I am a retired CPR conductor. I've been retired 9 years after working 37 years. Thirty odd yrs back, we had a 45 mph speed restriction on certain empty gondola and bulkhead flatcars that were not equipped with constant contact side bearings. These are located under the carbody and touch the top of the truck sidecasting to prevent hunting. The cars you've shown seem newer than the ones we had restrictions on, but a sidebearing issue might have something to do with the wat these cars are tracking.
@uhlijohn5 жыл бұрын
I thought it was a 50 MPH speed restriction? I am a retired UPRR loco engineer. You could be right though....I've been retired for over 6 years.
@rjb58475 жыл бұрын
@@uhlijohn CP has always been conservative in their rulemaking, ours was 45, but our maximum speed for freight system wide is only 60mph. UPs restriction could have been 50. Our restriction was issued by the company not the regulator.We had some trains that exercised running rights on CN who had no restrictions on those cars.. their dispatchers were always giving our crews hell for going too slow on those trains.
@markreardon34725 жыл бұрын
Constant contact side bearings actually keep the car from leaning and an even load on the truck bolster span which in turn is supported by the spring packs. Most hunting occurs when the wheels have lost their proper profile allowing the truck assembly to freely "float" in a happy spot on the profile of the rail. Some side contact bearings we're nothing more than a solid round of steel in a pocket casting on top of the bolster span.
@rjb58475 жыл бұрын
@@markreardon3472 thanks for the info. I know wide gauge can have a similar effect like worn wheels with some cars. The side bearing issues we had on CP may have been harmonic oscillation type behaviour, but seemed to resemble hunting at higher speeds.
@rjb58475 жыл бұрын
@@markreardon3472 having looked at the video again it's clear that the trucks are hunting significantly, I would assume the motion of the carbody is caused by that hunting rather than side bearings as you've noted.

That UP Gondola is fairly old, it has poling pockets on the end, that makes it at least a 60's era car, the practice of poling (it's dangerous at best) was outlawed by most railroads by about 1964, and it was completely gone by the early 1970's. It's obviously had a very long service life.
@markfryer98805 жыл бұрын
@Amed Tajan Poling pockets are round cups on each corner of a car or locomotive and were used with a long pole to push a car or a cut of cars clear of the fouling point of a switch or siding.

I thought so too... it most likely had a truck replacement to the modern design... I can tell because it appears to have dropping bulkheads for long loads like beams but railroads just use flatcars now, usually they would weld on a fixed bulkhead and install a standard brake wheel instead of a lever, matter of fact most gondolas of that age would be cut up by now.. it definitely is very old and likely from the 60s, not only that but it’s shaking like the CNW gondola behind it... but not as bad though, it may also be going for scrap because I think it also had scrap in it, but normally would be marked in spray paint or something..

Both the CNW and the UP gondolas are shaking like they are... they are definitely near the end of their service life... if anything was put in the middle of that CNW gondola it would bend in half, it was not just shaking, but twisting too. The UP gondola is no exception.. it is possibly even older than the CNW one because it looks like the end bulks drop down for oversized loads like large steel beams and girders for buildings and bridges but they use flatcars now (duh) so most of those gondolas had the bulks fixed in place, also the hand brake was a lever instead of a wheel because we put the wheels on the end of the cars and that is the only other thing that could be done because the brake wheel would obstruct it from lowering, and even that was replaced with a normal brake wheel after welding the bulkhead in place... but back to the issue, the cars look like the problem is where the car is mounted on the trucks possibly loose or worn out whatever keeps it stable. I also know that UP gondola probably had S1 trucks instead of the S2 when it was built. Yet again because that car wasn’t built for the bigger S2 so it looks like it doesn’t fit well.

Wow, very great captures of this phenomena! It can be caused by many things, even a combination of things, such as rail wear/profile, wheel tread profile, worn bolster plates, worn socket for bolster pins, worn pads on the bogie frame, broken/bad springs, etc... Locomotives can do this too. The SD90MAC/SD9043MAC are notorious, as when a rubber damper wears out, it will start a hunting oscillation ... yeah, with a load of 180+ tons...! Edit: Also, I see a LOT of gondola cars with banged up or warped sides. Why on earth do the railroads keep using them? I suppose, the steel is the softer kind, so it has more flexibility, and it might not be such a problem. But it certainly looks horrible! Edit2: BTW, it's not a bad idea to look up the car owner and railroad it is currently on, to tell them about the problem and voice your concern.
@travelingtom9235 жыл бұрын
I will have a video tomorrow of a locomotive oscillation. The gondola cars are practically indestructible. I used to work in a scrap yard loading those cars with scrap metal. Some of the old Santa Fe cars were from the 50's and still in daily use. As long as they are structurally sound they will continue to be used. Union Pacific has recently installed a sophisticated system of sensors and cameras at the North Platte yard to determine if these cars need to be bad ordered. If those cars were bad they would know it. Maybe I will make a video of that location the next time I am up there.

