United Express E170 Economy Class - Pittsburgh to Chicago

My last trip in the year that was 2020 started with a rocky flight over to the Windy City aboard a United Express E170 in Economy Class operated by Republic Airways. When I say rocky, I mean it as Pittsburgh was receiving some extremely heavy snow that December morning which caused delays for our departure. I almost didn't even get to make it as one of the flight attendants took serious issue to me filming onboard and nearly threw me off the flight. Thankfully, the situation resolved itself somehow and after a deicing, the rest of the flight went off pretty smoothly. There's something about flying during a snowstorm that is so cool to me and seeing everything white outside just gets me so excited to wanna travel. What could've been a very uneventful flight just to shuttle me over to O'Hare turned into quite the experience, both good and bad. Hope you guys enjoy!

Loved the snowy footage, quite scenic. The behavior by the flight attendant was unacceptable. I understand if he didn't want to be filmed, but he did not need to threaten to kick you off the flight. Classical case of power tripping at this point. I definitely would have reported this to United as such employees who abuse their power can really ruin someone's travel plans. I was once flying to DEN and as I exited the aircraft and made my way down the jet bridge, I heard flight attendants comment "He was taking pictures of the seat. Like who does that?" and another one commented on my trip plan (FLL IAH DEN YYC) and implied how wierd I am. I was still walking down the jet bridge before I shouted back at them "It was the cheapest route and y'all don't fly nonstop from Florida to Canada"... They were silenced. I did email United about their incident and tho I didn't have video proof, they did send me a $300 flight credit certificate to make up for this situation. Was not expecting the latter but I was just disgusted with how callous the crew were when talking mess about customers within hearing distance.

So I used to work on that plane. I was a flight attendant for Shuttle America for a few years in the late 2000's. There was no rule then that filming couldn't be done. Unless for whatever reason the captain said so. I would report his/her behavior. Sorry not sorry. I let people take pictures, film do whatever. I didn't care. All I asked was no pictures of us (the entire crew) and not to interfere with our work. Sorry you had a crappy experience, but thanks for the nice views of the jet I miss.

I always enjoy your trip reports!! I do wish that UA would install the same type of seats that Republic uses, across the entire UAX fleet of E175s. The Republic E170 seats are AMAZINGLY comfortable!! The slimline seats that are currently in use on the 175s are about as comfortable as a park bench! Thanks for the report.

I truely despise cabin crew that are rude and power hungry like the one that threataned to kick you off. And, Chris, I can relate to you heavily. For even on a flight in Lufthansa Business Class, which was supposed to be one of my best flights ever, I was told off for filming by the cabin crew.

I wish the flight attendant could know better about the photography policy. I want to record my flights too when I go back to flying at some point. I never do it too often, but I’ll hopefully make it happen a little more sometime soon and I want to get lucky pretty much every time I make videos on board. And yes I’ve seen the flight in Florida that you went on last year so that’s why I know the next video is going to be a flight there.

Do you ever get flack for filming out the window? That’s all I ever do. Sometimes a quick cabin photo from my seat that’s it. I don’t care to do full trip reports but that’s just me. I have been filming for years now, with and without a window mount, and no one has given me crap for it.

All depends on what airlines operate out of the base they are assigned to. If Republic operates all 3 airlines out of a base, then they work all 3.

United customer service is a nightmare. Good example. Had a flight to Seattle from Asheville nc with a stop in Chicago the way up and dc the way back. On the way up on a cramped crj200 I had no problem with attendants letting me bring my 2k guitar onboard as tsa allows it regardless of airline policy’s as long as there is cost or luggage space. On the way back in dc a gate agent for United refused my boarding until the guitar was green checked and placed under the plane. I told her for 5 or so minutes what tsa policy’s are and provided documentation and she still refused. In order for me to board I checked my bag. At the the luggage trolley I handed it off the bag agents who threw it on the cart sideways and I herd a nice cracking noise. I got to Asheville and found my guitar iside with a broken head and damaged. I had the gate check lady’s name and spoke with United customer service who claimed they wouldn’t help me and and it was my fault. After a week of calls and complaints I gave up. Quickly decided the next time I use United I’m filming and refusing to cooperate if they can’t comply with tsa rules.

Son, maybe it's never occurred to you that not everyone likes the new style. The real shame is that the older videos were so well done. As a retired Republic flight attendant, I feel I need to address a couple of your points you made about filming on the flight. First it is Republic’s policy, not United’s policy to prohibit filming onboard. This is due to safety concerns for the crew and passengers. There have been flight crew assaulted, raped and even murdered by stalkers that due to being filmed. The evidence was found on the phone of the perpetrator. Next point is dealing with the Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) regarding passenger compliance. A FAR is a federal law. It states that passengers MUST comply with lighted signs, posted placards and crew member instructions. So when the flight attendant told you to delete the video and you did not, you broke the law. As far as him being in your words an a**hole, he actually let you off easy. He could have had the police come to the plane to have you delete the video. This is not heavy handed because you broke a federal law. And on a side note, why did you think it was appropriate behavior to argue with a flight attendant? My recommendation moving forward is to always comply with a flight attendant’s instructions regardless of your opinion. You don’t know what they know. And their first responsibility is for your safety. So any instructions from a flight attendant is due to safety of the passengers or security of the flight (9-11). Republic has some fine people working there.
