Union Station - Worcester Massachusetts - Train and Bus Station

Union Station in Worcester Massachusetts is a beautiful building built in 1911. It was used until the early 1970s, at which point it was abandoned and trashed. It wasn't until 2000 that it was re-opened, freshly repaired, painted, and cared for. A bus station was added alongside it.
Back in the late 1980s / early 1990s Union Station was used by local college students as an impromptu film set for apocalyptic / dystopian movies. It really was that awful looking. So it's quite impressive how gorgeous it is nowadays.
Since the station is so old, it was set up for lower traffic service. Only one train at a time can be at the station. Also, the pickup area is fairly small. There's just one short stretch in front of the main doors. When a train gets in, cars have to wait in a long line to get in to the pickup area.
Union Station is located on a rotary, and you can't get directly to the train station from the rotary. Someone coming through the rotary has to go out of the rotary, loop around in the city streets, and come back to the train station.
Union Station has a small sitting area in front of it (across the pick-up/drop-off road) with a statue of Christopher Columbus and a few benches.
Beautiful architecture. Well worth a visit.

They did a great job fixing union station,,I stayed in there in the 1980s when I was homeless,,,it was vacant for a be few years

I'm so sorry to hear about your challenges in the 80s. Hopefully life is better for you now. Yes, they really did a wonderful job with Union Station, to save it from being demolished.

Planning a trip to w/o and Amtrak says they don’t provide service between back bay and wo? … why not? Making planning without a car impossible.

Worcester and this general region have always had challenges with public transportation, parking, driving easily from one place to another, etc. They are trying to make it better but clearly it isn't quite there. My son tries to use the bus system and hits challenge after challenge. The trains into Boston can have just as many issues.
