Remi Adeleke's story reads like a movie script; from being born into African royalty in Nigeria, to losing everything and growing up on the mean streets of The Bronx, New York City, he knew he wanted to do something important with his life. Watch the video to see how he went on to join the U.S. Navy SEALs, and then break into the world of acting and writing. Narration by former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink.

He is telling the truth. His father owned what is now Osborne Estates and Dolphin phase 2. If you live in Lagos you would know this pieces of real estate worth about quarter of a million dollars per plot. He (late Adeleke ) dredged and worked on it. Only for it to be forcibly taken from him by the government of General Babangida. Who promptly shared it with his thieving cronies. I know this because I knew the man and what led to his downfall. Good to know the boys turned out okay. Kudos.

This is a great story. As someone who used to get jumped in Brooklyn and the Bronx and lived through the terror of the gangs, I can relate to his story. I joined the Navy when I was twenty going on twenty-one. I was a non-swimmer, but I managed to pass the swim test at OCS and achieve my goal of earning a commission after 8 years of service. I even qualified for command of submarines as a LT. Unfortunately, I was not selected for Executive Officer and retired after 23 years of total active service as LCDR, qualified in Submarines, Qualified Masters Level in Strategic Weapons and Qualified for Command.

Bravo Sierra. Blacks can, and always have, contributed much to units….after we gave them equal rights in fully integrated units. I recall one in particular: an SFC; Ranger SF; Infantry; and IMPRESSIVE!. He was our primary instructor for “hand to gland”. He took an AK-47 round through one lung, so he had only one functioning lung. Once he healed, the Army started to discharge him, but he refused. He had to max out the PT test to stay in. Then the Army decided he couldn’t stay in the Green Berets. He fought that, as well. The Army agreed to him remaining in SF, if he more than maxed out the SF qualification. He was fully occupational in 1971. I recall one day in particular: we were bused to the sandpit for training; the driver was playing his radio too loud, so the SFC called out on the bullhorn to turn off the radio. Radio didn’t change. He called out 2-3 times to turn it down. No change. So this Soldier with only one lung threw down the bullhorn and yelled out to shut it off. Silence. I served with Black soldiers who were SF and regular Army. Some were good, marginal, and bad: just like the White soldiers.

I totally had it backwards when I was in college. My dad suggested I do Army ROTC to start a career path while I wanted to be a theatre major and act in the movies someday. I ended up getting a theatre degree, which didn't pay off. But maybe if had stuck with being an army officer I would have gotten roles in big films after serving! Lesson learned here is DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR PRIDE! I'm grateful for my degree but it hasn't paid off in the real world. No matter what industry you end up working in (be it entertainment or not), veterans and people with combat experience ALWAYS have a leg up on the competition. Prolly, the only discipline they learn is how to embezzle funds and intimidate civilians. I know this isn't exclusive to my country. I read earlier this week of an ex-service guy in the U.S who wanted to sell off the architecture of the new nuclear submarine but was intercepted by the FBI. Apart for the pride of being the military, anyone can attain an enviable height with a transformed mind and diligence/hardwork. Transformation is a spiritual thing. It's beyond motivational talks... Well, yes, Remi is FROM Nigeria but I think that it's important that some context is given to what you just said because the way that you put it is misleading(even if you didn't intend for it to be) and it almost makes it sound like he stayed in Nigeria and just became a Navy SEAL. Did you listen to the part in the narration when it was pointed out that his mother permanently relocated the family to America when he was a child? He was born in Nigeria but he GREW UP in America(the Bronx in New York City, to be exact) and is an American citizen(neither of which you mentioned in your post when you referred to him as a ''Nigerian Navy SEAL'' ). So if you want to call him ''Nigerian-American'' or even ''African-American''(as unlike most black Americans who are referred to that way, it's legitimate to describe Remi that way) then that's a fair assessment. But he's an AMERICAN Navy SEAL of Nigerian heritage and origins just like Thomas''Drago''Dzieran is not a ''Polish Navy SEAL'' but an American Navy SEAL of Polish origins.
