Question? When you are in tow or side tow do you have to announce a security call on 16?
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 4 ай бұрын
No. The only time I do is when towing a big boat through a narrow bridge and that's just to cover my ass in case of an incident. I'd say at least 75% (probably higher) of the boats in the area don't monitor CH16...so there's not much point and we're not required to anyway

That guy must be good at something to afford that catamaran. Boating probably isn't it. 😆

I forget exactly what his speciality is, but he's a doctor in Tampa. As far as his boating skills, having a mechanical issue with your boat doesn't mean you're not "good at boating"

Not being able to figure out how to follow the tow boat make you not good at boating.

If I was encountering large boats like that on the regular I would run a GoPro feed from the blind side back to the tow vessel via the wifi feature to have eyes on that side during difficult dockings.
@CaptKenO

Have you ever tried looking at your phone though a gopro before? It's for framing reference, not to actually see anything useful. Screen is too small and I'd have to focus on that and not the bigger picture

Sounds like a AI novel. Camera probably doesn't do it justice, looked like a pretty easy tow job. Why didn't he just come in one the one good engine ? Thanks Love all the rescues.

Thanks trucker! With the engines being so far offset, he wouldn't have had any directional control using just one engine

that was hard to watch!! You would think common sense would entice the crew to steer their boat to make the tow easier.

I have a question, why do you leave your engines running all the time. Seems like you would burn through a ton of fuel let alone the wear and tear.

Are you talking about the boat I'm towing?
@mediadaemon

@@CaptKenOI've noticed this too, except in salvage refloats, typically your engines are idling the entire time even when long periods of time pass tied to a stuck boat waiting for confirmation or the like. I figured its just to always be ready for sea conditions.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 6 ай бұрын
It's more wear and tear on the engines to stop/restart them than to leave them running, and the fuel consumption is less than $10/hr at idle

It’s also a safety thing if he needs to make a quick maneuver. Running engines go into gear much quicker than non running.

If he had a good engine, why'd he call a tow?
@CaptKenO

Too much differential thrust with the engines spread so far apart that the steering wouldn't be able to compensate

@@CaptKenO oh ok.. I was wondering. I remember an older fella in Reedsville VA once had a big cat with a dead engine and he was idling in just barely moving, and as we both met I was asking if there was anything I could do to help.. he said a cold beer and slow down so everyone would think it's just a super strong current. He made it back and I met up with him and turned out it was busted aluminum part on the water separator and the fuel line. There was nothing I could do but just hang out and give him encouragement.... and try to talk him out sinking the boat in the deepest part of the Chesapeake bay we could find. Lol
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 6 ай бұрын
Hahaha. That's hilarious 😂 I've had a few people ask me something along those lines as well...Can I sink it and call the CG instead of paying to be towed? Will you tow the boat offshore and sink it for me? What happens of we just let it sink? Etc. 🤣
