Wise words just as applicable now as they were when this subject was produced. Every driver MUST remember that a train has the ABSOLUTE right-of-way over ALL OTHER VEHICLES, including emergency vehicles. Also remember that blowing through an activated grade crossing signal is the same as running a red light; many states have very stiff fines for any driver who runs one, provided said driver survives the impending collision. It's always better to be late to your destination because of a train than to never arrive at all!

Wrong only about 1/4 of railroad crossing have gates. And gates don’t stop anything they are fiberglass tubes. Being someone who works on train crew I can tell you people will either swerve around them or break right though them

@@TheBeeMan1994 Yeah. But in my area, virtually all the railroad crossings DO have gates. It's probably because the railroad tracks are pretty busy, with 25 to 30 commuter trains and a few freight trains every day.

17:54 For those who are mistaken in the train for a union pacific F 10 which does not exist that train was not an after an adult it was a union pacific general electric GDEL gas turbine those diesels were union pacific big boy replacements however this one is a mark three and today there are only two marked 3DDEL gas turbines in preservation the first one is turban number 18 and the second one is number number 26 all generation one and generation two gas turbines and the prototype gas turbine And the remainder of the mark 3 gas turbines are dead.

A lot of this stuff STILL applies today. It's also neat how in addition to railroad crossing safety, the Union Pacific teaches about other driving safety tips. I found these useful when I was learning to drive. (3:44) Yep, that's pretty much how I acted when my drivers' license came in the mail! (20:03 - 20:26) They cheated! They just turned off the sound until the second train was visible. At the least I'd hear the second train's horn or some kind of faint rumble.

It’s about accurate. You don’t hear them approaching if they aren’t blowing their horn. I mean yeah you hear something but when in a car that’s about all you hear

Nope, that is very accurate. You don't hear them until they are indeed on top of you. The track road bed does an excellent job of absorbing sound as do the locomotives' trucks/bogies. And trackside buildings block sound as well. So unless you can see both ends of the track clearly, always assume a train is coming. And even if you see it, don't try to estimate its oncoming speed especially when you are right next to the tracks because the train is traveling at a much faster speed than it seems when you are almost directly in front of it.

@@arrow1414 Oh, I NEVER take chances with railroad tracks anyways. Even if a railroad crossing's signals aren't flashing I always slow down when I approach one, and if I AM approaching one and the signals start flashing I STOP, even if I have to slam on the brakes.

@@jaminova_1969 Yes, that they do. A smartphone's GPS app is very useful, but I always keep a map in my car. I use both a Rand-McNally US highway map book and a DeLorme Florida Atlas & Gazetteer map book. The latter shows all of the major and minor state and federal highways, but it also shows county roads and almost every back road in the state! There is no super detail for cities and most towns (except very small ones), although major highways and interchanges are shown; there are other maps for that. The Atlas also has cartographic and GPS references on each page. DeLorme makes an Atlas for every state, updated every two to three years.
