I work at a grocery store and there's a couple who comes in and they're both hard of hearing or maybe deaf and I felt the need to be able to communicate with them. Two other people came through my line today who were deaf. There aren't any classes to learn ASL in my town, so these videos are very encouraging and helpful. Thank you for helping me get started.

Yeah agreed he did put a lot of effort into this the one small problem I have is that he could have given us the ability to enable closed captions because a lot of the time he uses his example sentences and points out common mistakes that people make while signing these that they shouldn't honestly that was my one small criticism was that he should turn on closed captions so that we have the ability to understand what he's saying when he clarifies that but other than that this video is perfect honestly I give it a thumbs up

This is really useful. There are some signs that I have been signing slightly wrong but it matters to me because when you get down to the essence of learning a language; every little detail counts. I have a friend who is deaf-blind and sometimes he can’t see me well so I’m really motivated to make sure I am signing crisp, clear, and accurate, so I really appreciate these videos

I just enrolled in an ASL course at a nearby college as an continuing education class. It only meets two days a week, and I wish it was a daily class! Your videos provides me with much needed practice in between lessons, and they're truly helpful, especially since I don't have anyone to practice with. I've always wanted to learn ASL, and I'm super excited!

I’m enjoying this tutorial. As a hearing person, I was taught very basic ASL when I was young. I’m currently looking into taking ASL at my university in the fall. Although, My biggest fear is that the signing is so quick that I’m not always sure what I’m seeing, or that I’m repeating it incorrectly. I’m definitely going to subscribe to this channel and hope I can catch on. Thank you for the time you’ve put into sharing your knowledge with people who want to learn.

Hi, I'm Faith. I'm hearing and I've just attended Basic Sign Language class. We called it Sarawak Sign Language (English, East Malaysia). The structure is probably similar to ASL or other variants, but most importantly, I think is the deaf culture that I need to understand to sign better. I like the lessons, and will try to complete watching all. Thanks for the time and effort.

So many tutorials on KZbin @.@ your tutorials have helped me out more than many others, even if i do wish i was a bit faster so i could catch the faster signs... She signs so damn fast o.o and I'm fairly sure i screwed up Nixi with something else :/ but outside of my short-comings as a ASL learner, your tutorials have helped alot... This is just a very long-winded way of saying thank you xD and besides that, she seemed to be really happy when she learned i was learning ASL so i could talk with her :D

Since this is a learning video you should really allow us to enable closed captions because you give a lot of example sentences and try to clarify mistakes that we could be making that we shouldn't but a lot of the time that makes it a little unclear of which way is the correct way of signing the word one really good example of this was when there was the word key terms in the background for that section I couldn't tell at all what you were trying to say or what the key terms were so please allow closed captions please and thank you

They don't have ASL classes around me and I've always been interested in learning. I really just started pushing myself to learn recently since my cousin has favored using ASL instead of talking. They can talk perfectly fine and hear fine, they just prefer signing. Which I think is awesome but I want to know how to have a conversation! Thanks, Joe!

In my area, the county (Wake County, NC) offers classes through the Parks & Recreation system, from tai chi and yoga to cooking classes and beginner language courses, child rearing, EMT training, you name it. Check everywhere you can think of, and ask at your local library. Often times community colleges and technical schools will have ASL classes if there's a demand for them; if your area doesn't have any available, you could always start a petition online and get a class started. if there's enough demand, one may be created and if it's successful, they may choose to keep it. Just be aware that they're usually anywhere from $45 for beginner level to $300 for upper levels, depending on the size of the class, the length (weeks? months?), and the attendance. Classes at community colleges and technical schools tend to be a little more expensive because you're not a student and they expect you to pay certain fees, whereas classes through the Parks & Rec tend to be cheap(ish) because they're casual classes offered without grades. Good luck :)

Hi Joe! Just wondering, I saw "hard of hearing" was in here. I've been told by my teachers that's not a great way to describe someone because it implies deafness as a disability--in your experience though, do some members of the Deaf community use it to describe themselves? For example, would someone with a hearing aid use this? Or is it all on a personal basis?
@hithisismira
@hithisismira 6 жыл бұрын
From what I'm told, "hard of hearing" is the PC term, "hearing impaired" is the offensive term
@candice_ecidnac
@candice_ecidnac 6 жыл бұрын
Also "hard of hearing" implies some level of hearing whereas "deaf" [usually] means no hearing, unless they choose to further specify (e.g. "deaf" vs. "profoundly deaf"). It's partially up to the individual and how they choose to identify, whether it's "hard of hearing", "hearing impaired", "born deaf", "partially deaf", "profoundly deaf", et al. I suppose within any community there are vocabulary rules dependent upon the individual; I've got gay friends who call themselves "queer" whereas I also know people who are offended by being called "queer", so it's really up to the person. If you're unsure, ask. Most people would rather let you know so you can go from there, rather than you just operating on a [possibly incorrect] assumption.

+Alyx Chisholm I admit that is what brought me to this video also. Hahaha. I guess switched at birth kind of brought awareness to the deaf community. I'm learning ASL on my own because I've always wanted to learn it. I was wondering, I see you using your left hand for solo signs like "hold on" and whatnot. I was wondering if it changes the meaning if I used my right hand for signs like that
@candice_ecidnac
@candice_ecidnac 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the sign but ASL is mostly based on the right hand or both hands. Usually a sign will not mean the same thing if done with a different hand; ASL is precise, so changing your hand shape slightly or using a different hand can drastically change what you're saying.

You know you can look stuff up, right? It takes seconds to look it up and you'd have your answer immediately, instead of waiting a month+ for someone to answer your question on KZbin (and it doesn't look like an answer from the channel is forthcoming). Their Facebook page (facebook.com/aslthatcommunity/) does not appear to be regularly maintained; they have a group (facebook.com/groups/ASLTHAT/about/) but it's for FLUENT ASL users and interpreters, and the description specifies that it is NOT for teaching purposes. There is a kids page (facebook.com/aslthatkids/?ref=br_rs) but again, it's for the deaf community (deaf children and children of deaf parents, 18 and under) to interact with each other, not for teaching purposes. You can search online for other deaf communities. Good luck finding the resources you need.

While I see that a lot of effort when into this, as a hearing person with absolutely zero ASL experience, I found this video a bit confusing. Why not just tell us what the signs are? Some of them seem to have a lot of going on, multiple steps/stages, and I would like to know which part specifically is the sign being talked about. For example the sign for "Hold-On'" at 5:59 has like 10 steps. You're telling me all of that is Hold on?? What am I missing here, or in-fact, what should I be looking for?

“Hold on” is literally just the dominate index finger, palm forward, and facing the person you are telling to hold on. When he turns he is giving an example. He turns to our right and waves his hands around in the ASL sign for “chat” or “conversation” then pretends somebody needs his attention. But he wants to finish his “conversation” so he does the ASL sign for “hold on” which is the index finger. Remember his video is suppose to be review, so it is assuming you’ve already known the vocabulary.
