Unhappy with sons' choice of a wife - Mufti Menk

I just wanted to give my own example. My son and daughter both got married with people whom me and my husband disliked. But I have never hated them my daughter has been married for seven years and has children and are Allhamdulliah happy. My son is happy and has children. My son was still studying when he was married no job but Mashalla me and my husband kept on praying for both of them. Now my son in law is one of the biggest business man he didn't even have a job and has no degree. My son has just bought a house the first in his generation and completed his PHD after three years of marriage had a son the same year. Allhamdulliah I just feel blessed and I hope I feel the same way when my other two children are married. I'm not trying to say I'm a good person but sacrificing and being patient has made my family closer and they all respect me. We don't live together either we meet up when we can. Allhamdulliah

My parents hated my choice of woman. She was white, non muslim, she studied Islam and she reverted on her own merit. My parents still did not like her as my choice. She left me because she did not want inlaws who would not accept her. Now I am the most confused person in the world. I have a degree in engineering, I have one of the greatest jobs too. I really hate the Pakistani culture now and realised my parents are old fashioned who put culture before Islam. I follow Islam as best as I can now, I made a decision to move out of the country I was living in and now I am happier alone.

Your parents don't want their grandkids having non Muslim cousins and non Muslim maternal grandparents from your wife's side. It's a reasonable concern. Having such non Muslim influence close to your kids can be a recipe for disaster as they grow

If the kids become non Muslim due to influence from the wife's family, it will be the children's farther who will be held accountable on the day of judgement, not the grandparents. But still, nobidy wants their grandkids mingling and staying at homes where there's no Islam, it's a legitimate concern and I can understand the parents refusal. I wish my parents are like you. I including all my family members suffering the chaos since 2007, but it didn’t open my parents hearts. Since 2007 every single we (especially my parents are losing blessings of their lives). There wouldn’t have so much chaos if they were like you. All issues started from 2007 when i reached marriageable age and wanted to marry outside my ethnicity. My parents clearly refused and since than there was looooooooots of chaos that im still not married (neither I could marry someone of their choice nor of my choice) because of the chaos and problems we are facing every day. I would love someone’s advice. I have found someone I intend to get married. She is older and has been divorced. I am 23 and she is 26. I told my father and he said he was fine with it and that her past is her past however after doing some research he found that he struggled with mental health issues due to her previous marriage however alhamdullilah she has gotten better due to therapy and time. He has changed his mind due to the fact she has had mental health issues. I do not want to go against my father but I want him to understand my choice and not to let that factor change his mind.

Same thing happened to me. The boy's mother came to see me all the way from another country with the intention of engagement, when they came to see me, he loved me at first sight but his mother left the house early and asked his son that she will never accept me. She already saw me in photos, she spoke to me on the phone, but after meeting me, she just changed her mind especially when she saw how much her son loved me. She panicked and asked him to choose between me or her. Ofcourse he chose his mother. I'm so heartbroken because of how they promised to marry him to me and next second they rejected me for superficial reasons. May Allah guide them.

a big reason why most parents are afraid to let their child choose who they want to marry as it might hurt their reputation or culture. I as a young male am looking to marry a girl who has become an angel since I met her, she keeps shining and I would love to go to her parents for her hand, however, my parents on the other hand are extremely against it to the point where I have been disowned and ignored. Exactly. Some couples have kids too early and then it just becomes a situation where they won't leave each other and stay for the sake of that kid basically, even though they know that they are very incompatible. Also, they may not want to get divorced cuz of the stigma around it. This sort of relationship just ends up being toxic and it just drags on.

Sister, your obedience is to your husband, not parents. When a woman marries she is not obligated to obey her parents because the prophet, pbuh, says, pleasing the husband is pleasing Allah. Your husband is your door to jannah, not parents

Salaam alaikum mufti...if a son wants to marry a girl of not good character (parents came to know through the other girls who saw her intermingling with boys and accepting gifts from random so called boyfriends) and her parents are arrogant and supports their daughter who is of no good nature nor of character still the son marries this girl secretly and told parents...later parents accepted her and forgave their son but she is haughty and does not try to win her in-laws love instead tries to create rift between son and in-laws including sister-in-laws ...the mother-in-law works cooks cleans and the daughter-in-law doesn't help her nor cooks or cleans and just busy complaining her husband... what do you say about these kind of unique girls? Not all in-laws are bad...there are daughter in-laws who are shrewd , manipulating and playing tactics and being ungrateful for having good understanding in-laws who don't ask her to take care of them ever....she even doesn't respect or entertain guests with tea or coffee....the mother-in-law makes and brings tea or entertains guests ..she has the habit of eaves dropping every time parents or sisters talk to her husband or with themselves.. ...please do shed some light on this matter...
