The piece you install inside the chime location is a capacitor to ensure when you ring the chime the device doesn't lose power.

I don't think so. It's just a way to ensure that the device can draw operating power without sending too much through the chime and causing it to buzz, go off randomly, etc. Doorbells are designed to cut off the power except for the quarter second you press them; cameras need power at all times.

That extra white pack for the Door is to help keep the doorbell powered up. A a normal push button is just a button, when you push the button in you close the loop, and that turns on the bell to make it ring. The White pack is digital power pack to keep new unifi doorbell power up all the time.When you push the new doorbell it will change the voltage for the crime to ring.

It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).

I managed to get one of these a couple of weeks ago. It’s worth noting that many homes don’t have a big enough doorbell transformer to handle the chime and camera. I had to go from a 10A to a 30A transformer. Now the chime and doorbell work great.

Miller, did you have to upgrade your chimebox to a 16v 30av?? Did you have to use that extra part that you had to connect the two wires and small box (I think to upgrade power) in the chimebox ? I currently have a RingDoorbell and have a transformer and chimebox 16v 10 av, I want to get the newest G4 doorbell and was thinking I should probably upgrade both the transformer and chimebox to 16v 30av --- your thoughts?

@@jimholloway1785 All the doorbells I’ve installed this on were all 16VAC chimes. So just removing the 10A transformer in favor of a 30A does the trick.

That "extra" piece is required for a digital doorbell (so I have read), otherwise the indoor chime may not function properly. When I installed mine with an analog chime box, I heard this weird buzzing noise coming from the box until I added that piece.

Yup this allows your UVC Doorbell to draw power from the transformer without going through the solenoid coil in your chime box.

Odds are it is a Jacuzzi tub in a bathroom. It is only a 20A 120V circuit. So it isn't powering a big hot tub.

I just installed mine last night. I have an older home (built 60's). I couldn't get mine to power on at all, unless I pressed the back-door doorbell button. So I ended up having to remove and permanently close the back door button circuit (no need for a backdoor doorbell anyway). I then had to replace my transformer (I could only find 24v/20va, but it seems to work perfectly fine). One small feature that I really like is the security motion light. You can set its sensitivity, and it turns on a "foot" light that is very bright. The night light version works amazingly well. I have yet to test a doorbell strike.

Great vid Chris, recently had Nest doorbell installed at my mothers house as she's elderly and I wanted to give her some ability to turn cold callers away without feeling threatened in a face to face environment. One drawback of Nest is that it requires a subscription to record footage to the cloud which is disappointing, and the notifications for the doorbell on her phone can take up to 5-10 minutes if she's out of the house (which obviously means she's missed out on a possible delivery). Needless to say that feature is useless when away. I love the fact this requires no subscription to capture footage, but looking forward to the follow up "verdict" video - I'm hoping that you can incorporate some sort of information relating to whether the doorbell press is reported to your phone in realtime when you're away from the property. I had to upgrade the transformer for my doorbell. I think this is partly why they are going to be selling an approved one in the store. I have an analog doorbell that under the covers looked the same as yours. Before upgrading the transformer the button would not have enough power to ring the doorbell inside the house and the camera kept powering off. I am also going to have to move one of my APs as the wifi range of the doorbell is a bit disappointing. I have one about 20' away (UAP-AC-Pro) but it always complains about poor signal. The only wall the signal needs to go though is the exterior wall. With the transformer upgraded it seems to work pretty good overall and I have had it running for about 3 weeks. We are going to get a second one for the back door. Another tip those clips that you struggled with, you should skip them if you are not using the angling bracket as there isn't enough room for them. Just bend the end of the wire in a hook and put them on the screws direct. I used them because I used the angling bracket.

I was hoping they would come out with a doorbell. I only have one other camera on my UniFi Protect system. We bought the Eufy doorbell about 5 months ago and have been really happy with it. No subscription fees. Install is very similar. One thing I would like to see with the UniFi version is a stand alone app just for the Doorbell. My wife doesn't want to be burdened with the other cameras in the system, she just wants to quickly respond to the doorbell. I'm going to keep my eyes on the development of this one though, and may change it out at some point if they show some more progress on it.

3:50 -- IPX Water resistance is a matter of PRESSURE. No amount of rain is going to affect ipx4, it would take a pressure washer to create enough (i.e. look at ipx5) or total submersion, but then you have other issues.

