"Every Breath You Take" was probably one of the first songs I learned all the words to as a young'in and it honestly didn't take me long to latch onto the fact that it could really be taken the wrong way. This might've been the first song where I ever really thought about what it actually meant...I always picked up words fairly quick but for long time words to songs were just sounds I was stringing together. "Every Breath You Take" was one of the first where I ever thought about what those words meant. I remember being quite young and at point in the car I turned to my mom and said something like, "couldn't these words be like what a boy would say to a girl even if she didn't want to be his girlfriend? It could scare the girl, right? If he's watching her all the time but she doesn't like being his girlfriend anymore? And if she gets a new boyfriend he's not gonna like the old boyfriend watching her and following her around." I don't remember exactly what my mom said...I'm sure she tried to brush it off so that I didn't associate that song with such inappropriate behavior.
