What would you recommend for something like HostiFi but for less than 20 sites? I really only have 4 sites right now, but that could ramp up to a dozen of less. Is getting an FQDN and A record the best way to go, and just point the devices to my inform URL?
@Klementoso3 жыл бұрын
It’s not really about the amount of sites, but more about the number of devices you hook up to the controller. If it’s just 3 devices per site a cloud key could do the job. Most scalable option: Digital ocean or vultr Ubuntu machine with controller. $5 per month is enough for over 100 devices. Does require some fiddling around with Linux though!

I think this “improvement” came out too quickly for it not to have been prepared. During the CK 2.x firmware beta, UI was definitely informed by the community of the issue with multi-site configurations, and a UI team member had stated that being able to add new sites was only temporarily missing. The device firmware usually includes the latest stable controller release. My impression is that the firmware team knew that it would be fixed in the next controller release, but didn’t want to wait for that controller version.

This 'bug' or change of feature already happened in beta like a month ago and was fixed afterwards. I.e. the location of the feature in the interface was moved compared to the older controllers. It disappeared if you didn't have multi site already. It was added again. Then a month later it happened again.
@klimraamkosie3 жыл бұрын
@@WillieHowe Technically a bug would be broken code. If it was a mistake it wouldn't necessarily be labeled as a bug.because it was left out. Just like in the Beta release before. So technically it's a new feature, because the previous release had a flag to hide if there were no extra sites. But their updates notices have always been sub par. I wouldn't ding them for this one occurrence. It's just a feature we care about that's under a microscope. But given their history of bad update numbering/messages this doesn't indicate anything in any direction. "Don't see your Cloud Keys? View Legacy Platform" is more worrying for hosted controllers... The fact that they made it a toggle absolutely guarantees they are backpedaling. They still fully intend to remove the feature - they're just gathering statistics now on who has the toggle enabled. Believe me - I used to play EVE online and CCP used the exact same tactics. If there was community backlash, they took exactly the wrong lessons, implemented their vision anyway after about a year, and they continually become a worse company every time they do this.

Regarding WiFi I'll go with Grandstream, when the time comes. Cheap, central management and good performance. With the switches I am torn between locally managed Aruba Instant On 1930 series or Mikrotik, but there you don't have a central management and you have to manage every device for itself. In a home environment not a huge deal, but still inconvenient. That easy to use central management for all components is the absolute key feature of Ubiquity, that will be difficult to replace, if at all. Can't await Grandstreams products coming this summer (like you mentioned a short time ago). Hopefully any problems are going 'poof' before I actually have to think about them at all...
@Kynetguy3 жыл бұрын
I use the GS7610 at home . I have 3 of them to cover my house. They work fine for home. I have no complaints. The built-in controller aspect is nice. Not great for the novice, but for IT folks, they are a breeze. I have used them with multiple VLANs, SSID, etc with great success. I run them off an Aruba 2930 48port POE switch. (over kill, but it was a "perk" from being in the business.) If you need technical assistance, you need guys like Willie, as their support is worse than Ubiquiti in my experience. :-) All that said, I am probably going to switch to Ubiquiti NanoHDs for the 4x4 features. I have a cloud controller, so there is no concern with controllers for me. But you will not regret GS in your home. They will do all you will need when backed with a good switch and firewall.
@wifiguy_nz3 жыл бұрын
I use Grandstream as my go-to Access Point. (NOT Ubiquiti anymore) Grandstream will be releasing networking switch's this quarter hopefully. The main reason I do not use Ubiquiti these days is because of how they have treated their distributors. My wholesaler has been supporting and promoting them for nearly 10 years and they no longer seam to want to support him. I expect there is politics involved. I also suspect Ubiquiti want to be an Apple and sell direct to the public. As an integrator, this will not help me getting support phone calls when on a customers site. I get very little "Mark Up Value" when selling the product while offering a follow service to the customer over the next 12 months after installation compared to other brands. As for IP Cameras, I am trying out Milesight with their new AI features.
@wiedapp3 жыл бұрын
@@wifiguy_nz Yes, as a manufacturer you should always consider the people who you want to sell your stuff to. You need to want them to buy your stuff. Unfortunately, as of late, many companies seem to have lost that focus. For my home use I will most likely not need professional support (I hope so, at least), but as I have not heard that much about Grandstream here in Germany (extremely little marketing and only two official sellers nationwide), that is a point I will need to live with. I sure hope their line of switches comes with a good feature set. 4x SFP+ with 10G would be very nice to see,for example. The kicker would be managebility together with the APs, like the GWN7000, but just as a switch. Layer 2 VLAN Routing is the last thing I'd like to see, to fence in all the IoT and Smart Home stuff. But that could be done with a OPNSense as well, if needed. But, what I really want, is first and foremost a central managed WiFi system and that is possible with Grandstream. Everything else is the icing on the cake, if it can be adopted into the central management.

I'm smiling at the timestamps in a 4min video :) But yeah, I'm someone who is going to be building out a rack setup for a multi-vlan home network, and while Ubiquiti presents a unified solution, they require a remote account for some reason (which makes no sense and decreases security greatly) and seem pretty capricious about updating firmware to remove features. I don't need a fancy UI and nor do I need to obfuscate network terminology (like a "corporate" vs a "guest" vlan), I just need devices to log into, configure, and forget about until I need to change something, and I'm perfectly capable of configuring vlans, routing, access lists, and whatnot. Ubiquiti makes a fancy solution, but is it really good? What are good alternatives?

Let me be the devil's advocate for a moment. Listing this supposed bugfix as improvement could be mere oversight. Given how quickly this was shelled out would support this, because we all know, how easy it is to make a mistake in a rush. I still belive like you, that they got caught with their hand in a cookie jar, but let's give them the benefit of a doubt, for now. We'll see, how things really are. What interest's me now more, is the fact that you have to tie your cloudkey gen2 and the plus in to their cloud. That need's to be reversed. I'd say, if they do that, they'll show proper good will. As for overloading the cloud key. Well, let there be a hard limit on number of devices. That would be reasonable. Rather than going in these back alleys of customer service.
