UniFi Ad Blocking: Is it BETTER than Pi-hole? (setup / comparison)

I'll be clear that I still don't like that domains are whitelisted/blacklisted in the UniFi Firewall. It makes sense in the grand scheme of things, but prefer the way Pi-hole does it. Overall, Pi-hole will still be the better choice if you're willing to implement it, but if you just want a quick way to block generic ads, UniFi Ad Blocking is a great choice.

People invest big buck into UniFi hardware, because they want it simple and they don't have time/need/will to learn things. UniFi Ad blocking is a quick simple way to block ads, because you already have the hardware. Deploying Pi-hole is also quick and simple but only if you have invested into the knowledge before.

This video has convinced me to deploy Pi-Hole. I've had Unifi's ad blocker on for a while and haven't noticed much of a difference. It lets a lot in.

You're videos are always among the best when you try to understand something. I am runing Unbound and Nginx reverse proxy - learnt from you. Making and correcting mistakes this way - that is how it really works from time to time for most of us.

I still run pihole cause as far I can find unifi still doesn't support adding CNAMEs for A records in their DNS. If unifi ever gets basic DNS features in place I might consider it but if I have to run pihole anyway I'll leave the ad-blocking to the better ad-blocker.

Adguard with customized block lists on my router + multiple PiHoles + OrbitalSync + KeepAlived. Free as in beer and basically hands-off. Along with UBlock on my family's machines means we're ad and tracker free and all FOSS.

Well this is unusual. Such a speedy apology and redemption for a mistake you made. I will watch this one to the end. I use Unifi as blocking in most setups I do and at home so this is interesting!

I stressed how important it is to have a query log and how Pi-hole excels in that area, and it undermined the UniFi ad blocker. I didn't feel like it was fair to keep it up which is why I removed it, but wanted a quick replacement for the people who possibly saw that video. Either way, thank you for watching!
