It would be awesome to see more artifacts of failed freeway projects. In Mpls, MN southbound 35 has a decaying portion of a failed auxiliary route's onramp (I-335) here: 44°59'30.2"N 93°14'12.5"W. The demolition of buildings along the proposed route happened before I-335 project failed, so in the 70's that land was redeveloped, so for about 8 blocks the architecture is starkly different than the surrounding area (Along 3rd Ave NE starting from the Mississippi River) Or even more remnants of old bridges! Cleveland, OH's Superior viaduct is a fascinating example.
@bruh6663 жыл бұрын
When you use the node/segment controller to make a highway ramp really really smooth / long, it sometimes causes a bug that causes traffic to slow down to a grind, that's what's happening at the highway onramp where the highway goes past downtown over the iron heart, and what was mostly causing the traffic issue (it's fixed now bc they don't wait every time a car makes the slow drive over the node, but you can still see they're moving in slowmo over the node at 18:16 )

If you ever need help figuring out placements for railyards, in most cases they were built where they were needed in the early 1900's so if there was a freight terminal, factory, industrial area or anything that demanded easy access to freight, a railyard would be nearby. Not sure f that helps cause in terms of shaping they really just branch out like a tree which you got really well! Astro is amazing with railyards, but Amazing video nonetheless, i cant wait to see more of cabrillo!

I think the railyard is likely former Southern Pacific, considering the hold they had on California, especially norcal. It could also be former Western Pacific, which a transcon to the bay area. Both merged with Union Pacific during the most recent phase of consolidation. Regarding letting BNSF on the shoreline route, it’s pretty realistic if they have a separate mainline that joins up with the UP line. Terminal railways are also pretty common too, and BNSF picked up a lot of trackage rights during the UP mergers
@businessmanderek57393 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not from Antioch to Richmond, UP and BNSF parallel each other very closely but with seperate mainlines, then at Richmond, UP shares their trackage with BNSF for the run down to the port of Oakland. So it would be realistic to have a little bit of BNSF in the UP yard or visa versa! My recommendation is that you have shared trackage to a smaller yard on the outskirts of town for primarily BNSF, then the mainlines split to go off the map. (for inspiration look around Pinole and Antioch)

@@rsgeek4503 very true, and very unfortunate. Hence why I criticized Pres for doing ANOTHER Cities series in the Western US. The Netherlands stuff was interesting, but what happened to it? 2$20 had a cool series with his Chinese inspired city, or his original Down Under series that focused on the Outback, but sadly, those are gone as well. I miss Flux and Strict so much, because they kept it different - always innovating with a new series idea. The only reason I’m even watching this episode is because I like trains, I haven’t watched the others. Akruas is simply wonderful. The Atsuki series is good as well (if it’s going to continue), as are Vedastein and Sanctum Gamers’ two series. CityWokCityWall is doing some cool stuff with Mars and the Stellaris Invicta series, and Skibbith had a cool thing going with his Paris recreation. PHNTX and Palm’s Time are also doing some unique stuff, which is great. But I still miss Flux and Strict. Maybe one day the masters shall return (or at the very least we’ll see some more unique stuff from the current ‘big’ skylines KZbinrs). And that’s not to criticize Pres’ work - he’s a great detailer and tells good stories, but come on man go outside your Californian/West Coast comfort zone in a series with more than like three episodes (looking at you Midwest + Netherlands). Better yet, go outside your US comfort zone more

By creating an extra road that connects to the main highway, using traffic manager to block traffic from using that highway and using some blockades at the start and end of the road you can make it look abandoned or scrapped. And by changing the color of the highway in a slightly darker gray tone it can be seen as not used due to the surface not wearing off because no cars have ever driven there.

I saw someones comments saying that you should make rail history throughout the city, and a great way to do that (and also a very good project) is by doing something based off the Springwater Trail, which was a train line transformed into a bike/pedestrian path (and there are metro lines that go near the trail in many places)

Turns out Burnaby BC is basically just a residential suburb of Vancouver which happens to have a very tall commercial center in the middle of suburbia.

