This beautiful train 4014 is a national treasure and I think it’s fitting that it goes to all the continental 48 states so that we here on the east coast can admire its strength and beauty take pictures in person what a wonderful experience that would be please make that happen to the powers that be

I love that part of the country. I grew up north of that area, the high desert. I like that they have a refurbished caboose on the train, just like the old days.

Beebe, Steinheimer, and Clegg would have been at the Palisades, for sure! Could one imagine the prose of Beebe describing this "Silurian monster out of the Book of Job" crawling across the plains of Lahontan? Goose bumps!

Yes, Beebe was an interesting character. His ornate writing could range from colorful to disdainful. Nothing like it today.

Thanx for the great video. I thought with 4014 having PTC installed it no longer require a diesel loco in the mix
@airailimages

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It has been said the diesel is used especially where downgrades require braking, to save wear-and-tear on the old Big Boy's brakes since steam locomotive brakes are no longer an easy item to repair and replace.

Thanks Deb! Since the Big Boy ran to Elko on Saturday, and then took Sunday off, it gave me a day to check out a number of roads on its route before Monday. And I should be happy that you watch the videos all the way through the end!

Is the diesel engine used as helper or just backup in case of a problem?
@airailimages
@airailimages 6 ай бұрын
It has been suggested the diesel could provide emergency power in case of a problem, and also provide dynamic braking to ease the load on the steam locomotive's older braking system that is more difficult to repair and replace these days.
@longrider42
@longrider42 5 ай бұрын
Or the PTC that was installed into the Tender back in May, has failed or malfunctioned. But yes, for Dynamic Braking, and help on long hauls between fuel stops. Back in the day when Steam Loco's ran on coal. There was pretty much a stop every 50 to 75 miles, depending on terrain for coal and water. But the Big Boy runs on Number 5 fuel oil now. So they could have tank trucks where they need them.
@davidbross6942
@davidbross6942 6 ай бұрын
Why is the diesel loco part of the train again? I thought they figured out how to replace it.
@airailimages
@airailimages 6 ай бұрын
Likely because of grades on parts of the route, where the diesel's dynamic braking power can save wear-and-tear on the 4014's old brakes, since there isn't a big shop rebuilding those brakes all the time like there was back in the day.

Doese anyone know when the UP stopped regular service with steam engines?
@airailimages
@airailimages 6 ай бұрын
I believe the UP ended revenue steam service in 1959, but had already replaced many steam locomotives with diesels before then. I remember, as a kid, visiting the UP roundhouse in Green River, probably in 1959, and seeing about a half-dozen Big Boys plus the 2-10-2 No. 5511 in storage in that dark roundhouse. One UP worker told us there was a possibility the Big Boys were to be sold to a railroad in South America -- Argentina, I think. But that never came to pass. And UP kept the 5511 stored at Green River, and then Cheyenne, for decades before making it available to a group in the midwest to restore this past year. UP also likes to say that their 4-8-4 steam locomotive No. 844 is the only steam locomotive they never retired. It went right into excursion service and never left the railroad.

Does anyone know why so much water was pouring out of the locomotive near the rear cylinder on the left side?
@johnburger3287
@johnburger3287 6 ай бұрын
That is the fireman's side injector to put water in the boiler. The water is what is left over from priming the injector. You see the same thing on the engineers side just behind the cab. That is the engineers side injector. Completely normal.
@timryan9220
@timryan9220 6 ай бұрын
@@johnburger3287 Thank you so much for this answer. It seems like a bit of a waste of resources since a steam engine uses much more water than fuel oil. I guess if you're pulling a couple of extra tenders it's not critical.

Love the video!!! Fun fact: Golconda, Nevada (and Golconda, Illinois and Golconda, Tasmania) were named after Golconda, India which houses the Golconda fort and was also the name given to the mines that produced some of the world's largest diamonds back in the day! Famous Golconda diamonds include the colorless Koh-i-Noor, the Nassak Diamond, the blue Hope Diamond, the Idol's Eye, the pink Daria-i-Noor, the white Regent Diamond, the Dresden Green Diamond, and the colorless Orlov Diamond. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golconda_diamonds
