Today, I have learnt how to separate the voice network from the rest. Thanks willie

802.1p (dot1p) leverages the 3-bit 'Priority Code Point' (PCP) field of an 802.1q (VLAN) tag on an Ethernet Frame. The value in this field is a Class of Service (CoS) Marking which can be used for QoS at Layer 2. The binary values in this field are synonymous with the "IP Precedence" values in the ToS Byte of an IP Packet. For example: a CoS value of 101 (which is "5" in decimal) inside the "Priority" field, would be mapped to it's counterpart on an IP Packet when it reaches a Router. It would get a DSCP marking of 101 110 (46), which is typically used for Expedited Forwarding. These markings (CoS 5 and DSCP 46) are typically used to give VoIP traffic the highest priority and lowest latency when traversing a network. Fun Facts: An 802.1q (dot1q) tag is 32 bits (4 Bytes) in length and is made up of 4 parts: a 16-bit 'Tag Protocol Identifier' field (a value of 0x8100 signifies that the frame is tagged using 802.1q), a 3-bit 'Priority' field (for the CoS Markings), a 1-bit 'Drop Eligible Indicator' or 'DEI' field (to indicate whether the frame can be dropped during times of congestion, similar to the 'Explicit Congestion Notification' or 'ECN' field in an IP Packet) and finally the actual 'VLAN ID' field (which carries the numerical value of the VLAN in hexadecimal). :)

Good video , i have a USG 4 Pro , am thinking of migrating to dream machine pro, but QOS settings are a little bit hidden and should be visible at the controller. a also have lots of other things in a gateway file like custom multiple ddns, open vpn, not possible in the controller that's not good at all , all the feature should be made conttrollable in the UBNT controller, i wil check if the UDM have more possibilities.

I've been looking into the Unifi Gen 2 POE Pro 48 port for a small campus network with 15+ VoIP phones and up to 1200 active WiFi users at a time. I find this Unifi 'QOS' very misleading and lacking from standard DSCP and COS on real enterprise switches. I'm surprised not to see more concerns about these switches online. They would be a great switch if not for the QOS and VLAN configuration limitations. It's scary to me thinking of deploying these anywhere but in small office/home office situations. Has anyone deployed these as stacked switches to 100-1000 user networks with VoIP and have you had any issues?

@Willie Howe. I’m not seeing WAN section under config on my USG (1:18). Also I noticed that I see WAN and LAN under networks when I created my networks and VLANs from from “Best Practices l”. Also did not have and admin tab under events from “Best Practices I”. Am I doing something wrong?

In a whisk set up using mainly edge max gear would you set up only one network for multiple different customers voiceover IP or should you set up each one to have its own separate network ?

Hi Willie and thanks for the video. I wanted to ask you one thing: if I imposed in the controller "Enable periodic speed test every XX", the value that will be inserted in the SmartQueue change automatically according to the speed test of the moment? Also doing the speed test could slow down the system? Thank you

Would this apply to consumer grade Voip like ooma or something similar? Also can you set the voice network to use lan2 on the usg or does it need to go through a switch

I have watched yours videos and as a result purchased 2 UI AP Pro They claim to have some really good speed but I not getting they documented speed. Do you feel they measure up to there claims ??? in getting about 1/ 10 the documented speeds ( I found there support less then helpful ) Help & suggestion would be awesome :)

Noob question, i am in the process of deploying some unifi equipment around the home, which consists of a cloud key, USG, AC lite and NVR with 4 camera's. (Netgear 24 port switch). Should the NVR show up in the cloud key contoller like the AP does? I can see the video over 4g connection when away from home. When setting this gear up should you use the one password for all the unifi gear given they all have different alias's and mac adresses or should every peice have a unique password?

If you had multiple VLANS would you select them in the tagged network section of the port profile also? If you did and you select that profile on the port how does the switch know what VLAN to assign to the device? If you do it this way do you have to manual enter the vlans on the phones? If that makes sense.. Little confused on the port profile and selecting those vlans.

I thought the same thing. Why mess with the port at all? If you add vlan 2 in the phone configuration and reboot, it's going to be on the VOIP vlan 2 and the voip subnet. And the computer would still grab an IP from the native corporate subnet even when passing through the phone.

good afternoon!, can i put some kind of package priority for voip straight into unifi ap pro, without having a sw from unifi to manage such traffic. I use edge mikrotik with QoS and packet prioritization

Think Im confusing myself here, seem to get more confused the more I read ha. All I want to do is give my VoIP VLAN a dedicated amount of bandwidth. Why do usergroups only work on wireless networks? I dont really want to use Smart Queue but the CLI approach makes me nervous ha. Surely there's a straight forward way to achieve this?
@KrisPodgeHepworth6 жыл бұрын
So setting the bandwidth for a specific VLAN on the USG has to be done over CLI and needs a JSON file? This scares me haha, I better do some reading. Thanks for the knowledge.

Hello Willie, thank you for your video. I have configured the system on a glasfiber modem port 1 is the trunk. Port 2 is vlan6 internet connected to the Wan of the Usg. Port 3 is connected to the LAN of my usg and has the LAN and the guest vpn. Port 4 is connected to the ITv (vlan4) port 5,6,7,8 are the network ports (lan/guest vlan) I have activated smart QOS. Can you advise me? What does the smart QOS do to port 1,2,3,4,? And do you advise my to use the voip setting for vlan6 and vlan4? Thank you. Greetings from the Netherlands!

Can you make smart que for an isolated network? That would be useful. Like a guest net. I want everyone on that net to have fair bandwidth. But on other nets I want to have the devices decide.
@ChrisHolzer6 жыл бұрын
Small issue. The USG has a very poor CPU (like the ERLite). As a result using SmartQueue (FQ_Codel) will hit the CPU of the USG so hard that it becomes a bottleneck for your throughput and so you end up with a max of 60Mbps downstream. For your connection you should use an ERX which has a much more powerful CPU that can do ~120MBPS with SmartQueue on. See the EdgeOS manual which has a SmartQueue bandwidth chart for the various Edge Routers. In EdgeOS you can enable SmartQueue in just one direction if you want to. Btw. IIRC in Unifi you must enter bandwidth values that are 10% lower than your actual bandwidth, in EdgeOS this isnt required.

That’s pretty poor QOS, so you have no manual control over it at all? Your relying on the software doing its job.