Just ordered and received mine today, Unify was sold out but ordered it from Amazon and they had it available, received it in 2 days. Got some other Unify equipment for my home network but that's a different show. I have a ZModo doorbell that is ok but poor video quality and I've had it for about 4 years now, time to upgrade. At the door what one has is actually a switch that closes the circuit for the chime box to work. That extra pice turns one of the cables into a "live" wire, meaning a wire with electrical power.

I'm fairly sure that doorbells are low voltage AC, which is why it doesn't matter which way the wires are connected. Common ones seem to be 8V, 16V, 24V. From my experience installing a doorbell recently.

Hi Chris i've just has a quick look through the comments and not found any answers as to what the little box used for on the internal bell unit. The bell system is likely to use 12v ac and would be connected to the mains via a transformer. My best guess would be that it is some sort of transient suppression or something to prevent back EMF. Back EMF is caused by applying current to a coil or inductor, and causes a very high voltage spike to travel down the wiring just after the current has been removed. It is as a result of the collapsing magnetic field acting on the coil that produced the magnetic field in the first place. Hope that helps. Lucy

You need to move the plant or create a privacy zone so that it ignores the motion of the plant and the rest of the bushes. Otherwise you will get constant motion alerts on windy days like this was.

I have used Ring Pro's for a long time and while this software is not as feature rich, to me the best benefit is having all of my surveillance in one program together. Well worth the move to the G4 Doorbell... The features they have for now are fine for me and I am sure they will get better. Do hope to see a different notification sound choice as noted by others. Great product as expected from Ubiquiti!

Pretty sure the little box is like a capacitor. When you press the doorbell and the chime triggers it prevents power from being lost to the doorbell. Ever notice when you press the button on a regular doorbell if it has a light on it? Notice the light goes off when pressed. Same thing when you press the doorbell it completes the circuit and power is lost to the button while pressed.

Thanks for the video and a look at your new house outside! I think I preferred your old 'Sherwood Forest' with the bears. :) I'm planning to replace my Nest Doorbell with this. Primarily because the video looks a lot sharper and better. The Nest doorbell video is hopelessly compressed even at the highest setting and anything far away is a blurry mess. I believe the doorbell voltage is alternating current (around 18V), so there're no polarities on the connection and can be connected whichever way. I'm currently using a 18Vac adapter with my Nest Doorbell on an outside side gate, and hope to test it with this doorbell once I can order it. I also like the mini display and the fact that you can turn off the status light (like other Protect cameras). I hated the Nest Cam and Doorbell feature where they recently disallowed turning off the status light (used to be able to). I think it's because of some privacy issue, but when placed outside, even this faintest light draws insects which means spider webs soon appear and partially mess up the view!

I think that little box wiring in chime is Fancy Diode nothing more than to have the continuous current flowing to Chime and the video doorbell, if you don't have that in typical wiring you might wound up holding down the button to have it going continuous if you remember in old days if you press it goes and release to stop

If you're like me and using the 20 degree mount adapter on clapboard siding (or anything else that'd point the camera up instead of out) I designed a 3D printable adapter (thing:4637067) to tilt the camera 4 degrees forward to bring the camera back to vertical.

Chris, not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but I think you would have been better off installing the wedge that came with the camera. When the UPS guy delivered your package it was quite large but due to the angle of the camera it disappeared when he put it down. I have a similar doorbell and use the wedge to see everything in front of the door. Bob

for the power supply you can buy a plug in power supply and wire it in. i have use 24vac alarm panel power supplies for nest and ring when there is no original doorbell, (new construction).

To my knowledge the "chime" piece is a resistor of some kind. It is needed to ring your door bell or you when you ring the bell it will cause a power drop and could cause the door bell to stop working

The doorbell runs off ~16 - 24V AC, so with AC there is no polarity -its in the name. Thus, the terminals on the back of the doorbell are both the same colour. Doorbell circuits have always been ~24V AC.

You can install the doorbell directly to the red and white power wires without using those separate white connections. My doorbell wiring hole wasn't big enough for them to fit, so that's what I ended up doing. Been working just fine for the month+ I've had it.

