And he is correct when he says that even that isn't enough time to really get a grasp on the mechanics. This is likely due to the fact that the game does get more complex as it goes on, introducing more classes, tactics, upgrades, and characters. I really didn't start messing with the full depth of the mechanics until mid-game, about 25 hours into the game.

VanillaWare is a studio that somehow defies the cutthroat nature of the current game industry. They keep going bankrupt on passion projects which despite clearly being not up to their intended vision, still are extraordinary in terms of how much they throw into them… Like, the number of unique classes with distinct sprites is nuts no matter the “how many were cut” thing. Or having a world map so big that it sells this being a breathing world of scope and scale (in this, not actually traversing towns themselves is to its benefit honestly). I have nitpicks but nothing too critical ultimately; I can’t imagine how they made this thing.

I'm a big fan of Tactics Ogre and Ogre Battle, games with very deep mechanics and meta game, and I'm still feel overwhelmed with all the possibilities that Unicorn Overlord offers. Optimizing your units is a game on its own. But 40+ hours in, and I'm loving it so much.

Wait, you played without changing the tactics? That's half the fun of the game! Definitely agree on the story, it's not really a game you play for the story. It's serviceable, it does the job of being a vessel for the gameplay to give you a reason to be fighting but that's about it. But the depth of putting together different unit compositions, ensuring your skills are set up so that the correct one gets used in the correct situation, and getting more advanced setting up combos where one skill triggers a chain reaction of passive skills is IMO where the game really shines.

Just got this on Amazon on PS5 for 40 this morning. I would wait but the demo was amazing and I don't want to wait lol.

At first after getting the demo, I wasn't too fond of the gameplay. I feel like that prologue level really doesn't do the systems justice. It felt overwhelming at first. However, the more and more I played and messed around with the tactics and equipment of the characters, the more fun I started having. setting up your units to respond with certain criteria is such a rewarding experience. The story felt pretty cookie-cutter, and Alain is a pretty boring and generic protagonist, but overall, the game was an amazing experience, and I am hoping we get more like it in the future.

Is the difficulty well balanced? Are there any unexpected difficulty spikes or anything?
@TillerBric6 ай бұрын
I did pretty much all of the side mission content, never really felt like there was a difficulty spike. I generally felt like things were well balanced but keep in mind I also did not use every tool the game gave me, so it might be easier than what I experienced.
@PragmaticAntithesis6 ай бұрын
It depends on the difficulty modes. Expert is pretty well balanced as long as you aren't cheesing, but the lower difficulties have more variance.

Kinda a difficulty spike with the last boss

The hardest difficulty is perfect for a nice relaxing tactical rpg switch experience, but not like braindead easy.
@Bolderox6 ай бұрын
depends on the scenario. Like I won't spoil, but the boss of the first real story mission (the cutoff of the demo from my experience) is a huge spike unless you understand some of the things the game has. But the game is fairly forgiving on normal difficulty. There is no perma death (unlocked after beating the game) so do not be afraid to experiment.

Basically this game is Ogre Battle if made today.

Shame no plans for a PC release. I'll have to emulate it when I have the time.

what was the issue with localization people are talking about? is it that egregious?
@TillerBric6 ай бұрын
A vocal minority mad the game isn't just a 1:1 translation. It is not egregious, and imo is a non-issue There was a small group of people or maybe just one person who was mad because the localized dialogue was not a barebones 1:1 translation and instead added some flair to make the dialogue fit the setting. Imo, it's a non-issue. I can't really explain it in good detail since Im not going to go back and find the Twitter thread, but it truly doesn't change a thing about the game's quality. Given the setting, putting the dialogue into a mix of old english and whatnot didn't do anything to worsen the experience and it still makes sense to do so as it is not only a localizers job to translate but to adapt. It's like how you can't translate puns from one language (most of the time) to another, so you sometimes have to make up a new related joke.

@@TillerBric From what I understand some of the fallout was because certain gameplay text was horribly translated and would possibly cause people to misunderstand what something will do. I think a patch fixed these issues but yeah.

Funny enough,this is one of the better localization made in decades. The only line that took me out is an NPC suggesting Elf on Dark Elf racism is a thing. Which anyone who know Elves is that they are dicks to EVERYONE.

Demo barely grazes the content and the characters unlocked....especially items it basically changes characters behavior at combat
