Phenomenal overview! Thanks for sharing Kentucky Steam’s vision. This organization’s mission is so much bigger than rEsToRiNg iT aNd RuNnInG iT oN tHe MaInLiNe. If it all comes together, this entire region will be impacted in a huge, positive way that hasn’t been since the last coal boom in the late 80s/early 90s.

Congrats to Jason and crew for getting those grants; OMG they are difficult to write and apply for a major accomplishment for sure! Many thanks to Jason for his great introduction. Thanks for the video! Looking forward to the choochoo nerdery, but so so important to remember that steam trains only occasionally pay for themselves and a nonprofit still needs its balance sheet to balance. sounds like Kentucky Steam are making it happen and I'm excited to see what comes of it. Side note: As part of "being the progress," if you have accounting/finance/fundraising skills, those can be volunteered and are often sorely needed. There's a lot to the business side of rail preservation (or KZbin :) ) that many of us never see. Thanks again!

A lot of historic ships rent out large spaces on the ship (like the fantail or stern deck) for parties, weddings, ceremonies and things like that because it makes money and keeps funding up for restorations.

Really, it's such a brilliant concept. The sad part is, it's not the first time an organization has gotten together and decided to create this complex of revenue and interest creation. It's just the first time it's actually happening, at least during our lifetimes. I dare to say the last time something of this nature occurred would have been when Steamtown moved to Scranton Pennsylvania and was absorbed by the National Park Service. I have my opinions on that, but I'll keep them to myself... This scenario on the other hand is brilliant and I look forward to seeing what the future brings for Ravenna and the 2716.

Nice jab at my hometown Steam Program (SLSTA) but money was not the only reason for the 1522's retirement. Don Wirth who was the head of the St. Louis Steam Train Assocation has talked about the history of the program and how messy it was. Ironically a good chunk of the issue came from the things outside of their control.
@Hyce777
@Hyce777 2 ай бұрын
I honest to god didn't mean to make a jab at any group, I grabbed the first locomotive that once ran that got parked that came into my head. I spent a lot of time running 1522 in TRS2004, so, that was where the brain went. I have no knowledge of why it got retired or not. Just wanted a touch of B roll in the moment. My apologies.

@@Hyce777 No worries. You're fine. My dad rode on her final excursion in 2002, and I have talked with the former crew. Money was a big part of her retirement, but like I said on the Discord, not in the way many people think. There was also the fact that at the time of her retirement VSH Cameras were becoming more of a thing so more people wanted to film her rather than ride behind her. Some of the crew is still bitter to this day that she was forced to retire, and without getting into all the Government stuff they had to deal with since the 1522 was at the time owned by the Missouri State Government. Needless to say it was messy.

Good to hear that they have a long term plan that includes trains, but isn't only about trains. Diversification is key. We had a heritage railway here that was doing great thing, but they didn't own the station or the tracks they were on... The town came after them for back taxes and now the thing is closed with the equipment sold off or scrapped. Google the York Durham Heritage Railway. It's sad. But you need a viable business plan that keeps the lights on and lets you do the train thing at the same time.

4:00 that is basically what happened to N&W 1218, its the reason she likely will never run again, alot of her parts got lost. If you ever get a chance, go look at her Drivers side, She is missing a bunch of Valve gear components, Her boiler is gutted, her superheater array was lost in the move back to Roanoke even, and that is a BIG part to try and replace.

Can I recommend a new series for you to cover a topic that I feel could do with your special touch? Railroad accidents and mishaps. Yes, I know, there are a lot of other channels that cover it, I just tried watching Plainly Difficult do another video covering the East Palestine derailment (nothing against him, he is a very good content creator, but I had to stop before the cockatoo screams over his animations he used to describe what was going on) and I have watched many of Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions. They are both excellent creators, but I can’t help but feel that they lack the intimate knowledge and perspective from someone who worked on the railroad, can convey their deep love of the railroad in spite of the accidents that claim lives and can better explain what led up to the accident and what happened following the accidents. So many times we’ve heard about the Kenosha incident on your streams and videos, but it would be nice to get a more focused video on them. And I’d like to see a video from you on both Cajon Pass runaway train accidents.

Less often than you'd think. CNC is great for crazy off the wall complex, or batches of similar things. There's not really a lot of either on a steam locomotive. Some of the appliance rebuilders have CNC machines but that's about all I've heard of. Just faster to do it manually otherwise.

It's a shame how people in the community with voices that are listened to by maybe ones without great 'intentions?' just, that people can push back on a not for profit organization which has completely open books, they can make a stink about people getting paid or generating revenue to maintain operations and your own personal bills, just.. they should really get educated before making a stink. It's NOT easy and it's definitely NOT CHEAP!! Nice job with the rail yard!!!