The way traditional doorbell wiring works is kind of strange. the light inside the button is in PARALLEL with the switch, and therefor the solenoid inside the chime is always energized, however not energised enough. when you push the button, it take the resistance to near zero and the solenoid hits the chime plate making a sound. the reason the video doorbells need special install steps is that they allow MORE power to goto the solenoid since they are allowing MORE power to pass through them when compared to the high resistance of the button lamp, Hence the AC HUM. The ring has a great feature of a wifi electronic sound maker for inside the house. therefor you can bypass the traditional one completely and just strait wire the doorbell to the transformer. I really do wish that Ubiquiti would make a second version that is PoE to get it off the wifi and solve the power issue altogether. Ring did this for the PRO model and it is a beast. Anyways, Chris, how is it a year later? Ever solve the low audio issue? oh yeah, since everyone else is doing it I am ALSO an electrician of 30 years. 😉

That box in the chimebox I believe is to bypass the Chime if ever you want to mute the chimebox and only receive push notification.

I’m in the U.K. so we have to wait a while before new Ubiquiti/UniFi kit hits. What I would like is for this doorbell (or for UniFi protect) a door/gate strike as a feature. Both for the the kit itself to incorporate it but also an ‘unlock’ features from within the protect app. I know there is the ‘UniFi Access’ platform apparently coming, but in its absence, if protect could offer this, it would be a huge seller.

The white box may also be used to turn off the door chime. I know that is required for the Nest doorbell to turn off the chime.

They need to produce an indoor chime, here in the U.K. they will probably end up following the Ring model and provide a transformer to drop the voltage down as U.K. doorbells run at a different voltage to US ones, this means you end up stripping out the chime a lot of the time because the chime is the ideal location to put the transformer.

You didn’t need to put the “clips” on the wires outside. You can simply wrap the copper wire from your original wiring around the screw on the doorbell. The clips are typically used inside your doorbell chime inside your house to go on the posts of your bell.

Darren Lobb the market for a poe doorbell would be fairly small because most people won’t have Ethernet cable running to their doorbell unless they’re lucky, and looking at mine trying to pull it through using the existing wire would more likely end up in a snapped doorbell wire and more issues. Plus has they included the option it would have pushed the price up for what is already a fairy top end priced doorbell when compared to the likes of Nest and Ring

Installed this in my home built in the early 70’s. I had to upgrade the transformer. Camera worked but not enough juice to power the camera and ring the doorbell at same time.

The hardware looks very much like the Eufy doorbell from Anker. They likely use the same manufacturer which is why it isn’t POE. The jumper in the Ubiquiti version is much more robust, and the Eufy has a black bracket instead of white.

Mine are labeled "GFI" Aaaand they're not even GFI outlets 😂 I bought a tool at home Depot similar to a network toner, you plug a transmitter into a plug\light socket\clipped to wires, and point a receiver at a breaker and it beeps when it's on the correct one. Will be amazing helping map everything out.

I’m in the same boat but this does not have person detection, like Ring, so that would be a huge loss. I do like the idea of having unlimited recording but Unify Protect’s lack of person detection is a major hole in their game.

I have a Gen 2 Cloud Key; however, it states on Ubiquiti's website that an NVR or Dream Machine are required for this product. I though the Gen 2 Cloud Key was also a Protect controller?

On doorbells everything is AC. 24 -16 VAC. We installed a dedicated doorbell transformer at the door via a wall mount box on the interior of the house right behind our Ring Pro Doorbell. I plan on using the same transformer for the G4-DoorBell. Then you would need that boost unit at the chime. That does bring up a question. The ring has a dedicated Chime Wifi box that plays the chime. It is triggered when the button on the doorbell is pressed. And you can have multiple of them so you can hear the chime in different parts of the house. Does Protect has such a feature?

I have a nest outdoor cam that my father in law bought but I also use Ubiquiti devices for my APs, so the possibility of switching to a Ubiquiti device for my security cams sounds like a positive for me, and as others have mentioned, getting rid of a monthly fee would be nice. I may have to see about getting one of these.

