people behind, considering how marginalized we are already due to the lack of resources. So, we've got a huge issue on our hands as the youth of SA. Henceforth, there's a reason why Pure Maths is a lot of desirable to do, so that in the event a career is phased out, there's options. It's a weird time to be a young person, because there's so much uncertainty of how the world will look like in a decade or two. But, I completely agree with your view.

What I advice someone younger than me is always take pure maths (and maybe physical science) but you can take any other subject you want even business because if you think about it universities don’t care that if you did accounting for you to do BCom accounting you know… i say that because with doing the easiest subject and excelling in them you can literally pick any uni you wanna go too especially if you don’t know what you want to do in grade 9 you know 😭… but if you don’t have pure maths… it’s chaai the options will be very limited 😭😪

Hi, I am in grade 10 and I take Physics, Lifescience and CAT (Computer Applications Technology) I want to drop CAT for Business but now I am not sure. Should I continue with the subject and future proof my life, or do I go for business and get better marks there which could increase my average?

Also with the subject chat, ( yes it’s y’all’s opinion) but I think y’all need to be stopped now. There’s a way to share your insight and be heard and there’s a way you guys do it and it’s hard to digest. Let people choose the subjects they see fit , thank you for the advices but we can’t shy away from the fact that some people are not gifted in numbers and that makes them feel even more dumb and by doing Maths Lit they can top charts it’s nothing new. And some of us did Maths Lit and today we have something to show for it, so it’s just a matter of preference and being able to work things through. (Do give advice but don’t dumb down what other people can prefer and are forced to do) . Great show by the way ❤️

@@yenkosithulamthembu and some people having learning disabilities that require them to take those subjects said to be "easier", while they're in normal schools because they cannot afford specialised schools that cater to their learning disabilities. So they have to keep up with other kids just to get through school. So if marsh lit is easier for them, I don't see why not. I think this conversation is so vast and there's no way the 2 ladies could've covered it.

@@SibsM93 true I agree with you cause if maybe I was part of them I’d have raised that perspective and we would dive into it but because it’s the two of them they couldn’t go as far as that thinking point. (Just that my point is they must not dumb down subjects that others are required to do)

They can't change the pass rate unless all schools are up to standard so many black kids do not recieve the education they deserve so raising the pass rate would only make it worse for the Black Community

I would also advise against Maths lit. I took it and despite being a distinction girl, It didn't serve me at all in fact it set me up for failure. I am currently rectifying my mistake right now and studying a Stem degree with Mancosa. A different route to the same place, but I feel like I didn't even give maths a chance because I am falling in love with Maths only now.

What I am concurrently watching with this video is another one by: Danielle - Money Making Homemaker, and she shared: Proverbs 16:9 and I read it in the *OJB* translation - The lev adam plans his derech, but Hashem directeth his steps. I think we strategize and plan our physical road or pathway/metaphoric journeys, manner or course (derech) in our hearts (lev) as man (adam) but don't often allow the Lord (Hashem) to direct our steps as we go out in search of business opportunities and job prospects