Do the railroads still use the "rear ender" designation? If so, regarding certain defects, a rail car is allowed to travel empty at the rear of a train to the closest shop. Usually a speed restriction is ordered, meaning that the train is not allowed to exceed a certain speed. If this is not an option, the railcar has to be repaired in place.

Gord Baker I would like to know exactly where this yard was so I can track it down, the only thing there now is that short siding in the middle of town and the long Tiffin siding at the top of Ranger Hill a couple miles north of town. Do you remember the red brick streets along the UP mainline? The brick streets are still there, but are very rough now days. There are a lot of red brick structures in that area, the brick was made in Thurber, Texas about 20 east of Ranger. It was a cheap building product during the 1920's and 30's. At one time highway 80 was paved from Ft. Worth supposedly west at least as far as Mineral Wells. That happened during the depression as one of those work projects.

What's the distance between posts? At 0:15/0:20 got the train goin past railway posts. If we may know the distance between posts, then we can calculate the speed.
@thomasboese37934 жыл бұрын
If I'm right ~ Figure 230 feet, between each of 5 posts, 1150 feet over 12 seconds, so the number of seconds in an hour - 3600/12 = 300 ~ 300 * 1150 = 345,000 feet per hour or 345,000/5,280 = 65.34 miles per hour. "IF" I'm right. UP has always been know for speed, even the Big Boys back in the day hit 80.

Truck Hunting can be a very serious defect, can cause derailments. Most class 1 railroads have sensor equipment built into track to analyze this today. This car had a Home Shop-Do Not Load sticker on it for this very reason. Center Plate worn out is likely the issue. Would say car was sent to an off-line repair facility, noticing removed sticker and repainted numbers on car, but real repairs were never made to car. I've cars much worse than this, actually hopping from side to side on wheels, truly scary to see.

Bogie Hunting was solved a long time ago, separately by South African Railways and by British Rail’s Research Department, Derby, UK. How come these obsolete bogies are still in use?

@@travelingtom923 Thanks for your reply. I think Scheffel bogies would stop all the hunting and wear. They have cross bracing in the form of an X between the wheelsets. Very simple and effective up to 160kph says an ex SAR driver. Also a cheap bogie.

There are many causes of train hunting and is a of combination of track conditions, wheel wear, and speed. How did UK and South Africa solve bogie hunting? Any resources I can look into?
@stephensmith7992 жыл бұрын
@@jdaniel9622 Check out the Scheffel Bogie (South African Railways). It has cross members (bracing) between axle boxes that have some movement in them provided by rubber blocks. Very simple. The slightest wandering by the leading wheelset is dampened by contrary movement in the trailing wheelset in the same bogie. British Rail Engineering Ltd (BREL), Derby found hunting could be solved by giving each wheelset more independence relative to the bogie frame. I like the the SAR solution for its simple genius and low cost.

I am wondering since its probably an old cut down boxcar that was repeatedly used in a steel recycling facility to haul scrap metal (?). I have seen quite a few antique cars that ended their useful lives this way, and most likely, was very heavily dump loaded by metal cranes and it possibly bent the frame/trucks. If this is the case I really wouldn't think they wouldn't waste time, and money to rebuild the car, but just send it to the scrap yard to be cut up instead, or are just moving it to another steel mill to use again.
@carolinarailfanning5 жыл бұрын
well at this age it probably is limited to scrap haulage only, some old gondolas have “SCRAP METAL ONLY” spray painted on the sides and sometimes the ends too.. but I don’t think it was formerly a boxcar by the way it looks.. it’s from the CNW so it’s just old.

If there is opposing train going the opposite direction and this car derails and goes into the adjacent track,it could wind up killing the train crew of the opposing train,plus destroy quite a few cars,maybe even a explosion if they happen to be loaded tank cars with flammable liquids. That car needs to be put on a flatbed and taken to the repair yards as soon as possible.

I saw this train earlier going about 60 and that car was shaking so badly I was sure it was going to derail. In the video it is only going about 40.
