AFRO, you said EXACTLY what your problem is at 3:05 You have a plan of things that you EXPECT to work in your head, then you fall apart when they don't. THAT is why you are hard stuck. you need to be able to adapt to each situation and make reads on what your opponents like to do but instead you hand that information over to them first and the rock your shit, play more patient, and pay for the download. you will hit purple my man

Best way to view it is that Tekken is like a boss rush game. Everyone you fight is a boss and you have to learn their attack patterns, adapt if things go wrong, and take advantage of their weaknesses. You'll die again and again but eventually there will be a time where you just breeze through it.

Yea that’s true the amount of times I switch my styles in ranked with the same character is crazy, so much so that I’m flying through the ranks and I just got Strategist in like 2 days. I just started ranked. Afro just needs to be calm and mix em up more often than not.
@Rikent
@Rikent 4 ай бұрын
When I went through something similar I had to remind myself why I'm playing ranked. Sure, it felt good to climb and the first few days of playing is amazing as I cruised through the ranks. However when I reached the rank I'm supposed to be at, the massive influx of serotonin that I get from climbing was suddenly gone and I stopped enjoying the game. I realized that I had to shift my focus from wanting to climb ranks, to wanting to get better at the game. I started my learning process by not spending as much time in ranked anymore. Instead of spamming games I went for a walk or took a break whenever my brain was fried and during the break I'd get a ton of different ideas to try out and would get excited to get back in the game again. I also saved some time for analyzing replays, practicing new things and rehashing the old stuff that I had learned, instead of spending all of my free time on ranked. Once I managed to change my mindset successfully, I went from hardstuck for 2 weeks in Eliminator/Garyu to Tekken King in 2-3 weeks. Climbing ranked kind of became a passive by product of my learning process instead of my only goal in T8. I enjoyed the out of the game learning so much that I one time did not play for a few days and when I came back I'd jump from Tenryu to Fujin.

Definitely this. Focus should be on improving at the game. When you get stuck in rank mentality and being "good enough" for X rank you tend to spiral. Also, not to shoutout other channels but PhiDX has a great video going over this very concept.

Man, the fact that you're stuck is good. Before, when you felt that you were better you didn't see most of your flaws, and now you've become aware of them, which is progress in itself. Everyone has that one phase where they are stuck. Just keep at it and you'll reach purple.

LEGIT ADVICE: Here’s a tip I hope helps. I think the biggest help for me when I got stuck in this rank, was to watch more higher ranked gameplay of the characters I lose the most against. It’s truly matchup and frame knowledge from what I’m watching from your gameplay. Your offense is good but on defense you press buttons when characters still have plus frames on specific moves and they abuse them on you once they realize you don’t realize it. Since your using dragnov abuse his plus frames but not just those moves. After a plus frame move throw in a 2, 1 to keep pressure and you’ll force them to press a button eventually but your frames will still be faster (in most cases) because after your mega plus frames your throwing out a ten frame punish to keep your turn. Hope this helps bro 💯 we should run maybe I can throw a hint or two! 🤙🏽 good luck in the tourney 🫡
@JordanYTT
@JordanYTT 4 ай бұрын
Update: ALSO huge tip for dragnov, after your QCF 4 (your overhead leg plus frame move) your put into your crouch sneak, you can immediately follow up with DF 1, 4 which is a nice pressure move that throws many people off guard, pros like JDCR use it all the time (obviously with caution, not just spam) but after your plus frame overhead sweep you gain good pressure and can mix up with some of your throws, a 2, 1 ten frame jab, your D2 low sweep, and many more options, makes dragnov very viable. Hope this helps 🤙🏽

As someone who’s watched hours of you play atp, I’d say one of the things that bothers me is that you hold on to your heat until the death of the universe. if youre getting pressured, or youre pressuring someone who manages to break said pressure with a poke, use it. esp if you’re bellow half health and they pressure your guard. bc then its kill or be killed. thats my two cents, good luck 😂🙏🏾

