It was a relief to get clearance to leave the area once the police had reopened the roads, certainly a rough few weeks x ❤️

The fires have been exceptional this year for September. Three firefighters killed and 4 members of the public along with countless farm animals. To add insult to injury, shortly after the fires were more or less extinguished, the same area that had been worst hit had heavy rain. Oh how different things could have been.

Welcome to Australian summers. Heatwaves, bushfires and drought. It's only Spring here and it's in the early 30's already. February is our hottest month. People here are buying air purifiers here to clean out the air in our houses when there is lots of smoke. Maybe a small air purifier will help your health.

@@redsgotravels - air purifiers have much better filters. Mine filters out 99.9% of allergens and it has UVC to kill germs. Great if you suffer asthma. I have a bigger one in my classroom to stop the flu germs spreading. Originally got it during the COVID times.

I was just thinking some of those trees look like the Australian native Eucalyptus trees. I just googled it and yes, they were introduced in the 1800's and are thriving in Portugal. Eucalypts are excellent hard-wood trees (at your dubious park-up beside the church).

@@redsgotravels - the oil within the leaves that makes them burn so well. The timber itself is slow burning and very hot. We use this timber in our fireplaces (yes, our houses are open plan and not suited to being warm in winter, so we need heaters). Eucalyptus plantation forests are used as renewable building resources. The trees I say at your lookout looked like Ghost Gums (grey trunks). We call them Widow Makers as limbs just drop down and kill anyone under them. Yeah - down park under a Gum tree.

March/April is the better time because you have better chance of the ground being damp. Summer and autumn are the worse for dry ground. By the way you may not know but in Portugal all the fireman are volunteers. Where we live in Spain on the coast we watch the firefighter planes coming down to load from the sea. Take care. Keep clear of forests sumner/autumn in Portugal and Spain.

Sorry to hear you guys had to abandon the middle part of the N2. I left Chaves on the 18th and the smoke and fires at the side of the roads was pretty horrendous. Other than that I had one 15 min detour approaching Viseu and managed to continue to Faro on the N2. There were some cracking roads on the bike from Almodôvar down to Faro. Hope you managed to rejoin it further south and get to Faro 🤞 ps, the pasteles de Chaves were yummy.

Yes we removed sd as a precautionary measure, but it still is illegal in Portugal and Austria , the grey area is using footage … so many articles online , hopefully they will catch up with the rest of the world soon … houses with cctv , mobile phones that record , cameras , drones , cars with inbuilt cameras and monitoring .. met 2 lots of police in Portugal, no issues , but yes , they are still illegal 🙂👌

When asked to remain put in a declared “safe area” by the authorities, you do so , you look at the app , the weather and pick the safest places, which we did … you don’t become a hindrance to the effort , wildfires are by nature wild and sporadic , hence us picking safe areas to hop to and progress North back to Spain .. glad you enjoyed 👌
