You have to see it. My dad and I did in northern Nevada and seeing that thing fly by as fast as it did. The whole ground shakes. The whistle is sooo freakin loud it's just awesome!

I guess I'm used to the east side where there's no diesel engines stuck in the same consist. ruins it for me but maybe somebody out there can give me their perspective

The diesel is there for braking assistance via its Dynamic Braking

Why the diesel electric engine in the middle?

The diesel is there as I understand to provide electric power to the coaches and to help with braking power, since brake shoes on the Big Boy are expensive, and UP is trying not to wear them out too soon. It also helps with Positive Train Control, although Big Boy has been fitted so that it can run PTC without the diesel, if needed. Probably still good to have the diesel for electric power and braking, though.