I installed mine just a few days ago... had issues with the Apple UniFi Protect app finding my controller but did some port forwarding and it is working. Wasn't getting alerts but I believe I fixed that. The Chime seems to work... I need to take another look as the wires may be blocking the chime striker. I haven't gotten my led light at the bottom to work yet. Ubuiquti responded to my support ticket and said it might be an issue with the voltage. I guess it needs up to 30 volts to power that little light. Still looking in to that. I am impressed with the picture quality as well. Nice review Chris!.. I too struggled with figuring out which breaker to throw. :-)

I have only gotten my bottom light to work if it is pitch black outside. If the porch lights are on it will not illuminate. I’m still trying to figure it out myself, this is just my current observation.

They mean a transformer that can supply 30VA not volts. Doorbell transformers are usually 16v, sometimes 24v. The G4 doorbell supports 16-24VAC and requires at least 20VA.

Your test doorbell presses at install time did not generate events due to a bug. I've found that if you are actively viewing the feed via the phone app when the button is pressed, it will not record the motion event.

Protect on the phone is great, but i would like to see something of a live ongoing monitor display for protect without having to invest in another monitor, TV etc...

So far my go to doorbell. I'm not ever going to try to count how many of the smart doorbells I've installed for my customers. I've done cheap doorbells and of course lots of ring. I often refer my customers to your videos if they want to get a better understanding of the UniFi system. The only issue I've had was with the talk function. During setup your asked to allow a few things, geo fencing , allow microphone and some other stuff. My customer didn't allow and the talk didn't work. I'd like it if you could cover those features. BTW I've never seen a cat6 at the doorbell location. As for mag lock control the PoE Unifi Door Access would be perfect.

The field of view doesn’t appear to allow viewing of the package that UPS placed at the door. Is there a setting to change to get a view that allowed the showing of the package or packages at the door? Maybe the angle mount would have helped.

I have a google nest doorbell with a subscription included for 6 months. I appreciate that it shows up on the Google home screen when someone rings the doorbell. It's for my parents who are older and rarely use their phones. I have the Google Nest Home screens in their bedroom and family so they can see who is at the door. I wish there was a similar integration with my google home screen from Ubiquiti. Currently I have 2 camera's at my house from Ubiquiti and wish I could connect the rtsp feeds it to my google home by saying "Google, connect to Camera xxx." So far the only option I found is to stream it from another app like VLC. If I pay 2 years of the google stream (depending on the plan) it is the same price as this doorbell. I hope there is an integration of some sort in the future.

What notification do you get of the doorbell being rung if you don't have it hooked to a chime box? Just the phone notification? Can it connect to something else to make a doorbell sound in the house or announcement of some kind? Also would love to see those RTSP capabilities in action. I really like the 24/7 recording and the video looked nice but I don't carry my phone around in the house all day. I need it to work with generic systems in place via RTSP capably. I mean it's great it says it on the tin but how well does that part actually function?

This would be the deal breaker for me tbh. I’m in a new house which did not come with a doorbell (Go figure🤷‍♂️) I’m heavily invested in the Ring eco system, but I’m running a Ubiquity network and have a single G3 camera covering the driveway, as well as a Gen2 Cloud Controller. So I have the v3 Ring Doorbell, and a couple of the plug-in ringers which is perfect as I often have family staying, so they can answer the door when needed. Without any externally connected chime device, or ability to send an alert via SmartThings to my Sonus speakers or Alexa, this doorbell makes no sense, unless I give everyone who stays, access to it via the App......using my account credentials, which ain’t going to happen 🤷‍♂️

If it has a power adapter, that allows it to compete with Google Nest Hello Doorbell, as it has a supported 3rd party power adapter that allows you to use it without having an existing doorbell system in your home. It's what allowed me to install my Google Nest Hello Doorbell, as my current home does not have a doorbell at all. Can't wait to hear your full review on it. I don't pay for Nest Aware, so I'm hoping that maybe this doorbell w/ adapter may be a solution for me so I don't have to pay a monthly fee for my video! Thanks for the video. Chris, i am a huge fan of your videos and a fan of unifi gear. Just wanted to know if you know of a way to integrate this with a display/tablet so when someone press the doorbell it will automatically show on a screen. Just like a echo show or nest hub shows their own video feed from a doorbell automatically.

Installations are very similar to a typical Ring Door Bell including the "Pro Power Kit" that also comes with Ring devices. How do you compare the quality, user interface, responsiveness, video recording between UniFi versus Ring doorbell?

I wonder why they didn’t come up (yet) with a poe powered doorbell. This would definitely increase reliability, since people don’t always have a strong wifi signal near the front door. It would also prevent bandwidth problems for the AP to which the doorbell is connected.

