Cars reflect effect of rain. Even in rainy time cars look very interesting. More colorful and and contrast. Containers, box and tank cars look like recently washed and polished.

Always amazing to me how much raw power the engines have to pull that many cars up the mountains.

this is one of my favorite spots on the pass. i like the fact that you can see one train in two tunnels if you walk a little more towards the one in this video.

An april storm blasts some double-stack container cars down and causes derailment. I've heard this news just in Germany. Sometimes it happens here with unloaded trucks on motorway-bridges. The double-stack cars, you show in the end of the video, are working like a high sail on a small track!

Ha, rail traffic is expected to increase because of track work on the Canyon Sub through Portola. Also, plans to run Capitol Corridor trains from Sacramento to Reno are in the works once we get the new equipment from the East.

I foamed, er ah 'documented' rail action over the pass in the early - mid seventies. SP ruled the pass then with 100+ car trains sporting end and swing helpers. SD 40's, 45.s 45 T-s, UP SD 40 - 2's. up to 40 trains a day. Solid reefer blocks. Man, those 20 Cyl. 645's blasting up to Norden. You could feel the power in your gut! Would stay in Truckee or Reno (rolling the bones at Harrah's). All but memories now. At least I had sense to buy UP stock in 1985. I bought 1200 shares @ I think $14 bucks per.
@swede134411 жыл бұрын
Yes, the SP used to push the envelope and max out their trains over the Sierras. The result, they went through locomotives like crazy. UP does things different and over amps the power. Your decision to buy stock at that price in the UP is likely the best that you have ever made, especially at about $165 per share now.

You need to use a matte box. Helps to keep the rain off the camera lens.

Being old school rail fanner, I would do the video away from he tracks and so that the people could see what the cars and locomotives look like, otherwise very good

engineer sounds a "- o o" at the beginning of the video before it got to you. after the locomotive passes there is a series of blasts. was that just a warning to you after they saw you/your camera? i didn't see a road crossing in any of the frames.

Aside from the modern awning, the tunnel in the foreground looks pretty old. Is this the original Donner Pass road bed laid down in the 1860's? Thanks.

Interesting. I hadn't heard about the detours from the Canyon. We'll see if that Sac-Reno Train ever really comes to life. I've heard rumors but I'm still skeptical of it ever happening.

why no brake van on the back are all wagons braked from the cab
@lukebccb955210 жыл бұрын
You're joking right? Brake vans ("caboose" in Yank terminology) hasn't been used in decades anywhere in the world except for India. And ALL wagons have brakes since the advent of the air brakes over 130 years ago.

@47485ksc10 жыл бұрын
lukebccb Except Russia. They have yet to invent those things. Just check out those KZbin videos of car crashes in Russia. Hell, half the big-rigs appear to have no brakes as they plow through traffic jams. Vodka good. I miss those cabooses. One hot summer day at Warren, California appx. 1981 (outside Mojave) I was hanging by the tracks when a brakeman in a caboose hollered, "You look hot and thirsty!" and tossed me a sixer of those small, plastic water bottles as he passed. Half of them tore open when they hit the ballast but I chugged the other 3. Ice-ass cold! "There's something about a train..." (AmTrak's old slogan)
