So, you might not realize, but the intro cutscene and tutorial mission on the island are almost EXACTLY a one-to-one recreation of the plot and first mission of the very first Fire Emblem game from all the way on the NES. The game very deliberately wears its influences in the open.

Man, the upcoming podcast conversation about this game is gonna be something else considering that this game is peak Vanillaware: - The development of the game caused the devs to almost bankrupt the studio. - It has been on development for a absurd amount of time. - There's a lot of fighting game references hidden in it (like how the witches are basically Morigan from Darkstalkers). It feels like Woolie just hates tutorials when he's trying to race the tutorial in getting the information before it's given for... no reason? So he can misunderstand things down the line? Like just relax and trust that the game devs put in a lot of time working on a tutorial to help you understand things bit by bit not flood yourself with everything to get confused later.

Every Fire Emblem game is very much its own beast, and in Three Houses case, that led to its gameplay being kinda ass. This game has a lot of FE influence in it, and can definitely stand toe to toe with the best that series has to offer, as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for being a real one, good netizen. It's sad to think about directly, but props for being the only commenter here honest enough to say it like it is. In six months, everyone is going to have moved on, for better or for worse. Folks will mention this game not getting a PC port again during the Geoff Keely awards when it gets a nomination and no award wins, but never again thereafter. Every other PC-only in this comment section is literally up their own ass with self-importance trying to be passed off as righteous indignation with their port begging. Yet, a vast majority of them wouldn't actually buy Unicorn Overlord, much less anything Vanillaware, even if it was out on PC right now. All that I hear is "I totally would, trust me bro. The week-early leaked version is right over there and the streammonsters in the podcast chat are telling me it's almost amoral NOT to pirate it, but trust me bro - I'd totally buy it." I would love to be wrong. I'd love to see data that would prove that the glorious PC master-race would show up for nice port down the line. But I don't believe "I totally would, trust me bro." There is no hype for 'a game that has been out for six months somewhere else' unless that somewhere is literally the Epic Games Store (like Hades) - which is a WIDLY different scenario than the one at hand. (U.O. being on every current console, but not PC.) Yeah, I get it, Vanillaware could move some more digital stock (and make some money), and for the few edge-cases out there who actually can't play it on anything but a settop computer, they'd get a chance to play a really nice game. But those are probably a vocal minority of commenters and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.

That's where I was at, but the game does have a Story-Mode difficulty. There's also a setting that automatically paused the game at the start of the battle, so you can get your bearings and take a look at everything. It's very beginner-friendly!

I unironically laughed at the "The heavens will surely be on the side of justice" Like bruh. Your mother was at the apex of Cornia's ability to resist the formation of the empire. It reminds me of Viserys Targaryen to Danny. About how surely everyone will just join the cause and restore Cornia. One thing I want from this game is I want the story to be way more grounded and that Josef really did some serious political legwork to not only form the liberation army. But all occupied territories to openly rebel across the empire at the same time. So when the liberation army starts gaining forces. It makes sense they aren't just stomped out with end game bosses. Because everyone else everywhere is helping out and dividing their attention. Otherwise it just makes no sense.

For anyone who has spent a decent amount of time with this game, are the enemy encounters random? As in, is the unit composition static for the enemy, or is it randomly generated from a pool? My main concern is that if the unit composition is static, then the game can be "solved", leading to a stale metagame approach.

It is static, just like literally every other srpg like it. It may be different on higher difficulties though I'm not sure.

It's static. There's so many different abilities going off in battle though that the slightest change in rng (moves can crit or be evaded) can lead to massively different outcomes. You have to understand too that this isn't fire emblem where it's 1v1 where a unit just has an insurmountable advantage over another. This has formations, so while units are designed to hard counter other types, the other units in that formation might cover them. Besides which, "solving" how to fight enemies IS the fun of this game. It honestly feels more like a programming game than a strategy game. I guess you could just look up a guide, but if you did that you don't have a right to complain about lack of difficulty. Honestly, just try the demo, it's extremely generous and properly representative of the full game.

Although its static they do add several new classes in every kingdom. Youll probably "solve" the game by just getting overpowered and loading one or 2 parties with your best gear. But if you play around with everything and use more units you wont have that issue as much. What kind of strategy game is random anyways?

The early stuff in Cornia is easy. It has difficulty spikes assuming you don't go massively off the beaten path or abuse the exp boosting order. Definitely only play on the hardest difficulty though.
