Union Pacific's Overland Route: the North Platte and Sidney Subdivisions

Welcome to the third segment in Union Pacific's Overland Route: America's Original Superhighway, by the Thornapple River Rail Series.
In this miniseries, part of our Superhighway specials, we're touring the entire Union Pacific portion of the first Transcontinental Railroad, long known as the Overland Route, nearly a thousand miles of railroad spanning from the Missouri River at Omaha, Nebraska to the Great Salt Lake at Ogden, Utah.
An incredible railroad, the original Transcontinental Railroad is today a superhighway of commerce, featuring dozens of freight trains of all types through the American heartland. From the lush framlands of the Midwest to the deserts of Wyoming and Utah, the railroad is as incredible and unique as any other.
In this third segment, covering the North Platte and Sidney Subdivisons, we'll begin just east of North Platte at UP's new Machine Vision Defect Detector. Then we'll progress through the Bailey Yard Terminal, before covering the Sidney Sub, taking us all the way to Cheyenne.

You have the best looking rail fan videos on the Tube. I love U P trains even though my Uncle Raymond and Grand Dad worked for predecessors to BNSF Burlington Route and Santa Fe. My uncle was a fireman on the B.R. And Grandfather was a conductor on Santa Fe passenger trains back in the days of steam. Thanks!

It is gratifying to see that the North Platte yard has humping capabilities, as the whole purpose of a train is to consolidate traffic from disparate origins/destinations along common route segments. I hope that these humps are still in service at the time of this writing (2022).

My dad was a footplate man on the steam trains in the UK until they changed over to diesels, he then trained as a diesel shunter driver as he was to old to drive passenger trains