To Afro and ALL players stuck in the Red Ranks (coming from a Fujin player). Do this exercise and follow this step by step. I promise it will help a lot. 1. Go to practice mode with your character and a character you hate the most. Pick any stage. 2. Go to the "Practice Settings". Go to "Training Mode" And select "CPU". Then go to "CPU Difficulty" and set it to "Ultra Hard". 3. Now, go back and play against the cpu. Dash in your opponent's face and hold your back. * You are NOT allowed to duck. Let ALL lows hit. If you get hit by anthing, keep holding back to "standing-guard". * You ARE ALLOWED to tech grabs if you can. * You are NOT allowed to attack... yet. Now we really start the exercise: 4. After blocking, steal your turn back with: *Jab - input: 1 *Crouch jab - d1 or db1 depending on the character. *Your fast mid poke - df1 for most characters. Dragunov included. Used if you need a bit more reach. If your standing jab connects whether on hit or block, you can go for a Mid or low/throw mix-up. If your jab whiffs, resume stand blocking and look for opportunities to steal your turn again. If your mid poke hits, go for your mixups. If it gets blocked, resume stand blocking and look for opportunities to steal your turn again. This is how you play Tekken. "Small Tekken" specifically. Yes, there are other options like sidestepping after hits and blocks, but you can worry about those WAY later. Now, just a tough love type of message. If you don't have this skill, you are not qualified to be in the Purple ranks. Legitimately, at least. BUT if you master this... Welcome to the dark blue ranks, Fujin at the very least.

This is a plataeu in fighting games. You have a best of 3 to learn what your opponent does, abuse what weaknesses you find, and keep doing that each individual game. The opponent will also be trying to adapt to how you play, and when you see they change up how they play to counter how you are, then you switch your gameplay to throw them off. This is the way of fighting games.

The yoshimitsu experience is always mindbreaking lol Also whenever I reach a plateau I do player matches and pratice characters that I struggle with or attacks that I struggle to handle. I usually just go to practice mode and train my defense or reaction speeds on a certain character I struggle with and then just place all types of inputs from them that I struggle with and set it all to random to just try and block or punish it until it gets easier to see it coming. Plus you can still rematch the people you lost to and test yourself against them, see how it goes….if they’re account isn’t private. Good luck with the grind Afro, don’t give up.

I guess one thing that might help is to focus less on that shiny new rank and focus primarily more on enjoying the game and learning how you can further improve on your main. New sub here! I'm happy that you've been enjoying this game and it is EXTREMELY good that you are now at the point that you've essentially plateau'd. You've gotten pretty far doing what you've been doing. I've watched a couple of your videos now on Tekken but you've essentially played the same until now you're at the point where you have to evolve your gameplay and mindset. You're at that point where you have to learn punishment. You're at the point where you cannot simply out mash your opponent consistently. Learning matchup, your own character's strength, and simply blocking effectively will get you a long way. You aren't even maximizing your damage when your turn goes your way because you only get a string in or a simple grab. And as you get higher, those simple tactics will be less & less reliable. Cant wait to see growth 🔥

your growth in such a short amount of time is pretty exceptional my brother, im in the same boat. never really played tekken before 8 and now i’m fighting to get out of tenryu, and i struggle with my one formula that brought me up here in the first place. especially because sometimes if i’m locked i can use it against the purple ranks too, but that doesn’t cut it when i’m playing against someone with a brain because they’ll just adapt to me and punish until i want to backflip off a building. but recently i’ve been seeing progress and steady improvement by trying 2 new things that i think will help you out a lot too. 1, punishment practice with combos and options i never thought of, ive come up with new plans for new scenarios that have helped me shake things up against opponents who can adapt to my play style. it helps to sit in the lab, and run 2 or 3 more plans over and over until you know what to do if plan A doesn’t work. if your brain works in steps like that then have plans that are the opposite of your bread and butter to force your opponent to adapt to something new on some mahoraga type shit. and 2, MOST importantly, im sure you’ve heard it a million times but patience is key. for me, if i’m getting my ass kicked i like to drop back and treat it like a dark souls encounter. we all have movesets like those bosses and if you wait and watch you’ll know how to defend and how to punish. it’s been nice watching your tekken videos because in a weird parasocial way we’ve been progressing at the same rate. i’m sure there’s a lot of people out there like me too, so don’t let us leave you behind my brother. you got this shit easy

Rage arts are a bit more challenging to time stamp where to use if you're using it as a comeback tool due to damage scaling. However, what i can tell you as a tip is that what makes rage arts special is they erase gray health. So low health scaling aside you can use them as combo extenders; if you're opponent has more gray health than you do and you have the ability to rage art.

