Thanks for the kind feedback! Glad you find it useful review. Another way to get extra practice online and learn more variations is to watch native signers -- if you can interact live / at Deaf events, that's ideal. @jlostudio93974 жыл бұрын
Grammar in ASL is pretty confusing. I like to think of it being slightly backwards, like learning Spanish. Eventually you’ll start to know where you’re supposed to turn the words around rather than talk the way we normally would, if that helps. Or if you’ve ever watched something Star Wars, just think of Yoda talk. There’s also a video by another person, but I forget who. Just stay on KZbin and you might want to search ASL Sentence Structure. That one really helped me. Hope this helps you! 😊🥰 ❤️

When expressing excitement, can most signers tell whether or not I’m touching my chest when I sign it? I wanted to know if that’s a necessary part of expressing this (and other) sign(s), because it’s kinda uncomfortable to tap my boobs (or my chest generally) with my finger tips. Most of the other signs I’ve learned that touch the chest are bigger movements (“please,” for ex.) which don’t bother me. But if it’s something I definitely need to get over to learn ASL then I’ll work on getting over it! Thanks for all you do!
@ASLMeredith5 жыл бұрын
Ah, good question! It's important to note that you don't need to really PRESS or POKE your chest - it shouldn't be uncomfortable. The middle finger just grazes the body, barely perceptibly. It's fine if you barely touch; the point I was emphasizing in the video is that the sign is not produced entirely in neutral space. The location of the sign is the torso.

For one-handed signs, does it matter which hand is used?
@ASLMeredith7 жыл бұрын
Great question! I actually answered this in a past email newsletter, so I suggest you subscribe (aslmeredith.com has the link, this: goo.gl/forms/IxNl40w0VZoo91Yp1 ) for future helpful explanations! Here's the summary: You should use your dominant hand for most key movements, so if you're a righty, then go with your right hand! For more information, read on: The way it generally works is: If it's a one-handed sign, then just use your dominant hand (I use my right hand because I'm right-handed). If it's a two-handed sign where BOTH hands move symmetrically or in tandem, then it won't make a difference. If a two-handed sign where one hand moves and the other stays still--that's again where your dominant hand would do the moving while your non-dominant hand stays still. Of course, generally do what's comfortable (I know some righties who sign more comfortably left-dominant, or vice-versa), but simply aim to be CONSISTENT rather than switching back and forth from hand to hand. Hope that helps!

I have seen many different types of ASL and I am very confused. All of the the methods from person to person are drastically different from one another. My only analogy would be Ebonics in English. I guess there are more than one way to sign?
@ASLMeredith7 жыл бұрын
Yes, there may be more than one way! There is plenty of variation in ASL, just like there's variation (dialects, accents) English. There are ASL accents, regional versions of signs, Black ASL (Google Joseph Hill -- he's done a lot of research on it!), and so on. There are also differences in register (formal signing vs. casually with friends), which is a feature of spoken languages as well. ASL is a real, evolving, and spread-out language, so you may see variation from person to person. The more you interact with people, the more you'll pick up small variations on the same sign, and learn new ones :) Hope that helps! I covered this topic more in-depth in my email newsletter over the summer. how do you express you are feeling multiple emotions, would you just sign one after the other?
@ASLMeredith4 жыл бұрын
Yes, great question! To sign about items in a list (whether emotions, colors, snacks.. anything!) you can sign one after the other, adding in a slight pause and head nod between items. Think of this like a visual comma :)

Amazing! I have learned everything I know from your videos! I am wondering how you sign a word with double letters, so just a suggestion!
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leah, thanks for the kind comment! So glad you find these videos useful for learning :) Great question about double letters! I could certainly add this to my video list for the new year. In the meantime: Generally, you reproduce the letter's handshape in some way, though sometimes you may see a 'slide' movement instead. Different textbooks and different teachers give different "rules" to follow for double letters; there isn't one singular correct way. Vowels are almost always a "slide", while consonants.. you'll see a mix, and it may vary by position. Here's a good quora answer that summarizes some 'rules': www.quora.com/When-hand-spelling-ASL-how-do-you-sign-two-of-the-same-letters-like-in-good-or-steel But in your own class, use the style your teacher recommends!

this helps me so much to express my nervousness in signing to others. I do understand SL but i get really clammy when i hve to sign back
@ASLMeredith5 жыл бұрын
Hi Turon, thanks again for sharing. As noted, it's normally to get nervous, but with more time and exposure you'll improve and gain confidence! You can also improve your skills by practicing in the mirror or even recording yourself and watching it back, to see where you can get better. Either way - don't be afraid - keep practicing in actual conversations and that fear/nervousness will begin to subside.

1 thank you. 2 question. Is loving and love the same sign? If not what is the difference?

Some of these signs brought me back to my surfer root. Appropriately, 'Whats up?' and ''same as always' But the 'proud' sign made me think of FFXIV's Ball Dance emote.