Hi, Pres. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to post the same comment I put on your North American Railyard video (Columbia City 36) but will also edit for application to this video/build. As a model railroader and one who studies the prototypes (in this case, BNSF Interbay Yard), it looks amazing, but is lacking a couple of details you may want to incorporate in future builds. It helps to understand the terminology, so I'll throw some out in hopes that it may help someone reading this down the road. Learning about Railroads and terminology: You have the Double-Track Mainline that everything operates off of. Then you would have 2-4 (sometimes more, it just depends, and there is a "Hump" yard at Interbay, so that can change the layout) "Arrival" and "Departure" tracks. So arriving trains would tie-down (park) here, their power (engines) would uncouple and head to the Engine facility (adjacent to the north end Yard Ladder - where the switches are) to be inspected, refueled, have sand refilled (used to increase traction under the wheels going upgrade), and then they would move to "Ready" tracks to prepare for their next assignment. Then you have the classification tracks where trains are broken down and new ones built up based on destination (in "Blocks" of cars). To facilitate this flat switching, and also to provide room to get on and off the mainline, you will have Yard Lead tracks, which will extend (typically) parallel to the mainline either way from the yard ladders. Typically these are long enough for switch engines to pull the longest yard track, then push the cars into other classification tracks. But it's not necessary. And it could be stub-ended. The key is you want trains to be able to arrive and depart the yard without interfering with the switchers, and vice-versa. Of course, in this game situation, it would be perfectly good to use "Selective compression" for aspects of the yard. Your model has the ladders and classification tracks, and we could say the two tracks closest to the mainline are the arrival/departure tracks. I would look at adding a little space between the mains and A/D tracks. Maybe a dirt or gravel road. Same space between the A/D tracks and Classification tracks. Usually crew trucks will drive down these roads because nobody wants to walk the mile+ to and from their locomotives. A half-length Yard lead would be good, and then a couple of extra tracks parallel to the ladders so engines could drive around. You could have a dirty, weed-covered "RIP" (Repair In Place) track. And 2-4 tracks for engine servicing/ready tracks. A yard office and dirt/gravel service roads, along with some trash, weeds, a boxcar off wheels used for storage, and other things would be appropriate. Now to address THIS video. Amtrak uses freight railroad tracks across the country. Freight trains are supposed to give way to passenger rail. The functions performed at an engine house depend on the size/location of the yard. They may perform just light repairs (replacing a traction motor, for example. That's the electrical motor that is driven by the generator/alternator (driven by the diesel engine), and it drives the axles under the locomotive via gears. There are a few yards for the big railroads where they perform up to full rebuilds of locomotives (such as Altoona, PA for Norfolk Southern, or Davidson Yard for Union Pacific in Fort Worth, Texas). There could be an Intermodal train in the yard. It might just be getting a crew change as the yard could be a Division Point. Or maybe a power swap if a locomotive breaks down. You could build an Intermodal Port adjacent to a major railyard... An example would be Alliance Yard on the BNSF in Texas. Also, though MOST intermodal trains are all well cars, quite a few have TOFC (Trailer On Flat Car) cars (which were actual flat cars 50 years ago, now they're more "spine" cars. So you can add those in at the back of an intermodal train for variety. And sometimes you'll even see a few intermodal well cars or TOFC mixed in with a Manifest freight train (which will have all kinds of rolling stock). The locomotive shed looks good. Just need a concrete fueling pad and sanding tower. Maybe some junk out back, and a RIP (Repair In Place) track with a gondola with freight car axles in it... :) In building under a highway (which, more often than not, the rail yard would have been there first, I'd suggest taking a track out here or there to make room for the support pylons. There are even cases of the tracks "bending" slightly around them. The reduced speed of trains is GREATNESS!!! This is something I think a lot of players overlook. 10-20 mph in yards, maybe 40 mph in cities, then up to 60 or 70 for freight trains outside town. There's a lot of rail cars with graffiti, but not every car... And those autoracks, while they have some, are open-sided cars (to save weight). Looks terrific! Thanks for sharing!

Why UP? With the amount of derailments that particular Class 1 railroad has, why not BNSF, who is making more money hauling less, than UP hauling more, and wrecking a good portion of it (3 examples in the last week, because of track & equipment defects due to lack of trained personnel). I get that UP is common, but the rep does not deserve it. BNSF is also extremely common in the region Cabrillo is based, out of 15 lines that are Canada-Southern Cali, 8 are BNSF, 4 are G&W, CP, 2 are UP. Tell ya what, out of the big name roads (CN, CP, CSX, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and Kansas City Southern (for now)), i'd trust BNSF to haul my stuff by rail, all the other roads have something going on, and for this series, and being a railroad buff (soon to retire, get my knowledge before it's rewritten to the Kreigsmarine!), i'd say that (Again) Union Pacific is a BAD move. VERY BAD. Lets look at numbers for this yard under UP, then BNSF; UP: switch crew (locomotive, engineer, conductor, switchman) : 1, trains leaving per hour: 8, maintenance crew: NOTTA/FOROUGHED/maybe a few (4) new hires, and a experienced foreman, BNSF: switch crew (locomotive, engineer, conductor, switchman): 2 , trains leaving per hour: 6, maintenance crew: there, but not in full numbers, maybe half a crew.
@BattleshipOrion3 жыл бұрын
Also for your design: reduce tracks down to 15 (that is a large yard today on any system), remove engine shed (or abandon it), add lead, add FT (Fuel Track), large parking lot (for maintenance crew, semis loaded with train wheels, or parts), remove mains 3-4 (closest to river), yard ladder needs to be single track (complete down to switch to lead (absent)), either lower classification yard, or upper classification yard needs gone, the tow sidings near the river need lengthened if they are staying (I like them actually, maybe the transload refuse/garbage from train to barge (this is done my containers now, look up BNSF Garbage train)), add 5 locomotives (one switcher for the yard, and 2 locomotives similar to the Gp40/38-2 series for locals (short trains that serve the area town, or a series of industries in a given area) add a "Y" to the split to yard (approx. 5:03). Notice nothing about car storage. This is actually because if a car is not moving, it aint making money. If this sounds like a tall order, I apologize, like I said, im a railroad buff, I can tell ya stuff when it comes to freight rail, and metro lines, but dont ask me about the NEC (North East Corridor).
