Honestly and first hand, the dynamics are extremely complex. For example, much of the elderly are in ill health and have never been far from Pokrovsk. I believe Kyiv was about a 20 hour train ride and that's just the beginning. In the end, they see themselves 3 countries away, broke and homeless in some huge foreign city. It's paralyzing. They force themselves to believe that the Russians aren't subhumans and won't (per Russian war doctrine) "Rape, Torture and Murder" them. Obviously, they're wrong.

It seems that Ukraine is commiting to the city defences again disregarding the surrounding areas. We have seen this over and over again, Kremina, Severodoneck, Bakhmut, Avdiivka. Always the same scrnario. The city is defended, the aggressor is surrounding it and basically builds condition for a cauldron. If the fileds are so difficult to defend then the aggressor must be incredibly skilled to do it in spite of this. With a very few exeptions Ukraine has never managed to get some fields and tree belts back. Why Ukrainians cannot defend these so effectively?
