The significance of the ring is because it is his mothers ring. It meant she gave her approval finally. Even Nick's mom was not proposed with his grandmother's ring because she did not like her. But the ring meant - the mother now is sorry and now wants you to be with her son.. Thats why ppl gasped, not because its a huge ring

Now she sees history being repeated and supports it. The jewelry in the movie was real, rented and heavily insured during filming. But that stunning emerald ring is the personal property of Michele Yeoh, who loaned it for the production because she insisted that it had to be right.

quite right. That was Nick's mom's ring. And that was the TOP reason Rachel said "yes" this time. SPIOLER ALERT: in the previous scene before this Rachel agreed to meet Nick one last time to say goodbye and Nick choose that moment to propose (with a ring he brought himself). Rachel said "no". But seeing Auntie Eleanor's ring Rachel realized Nick's mom had given her approval so Rachel's answer this time was "YES"
