In this video we use peroxide to create unique textural effects. The hair peroxide I used was 20 Vol 6% cream, but any bleaching agent will do.
Two Art Spectrum water colour paints were used including Yellow and Red, on Water Colour Rough 350gsm paper. I recommend using old brushes for this as the peroxide will eat away at the bristles and damage your nice brushes.

Just want to remind people, crucially: when experimenting with household cleaning products & watercolors, NEVER MIX BLEACH & VINEGAR (or vinegar-containing cleaning solutions). This combination produces chlorine gas, which is an extremely dangerous toxin which has been used as a chemical weapon. These are both liquid cleaners most people have lying around, so (while it’s not exactly uncommon knowledge that these products shouldn’t be mixed) it’s way too easy for me to imagine someone just tossing a bunch of stuff together without considering the chemistry it might produce, & the last thing I’d want is for arts & crafts time to become a trip to the ER.

Thank you so much for the warning! That’s really important, specially for those of us who like to experiment 🙏💙

Definitely a warning for the likes of me Matthew...thank you. I was always very good at English...not bad at art, but absolutely rubbish at chemistry. 😩😄

There are so many ways to create textures in watercolor without resorting to using harsh chemicals. In fact, I can't think of one good reason why anyone would want to ruin their artwork by doing so.

I'm watching this on my phone, and I was sitting here thinking "Why has she drawn a diagonal pencil mark across the paper?" 🤔 then.... a minute in I realised it's a hair from my cat 😺 😂

Been there, done that, and then once I removed the cat hair realized - "Oh, I liked that better there. Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty..."

Just a reminder, please don't leave your brushes sitting in the water. It will eventually ruin them because water seeps into the barrel and prevents them from drying out properly. Maybe if you are going to try this use some cheap brushes.

Yikes. It looks lovely but as I watched I started worrying about the effects of breathing in the fumes. Try oxy clean powder. Safer, still a bleaching agent and you can sprinkle it like salt.

Is it hydrogen peroxide? Does this cause the paper to deteriorate over time?
@GabysArtStudio

It’s just peroxide for your hair. If you use paper thick enough it dries before deteriorating the sheet. This was 300 gsm paper 😊👍
