Agree with the alpha being number 1. Just does everything right, and for shooting, it's the best feeling boot I've tried. The upper isn't the softest, but that's what makes it great, because it gives the structure and lockdown. And on your feet, it's one of the few boots that just disappears. The best word I can use to describe it is Connected: Connected to the ground, the boot, and the ball. One thing I've found, depending on the colourway, the coating of the upper is slightly different. The main issue I have with the Vapor 16's is that because its so ridiculously soft, there isn't much structure and lockdown. Plus the zoom air, whilst nice and a great experience, you feel higher up off the ground compared to other boots. The Puma Ultra's, I don't know, they just don't feel special. They don't feel as snug, and I'm just not getting any 'wow' factor from the upper.

@@K1rkHammet I don't think they feel cheap. It's super soft, and probably the most comfortable upper on the list, and the knitted collar is the best I've ever felt. It just doesn't feel special. There's no snug sensation, or structural feeling. It's just there.

the alpha is just goated. it gets away with a wider shape because of the zeroglide. the upper feels amazing too just shooting with that second-skin type upper is so fun

I’ve loved my MIJ alphas, and if you look around you can definitely find them just under $200. The boot has so much going for it and also not mentioned is the zero glide under the tongue. Just fantastic.

The Vapor 16 has been fabulous to me. The way the upper immediately contours to the shape of my foot out of the box makes it a standout. The fit is snug and without distractions, imo one of the best fitting boots that I ever tried from heel to toes. A true second skin and socklike experience. Touch and feel for the ball is superb, comfort and break-in is the best of any Mercurial (and I have had PLENTY of Mercurials on my feet). The underfoot cushioning from the air zoom is strangely smooth, it’s a nice feeling definitely improved upon the Vapor 15s zoom unit that sometimes came off as lumpy. It’s quickly become a favorite of mine. I dare say it’s the best knitted Mercurial ever, including the epic Flyknit Ultra. Maybe I’m still blinded by the novelty of a new boot, but I’m beginning to doubt that to be the case. Every time I slip them on it’s an “aww yeah” type of feeling.

Couldn't agree more - it's a phenomenal boot in my book too. I'm with you in saying it might be the best knitted Merc ever. Or, at least, it's the 16 or the 13 for me. I just think that as a SPEED boot, the tooling is lacking a little stiffness in the forefoot and the upper could do with a bit more lockdown to help with the responsive sensation as you push off. From a more general, holistic point of view though, it's definitely one of the best new boots of the year for me - alongside the F50 Elite Messi and Sokito Scudetta. /Jay

Personally I think the Alpha Elites are a more durable pair of boots than its MIJ counterpart due to it's "stiffer" upper. My mate's Alpha MIJ breaks down much faster & i play more games than him!

I prefer the elites, at least for AG. The less stiff soleplate puts less strain on the feet. The upper is about 1mm thicker so dampens the sting a bit more, but still gives a close touch.

Jay, doesn’t it seem crazy that none of these boots come even close to how light previous speed boot generations were? Such as the 2014-15 adidas F50 that were around 150 grams. Or even the 2011 adidas prime which were closer to 140 grams? This generation of speed boots feels notably heavier to me and personally does impact how light and mobile I feel.

No surprises for number 1. They're just so damn good. We should hopefully see the update for the Alpha towards the end of this year. Sokito have done really well for themselves too!!

@@tn7328 It's just an educated guess. The Morelia II refreshes every 5 years, 3 for the Morelia Neo, and whichever other boot is normally two years. The first Alpha came out towards the end of 2022, therefore it stands to reason that the next model should be out towards the end of the year (in Japan at least, Europe a bit later)

Then I’d probably go for either the Mizuno Alpha or PUMA Ultra - the Carbon if you want it to be really responsive when you push off, and the Ultimate if you also prefer slightly more flexibility for a bit of an agile feel too.

I'd definitely go for the dedicated AG variation to be honest - it's much better both for performance but especially also for safety. I'd try not to use my FG Alphas on AG. /Jay