The round after that I use my rage art and it hits him but just knocks him away and doesn’t actually do the rage art to the point that both him and I just stood still for a good 10 seconds wondering wtf just happened. You're being way too hard on yourself. The growth that you have had in this game is legit impressive. You make some of the same call outs that I would make (i.e. when they are on the ground and you choose to go low) and some of those get blocked too. You're just at the level now of playing against people like this. As long as you keep putting time in, something else will just click just like when you started to learn how to stream effective combos. This is one of the toughest humps to get over, but we are cheering you on, bro. I would say if you haven't done so already, to just take advantage of the replays and lab with how to counter situations that you struggle with.

Yo Afro I have some things that I can get you on. First watch a man named JDCR, he’s one of if not the best drags in the game. You can learn what moves he does in certain situations so you won’t need to. And next learn a tech that only drag can to named “sneak canceling”. Your current juggle combo isn’t gonna cut in those ranks because of how short it is. You can use it for wall combos like you did in the start but only for those OR if your opponent has enough health to where they die from it. Sneak cancellations increase your damage from 70 to 107 or 90. Also please play more patient, in the ranks you are at now doing > > ^ will get you punished like crazy because that’s what they look for. I hope this finds you well.❤ (also sneak canceling is hard to pull off, I recommend that you do moves while the other one is still playing. And once you do pull it off, practice it on a hard or ultra hard Reina cpu because Reina is the hardest character to hit combos on. Stay safe)

I feel the frustration bro. Afro if you're reading let me tell you that you have the fundamentals, you have the tech and like you demonstrated in practice mode and against Q, you know how to use it. It doesn't come as easy in fight because we get worked up and I think that's your main issue. You gotta calm down bro and that doesn't mean have a negative mindset. You gotta think positive, keep your cool and the tools will come to you when you need them. I'd say grab a post it note and put it on your monitor and write "calm down" or something like that. Look at it when you get worked up and breathe. I feel like you might already know this but let it hit home, its holding you back. You got this bro, see you in the tournament.

Hey Afro you did AWESOME on the stream today in the Tournament. That was fuckin hype! Cant wait to see your video on that. Real quick: One thing Dragonuv gets during his heat is that some of his regular moves become launchers, keep an eye out for youtube videos that focus on Dragonuvs strings during heat mode. You tend to heat smash right after activating, (i do this too sometimes) but honestly all that does is takes away some of my overal versatility because most of my attacks for Yoshi are far more enhanced during heat mode and knowing the ones to use for launchers is super helpful in getting my opponents health down during Heat

I don't interact much in KZbin or anything, but I do like your videos a lot and been here since Naruto storm era. I juat have to say that you are doing great. We have all been on the same plateau you are right now. The majority od the people are in red ranks right now, so it is normal that you have this back and forth. It is good to have a game plan, and if it works for a couple of rounds, abuse the hell out of it. However, the moment the opponent adapts change. They duck, you launch. For example, on the first three hits of your main string, people know a low comes next. Anticipate that and do a launcher. Doesn't work, then start side stepping. There is not a printed formula. Just know that you have made an incredible amount of progress from when you started. You said it on one of your streams, take the loses as learning experiences. And remember, taking a one day break from the game also helps with the frustration. You come back stringer

Hey Afro I got a few tips. One of the things I noticed is that you don't duck as much as I think you should. Ducking allows you to avoid highs and block lows. Poking with 10 frame jabs can help to get your turn back during neutral or where you can. Also learning common lows for characters. During your first fight against Paul, he got you with a low that I see happen often when I fight Paul's. Either way you're doing really well if this is your first Tekken game. Just take it a bit slower and enjoy the game don't quit!

As a long time Dragunov player one of my favorite ways to keep pressure going is the use of his forward 3 kick grab. Use it more for checking knowledge on if they can tech an unexpected grab. And if successful follow it with low kicks or if they can react quicker use a rising forward 2

7:26 the combo that Jwong taught you this is a heat engager. It's a great pressure tool because it's still + on block or they get hit by it. If you're not using it for pressure specifically then the best time to use it would be in moments like 11:57. A good way to tell when you activate your heat raw vs a heat engager is to look at how much gray health you have, and the distance between you and your opponent. You want enough space to hit the combo without being interupted by their own jabs or counter hits. Heat engagers regenerate gray health; but activating raw heat does not. You have to deal damage to regen.

