I am a farmer’s daughter and I alway laugh when people talk about these “Rich Farmers” It shows me how ignorant they are and if they don’t know about farm life, they just don’t know and shouldn’t talk about it. There are very hard times and once in awhile a really good time! The costs involved are astronomical, parts, machinery, vet bills, seed, fertilizer,feed additives, diesel, propane. We farmed Soybeans, Corn and hogs. We used some of our own corn to to grind feed for the hogs, every day grinding......vacations were out of the question, because if you weren’t working ground, planting or harvesting, the sows were farrowing (having babies) and you had all those to tend to. We used to be able to save our own seed until Monsanto stopped that🤬 They don’t like self-sufficiency. 🤬 Farming is the only occupation that you put everything into raising your crops, don’t know if you will be hailed out, flooded, or heat will eat up your crops. Most insurances are too high to pay. Then, after all that, you have to settle for what “the big guys” tell YOU they will pay you for it. The middle man makes the big bucks. Even with all that, most farmers can’t imagine a different life, Feeding the world is a BIG DEAL and should be held in high regard. God Bless all our farmers, Corn, beans wheat, barley, lettuce, oranges, cattle, hogs, bison EVERY CROP out there holding on, because if you don’t, you KNOW who will buy the land and “farm” the crops. All for only profits.....and the rest of us will REALLY PAY! That is their plan😪
@donnachase6322 жыл бұрын
I'm not a farmer but my grandmother was and I've seen the discrepancy the farmer gets for their crops and prices charged. One charge I experienced myself when buy corn for my horses. I was at the feed store/elevator when a farmer brought a huge truckload of shelled corn in. He received $2.02 bushel which was the Suppose to be 52 pounds a bushel but when I bought some of his corn right behind him, I paid $4.85 for a small pick up load which they charge out a bushel at 50 pounds a bushel. This was decades ago but it only got worse over time. Not too long ago, they got less for their wheat than the price of a liaf of bread and 5 cents a pound for their pigs. My neighbor bought 3 and butchered them himself. That doesn't pay for grain, fuel, equipment, fertilizer, weed control, vet bills, taxes, repairs, insurance of any kind or even any food or clothes for them. God bless them for the high gamble they face each year. The little farmer can't complete with the corporate farmers and the big business and foreign owners that are buying up our farm land.

It is also the only job where you only get paid once per year--and you do not know what that pay will be because of "futures", weather, and natural disasters. EVERYONE in the USA needs to know more about farming and ranching so they better appreciate where every grocery item originates, how, and why. My family is in farming, ranching, beef nutrition, and swine nutrition. Thank you for your family's hard work!

I appreciate what you’re saying. I guess I missed what triggered the thought that we talk about rich farmers. The only farmers I’ve really known to be rich are those that are raising Longhorns. That is farm life for you. It doesn't matter if you got herds of Bison or are a wheat or rice farmer. I have seen whole fields of rice that were completely blanks. No actual rice grew that season. Or have perfect rice and hit rain just before harvest and the wetness lays down the entire crop making harvesting really hard. Not to mention the muddy fields with harvesters and bank outs to drive on. Funny how not enough rain or rain at the wrong time. I do miss living out on a 1000-acre ranch. It was so peaceful!

Sad how the people's money has been flowing to other countries by the billions, money that we will never see again that would be better used in developing our existing "super highway" (underground SH) piping system. Out in northern Arizona, we have a SH zoned out from NE to NW and one underground line was used to carry coal slurry to a former power plant in Nevada. The only problem was getting that power plant to set up the water return line with a sand filtration pit, but that plant was decommissioned before the return line could be put in. All I'm saying is, it is doable and a very worthy investment. Our nation is pocked marked with a lot of underground natural storage systems ( I believe southern California uses depleted oil wells to store their natural gas or LPN). We have the technology and know how that for sure.

Dusty, Have you ever used the Bison processing plants in El Reno (owned by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes) or the one in Ottawa County (owned by the Quapaw Nation)? Somehow it seems very special and appropriate--almost spiritual--for Bison to be processed by Native Americans on their lands. I have been thinking that it would be special to name some of your Bison after well-known Oklahoma Native Americans--males and females. I know once you get a big herd it is easier to keep up with numbers. Thank you for sharing all you do! Praying for rain and safety for you all!

Have you thought about once you get your pastor fences shored up tight, about putting a double gate system where you can pull your truck into a small area and then close the gate behind you and then open the second gate to go on into the pasture? That way if you get a bison trying to escape, you will catch him/her in a small pen. They will soon learn that they can't escape completely. Just a thought, I am a designer, so I think these kinds of things out.
