The TLDR version. yep its a reskin of BSG, but its a streamlined one that is pretty good for a new audience. I think there is enough of the core experience here for this to be a hit with a whole new audience. And yes, it is just a new edition of a game. But because BSG was gone and never coming back, i'm glad they could salvage the mechanics for this project.

I played this recently. I did enjoy the slightly tighter gameplay but I still love the BSG theme more. But this is now readily available and can play with fewer people. Definitely a good purchase for fans of BSG or players who enjoy social deduction.

Recently had my first game of Unfathomable and it's like night and day. This version got the balance down much better than it's predacessor. It's fair while still maintaining the tension. Our game result: The traitor was keeper of the tome and got captain handed to him on a silver platter by a crisis. >< Humanity won due to luck flipping on him hard. His big reveal is he prematurely set off the ritual to kill two passengers while we only had three souls left...and both were the X ones. Luckily, the other two players were both combat characters so he was in the brig right after and we were able to make it to the end. It also helped that one player got a card that let him send one of the worst destination cards to the bottom of the deck so the traitor got denied the chance to screw us that way.

@@EliteBadFrog It was really good, we limped into port with one lot of coal remaining and two thirds of the ship on fire.... We played the starter scenario, so only two hybrids, if we'd had a cultist too, it could have been a loss.... Really good fun, can't wait to play again

Question: As a known BSG fanatic, would you buy/have you bought this game? My own copy of BSG never leaves my house because of the obvious difficulty of replacing it. If my group wants to play it, they have to come to my place. Is Unfathomable a suitable substitute to take traveling, or would you just take BSG?

I think i would, if you love pepperoni pizza, but all they have is half pepperoni/half plain, its not so bad. I think for travel, no sure. ive never taken bsg out of my house

Catan, 2/5. Don't know the other game For other examples 1.) Kids can play, rules teach is a minute or so. Uno 2.) Most folks will find this easy enough to play, Catan, Ticket to ride 3.) A bit of a gamers game, has multiple mechanics and requires a proper teach. Most hobby games 4.) this is starting to get tricky, big rulebooks, lots of little rules. Things like Gloomhaven, Gaia project and other "heavy games" 5.) I rarely roll this out, but its for games that are incredibly deep and have a lot of moving parts. Leaving Earth, where you have to calculate mass and load on rockets through multiple maneuvers in space, or deep wargames with 50 page rulebooks fit here.

Not keeping it, and no, I don't think there is room for both. I think its mechanically a little better than BSG core box as it has some refinements. But they are really the same game as an experience. And if you do end up liking this more than BSG, sell your BSG, plenty of people still want it

Hope they fix the horrid balance issues BSG had. Two big problems always cropped up when I played that game. 1. There was no room for any of the social deduction stuff. It was just back to back to back to back battles that completely took over the game and never ended. 2. It was way too easy for the cylons to win. Most times I've played, the Cylon player literally won by doing nothing because it's so slanted against humanity.

Played 40 odd times and I can't agree with those statements. But i will refer back to my comment in the video that the game is very group dependent. We never had those issues with our group and i'd say the cylons would win perhaps 55% of the time

@@3MBG Friend who introduced me to the game told me as much but apparently I've had terrible luck. We'd make a jump after some horrible RNG stretched the initial fight. Very next crisis: ANOTHER battle before we got a chance to take a breath. It was just exhausting.

I only played BSG once, with a previous game group; I didn't have a very good time, between one very loudly, very salty player and feeling fairly lost with how to play. Not knowing the IP it was based on didn't help. I imagine that this would go over much better with my current group, as we've played some other traitor-y games, and the Innsmouth theme certainly appeals more to me. I'll give this a look!

This games lives and dies on its group. Salty and loud people will kill it dead every time. Best played with good friends who can have a laugh at it

I have Dark Moon, and enjoy it. I have been a knob and been mean to a player who was just playing poorly, it's definitely an issue to be aware of.

It happens, just something to be mindful of and learn from. As I did as well. One of our most infamous games i went hard at a guy because he was the only person to have 2 types of cards, added to a challenge, and we had 3 negatives. He must have added them in. So of course he's the cylon. Turned out, he just had a brain fade over the cards in that challenge and that rule.

Fuel has always been virtually impossible to get, since when this game was battlestar galatica. That's by design. There is just enough fuel as long as it is not wasted, but it is the most important resource.