afro look, as drag, one of your go to mids(used when opponents are ducking) is back 4,3 this is a heat engager. also USE YOUR DOWN BACK 3!!! it’s a very nice 50/50 since if they don’t block, they get sent into a combo, if they do then you can cancel it into a grab that grabs low and also heat engages, it’s a risk but if you can read your opponent it’s extremely useful. praying for you brother

I think the reason you are frustrated is you are too focused on ranking up 🙂 Don't mind losing, and focus on improving your fundamentals, (movement, side stepping, poking, mixups etc.) Whenever you feel stuck and don't improve, watching high ranking players replay using your character against characters you are struggling against helps a ton! 🙂 I'll be rooting for your team in the tournament!

As someone who has competed in 2 different fighting games, you truly are one of us, one of us, one of us, one of us, also, some things to keep in mind, don't try to play like you want to be the best, play like you want to beat the best, its a small but useful change in mindset. The idea is, don't be afraid of failing, be afraid of not trying your best to beat someone.

8:53 that move can be cancelled into a grab by pressing square and triangle at the same time. you can also use the double forward with X and O to do a wide kick and a roll kick respectively. i like to use the roll to close distance but it can be sidestepped

Idk, seeing someone getting angry that he is not hitting purple rank in his first Tekken game ever in a month is stupid funny Edit: btw, if you are so mad at a game that you’re actually screeching at your screen, that’s a great time to turn off your ps and go outside, eat, sleep, whatever. But you’re not going to improve in a triggered mental state when you’re sure that what you’re doing is good and it should work (obviously its not good) and just do it over and over again and get demolished. Like, listening to you, i’m sure my blood pressure was raised by feeling how angry you are.

Dont beat yourself up so much man, I know its a lot but you’re improving. I’d say go and watch the replays and when it pauses throughout the replay takeover so you can see the things you can do to punish/beat these situations they put you in. Im having the same issue hitting these ceilings but doing that and playing against the people/character I have issues with really help me a lot. It’s highspeed chess/mindgames imo You got it though fam. Take your time, a break if you need to and come back when youre ready 👍🏾

I think one of the main things you could work on is what moves you have to use to punish which moves. There's a lot of times youd block some attacks you could punish, but you attack back with an attack that's too slow. I think if you learn the moves you use and how quickly they come out, you would do wayyy better

What I noticed inranked is a lot of people in your current rank don’t react well to mix ups also learn to confirm hits on the ground. When you have your opponent pressured heat is a good way to keep them under that pressure

How to get through these platous is simply changing your thinking to caring less about ranked and more about honing in step by step gameplans no matter how many times you lose, especially in tekken when losing is your key for learning can't get mad at it, just gotta embrace it and move forward wish you the best man

What helped me get out of red ranks was utilizing combo strings and moves that hit mid and are fast frames. My mid combo is 13 frame which is solid and it doesn’t leave you too vulnerable after the string. The power of mid hits is that if your opponent tries to duck, they get hit. Mix up high and mid combo strings for close up pressure. Then throw some lows in there.

The “plan” you think you have is a flow chart for the opponent. The higher rank you get, the more keen people are to picking up your flow chart. For example, almost every round you start with the armor move. Your brain is on auto pilot so you might not notice that, but a good opponent will and punish you for it. Switch up your play style every round, be less predictable. If you really want to get good, learn the frame data and punish blocked moves accordingly. Good luck Afro! I enjoy watching your progress.

Imma be honest man, you’re making so much progress in a short amount of time. And right now you’re at that phase where you feel like you’re plateauing, but it’s actually just the application phase of your training and all the things you were taught. Maybe a change of pace would benefit more towards applying your training. I haven’t played much Tekken, so I don’t know how good the CPUs are, but I always found that when fighting CPUs in fighting games, it’s a lot easier to focus on practicing combo applications and getting used to what other characters do. You’re doing great man. All the love and keep it up.

To further this point, a lot of pro players play against computers when learning a new character in fighting games; Maximillian Dood, Justin Wong, Brian F, Kizzie K. They may not need to do it as much anymore, but they translate that mindset of learning into their online matches. This isn’t a method that you have to use, however, I thought I’d share what works for me in multiple fighting games. (And continue to watch your replays. You’re very good at identifying your own habits, and watching replays will just elevate that.)
