You mentioned a Unifi account if you have the NVR. Is there a monthly fee for that?

Nope, the UniFi account (often referred to as a UI account) is free and let’s you view all your different sites/deployments in one area. I highly recommend it!

What backup options are there to keep say 24 hrs of video remotely?

There currently is no official backup solution other than manually going in and downloading a specific block of video. I don’t see that changing any time soon as people have been asking about it for years to avail. There are community made tools to automatically sync motion detections and events to a cloud provider, but that’s about it unless you really wanted to build your own solution.