We're looking at installing one of these, but the current doorbell there is completely wireless so we will have to run it with the power supply.

Ring do have a seperate power supply now. I had to purchase it because I was sick of having to charge the doorbell every month. And I had most of the features disabled so I could get more days out of it. I would rather have this g4 doorbell so I don’t have to pay the subscription fees

A separate power supply is nice but will they have a separate wireless chime, as Ring does? Not good if you only rely on the phone app to notify you that someone rang the doorbell.

Would love to see if you can read a license plate on a vehicle in your culdesac and know if you could adjust the speaker volume on the doorbell itself.

Those wiring quick connectors are meant to make installation easier by extending the length of the wire. In your case it would have been a lot simpler to just wire it up directly without them.

Hi Chris! Thanks for the video. This looks like a neat device to have at home! I have a question on this guy, not sure if you've thought about it and I'm almost positive that it'll work. Is this camera able to be added as a camera on the Viewport? It defiantly would be a nice view to have while keeping an eye around the house. Thank you!

Currently looking at conversion of house to unifi network system including cameras. I would want to upgrade current doorbell which is battery powered pushbutton only then via bluetooth to chimer in the house then poe would be preferable for supply power plus bonus of better data feed through multiple layers of brick (including internal walls) Prob need another ap in network design. In Aust. would need a lic elect to install power from meter box or branch from junction box from gp outlet run to the device to be a legal install.

Hi Bruce Miller, you definitely should upgrade to a Unifi system, Nip down to Jaycar and grab a 24vac power brick, pop a tiny hole through the wall and plug it in, job done, mine connects to my Unifi APpro around 15mtrs away through 2 stud walls and then external brick, perfect.

@@coltimm thanks nearest gp outlet for 24Vac power adaptor is not within a suitable distance circa 10 mtrs including vertical height. As no GP outlet within reach within hallway power route will also be through internal brick walls (no stud walls in house, all fastwall brick with wet render plaster (no plaster board), typical in West Aus) so not a simple task of punch a hole etc. PoE is only DC voltage. Looks like a sparky is required to setup a GP point nearby door. Will now look at PoE camera somehow set up trigger events and use current simple battery doorbell for sound.

I don't turn off circult breaker for doorbell. Since it's really low voltage. Quite time consuming

Will the G4 Doorbell integrate with the Unifi Talk? For example the door bell is pressed the unifi phone touch can view and talk to the front door and prompt the unifi access to release a door strike?

Those "wiring nubs" are not needed on the doorbell, just attach the wires directly.

I currently have a Ring Doorbell Elite and would gladly switch to a UniFi “Doorbell Pro” if WiFi was removed and it would run off an Ethernet PoE connection. The connection time to live video when away from home is nearly instant with the Ring Elite vs. Ring Doorbell Pro because of the wired connection. It also mounts inside the exterior wall so it’s nearly flush for a more pleasing aesthetic.

So the specs say temperature range from - 10 to 40c only. That's a very low limit, here in Canada we can easily have a -20c speel for a few weeks straight.

I want one - but I do not have existing doorbell.. which sucks - but saying that I also wish there was a version that was POE - that I could use without the buying a second indoor ringing box. Id rather have a wired POE version that I could connect up much better solution - with perhaps a tie in to POE Vid phones - ie someone pushes button on doorbell -button- POE phones ring, answer it / see live video of doorbell - and can talk to person at door via the POE vid phone - perhaps add in option that can press a button on POE vid phone that tells the door to unlock? or open even.. - would be interesting take on things

The wiring nubs seem to be more trouble than they are worth. I would probably have just attached the wires directly to the screws or put spade lugs in the wires first if I was feeling fancy.

Seems to be a nice thing to have, but honestly I don't understand why there's not a PoE version of it, and also why there isn't a monitor/phone (PoE as well) for it. I think that addition would be very practical, because doing everything with the smartphone sometimes is not that handy.

Argh. My house has no doorbell... I have to use one of those cruddy wireless ones. It would be worth it to wire up POE, but not supported??? Still, I look forward to your followup video with longer term observations. This looks like a strong contender, if I can get it powered. (Just saw something about a 24v passive POE hack?) I'm not willing to pay monthly fees for a Ring.
