The red arrows pointing down are as I wrote in a previous comment, to show where the edge of the road is in winter. Hokkaido suffers from very heavy snowfall in winter and the red and white thin poles you will have seen in Fukushima and other places are simply inadequate in Hokkaido. The birds weren't storks, but cranes. Hokkaido has an indigenous population called the Ainu with their own distinct language and culture. Many of the place names in Hokkaido derive from the Ainu language and not Japanese. To learn about the Ainu, I suggest a visit to the Ainu museum in Shiraoi.

@eclecticexplorer7828 Жыл бұрын
You should have no fear of flying. You should only have fear of crashing. Seriously, though, statistically speaking, driving is far more dangerous per person-mile of travel. I have flown quite a number of times, and only once, when we encountered unusually severe turbulence, did I have even the slightest concern. On that one occasion, even the flight attendant telling us to remain calm seemed a bit shaken. Still, I will be boarding a plane again next month -- well, two, actually, as it is a round trip.

Hi, am enjoying your journey, spent a month in the south in 2006, staying with my daughters host family’s as well as a trip up to Tokyo etc. never been to Hokkaido so is interesting to see. When you get down to Kyushu go up Mt Unzen I think it’s called. One road up and another down. Magnificent views, different to what you’ve seen. Go up as far as you can drive then walk up the rest. I was fascinated with the different styled and coloured roofs as I travelled around. Each area was different. Loved the food, loved the people, loved the temples. Cant wait to watch your whole journey there. Want to go again next year. Enjoy!

Hokkaido is where most of Japan’s milk and cheese is grown and made. Lots of sheep, race horses etc are in Hokkaido too! Big grizzly bears live all over and once a huge grizzly bear was making its way into Wakkanai. My son helped with that issue, he is a hunter too. Hokkaido grows grapes for wine, but most wine is made in Yamanashi, nearish to Tokyo…

Hey guys, I just finished a road trip in Hokkaido, so I hope the following info will help you: - The speed limit is usually 50kph on all the national roads but no one seems to follow them. - We got pulled over by the police once and we thought it was because of our speed but no, it was because we failed to stop fully at the triangular yield signs. Apparently in Japan those mean STOP not yield! - So many deer! Be super careful on the hot spots (you can Google a map to see where the deer usually get hit) and don’t go too fast there. We almost hit one..! 😅 - All the IC (toll) expressways we encountered were one lane going each direction. Only some overtaking spots are allowed where there’s two lanes. So if you’re stuck behind a big truck the expressway becomes not so express. - Never found a problem with parking as it was plentiful and either free or 500 yen at big attractions. - if you’re looking for big flower fields, go to the Shikisai no Oka - Lastly.. Don’t miss the Shiretoko peninsula it’s so so beautiful 😻

Thank you for showing us a wonderful drive. I had a question about this red arrow. The red arrows have the following roles: Teaching the edge of the road in a snowy area In areas with heavy snowfall, when the snow piles up in earnest, the boundary between the roadway and the shoulder or side of the road becomes unrecognizable. There is also the danger of blizzards making it difficult to see in front of you. The red arrows show the driver the boundary between the roadway and the road shoulder or side strip. Even if the road is covered with snow and you cannot see the road, as long as you are careful not to enter the area indicated by the arrow, you can pass without worrying about deviating from the roadway. Also, even if visibility is poor due to a snowstorm, you can drive safely by following the arrows as landmarks. In this way, the arrows play the role of indicating the road shoulder in snowy areas. Please enjoy driving in Hokkaido.

Japan is a place with a lot of snow. If it snows, you won't know the location of the road, so arrows are set up on the side of the road as markings. A must have item for snow removal.

I've only been there many times in winter including working in Niseko (its like Bali on Ice for Aussies) for a season where over the season we get over 15meters of snow yet its Latitude is similar to Milan and Portland. Its due to a metrological condition where the cold air from SIberia gathers moisture from the Japan Sea and dumps the heavy snow on the whole of the island. Great to see it in summer. Japan is one place you come back from a changed person. BTW I also have the fearsome North Island Bear sticker on the tailgate of my Corolla and no-one tailgates me.
