One of the best home tours I have ever seen. They don't make homes like this anymore. Whoever designed the house was pretty much ahead of his time. The first floor fireplace, wow.

They are not allowed to make homes like this anymore, because of the materials they were using back then. We "can" replicate a facsimile of these houses, but using lawful, healthier construction materials. I designed many houses. For nearly 54 years now. Just the layout basic plans. Modern houses can be very different in style with no ornate decor and with plain woodwork and ceilings throughout.

Beautiful house and garden for an incredible price. My mother had a Victorian/Craftsman from the 1900s that I grew up in. Many of the features in this property were in that house. It would takes lots of painting and striping of 70's paneling to bring this beauty back to its full glory but I would love to do it...if it was located in the South. Maine has way too much snow and cold weather. Beautiful country though but I can't hack the cold.

$99k for this home is a steal! That would be a very small down payment in some areas. Refinish the wood detailing and floors and pump in $300k to upgrade the rest and you've got a very nice home. Insulate those beautiful stained glass windows too. Keep the all wood furniture. That's easily a pricey home when finished. Great potential. Excellent presentation!

I believe that the plain bedroom is for a servant. In addition to the plain bedroom, the plain back stairway to the kitchen is further proof of having had a servant. I spent my childhood in a majestic 3 story Victorian, (which was later knocked down/demolished by eminent domain law to build a new highway). We had ornate curved stairs too. Very ornate fireplaces, with tiered mantles which had beveled inlay-mirrors, original gas chandeliers, very fancy ceilings with huge light fixture medallions. So much more. Times change and beautiful things come to pass into memories.

I grew up in an 1880 farm house in western NY. We moved in 1977 so it wasn't quite a hundred years lol But many of the things you've shown we had. We had a root cellar instead of a cold room. Our home had a Franklin Stove in the basement that I (at 9) was in charge of banking for the night and getting up in the morning. We had a small fan on the stove but the rest of the house (2nd floor) was heated by heat rising! That was it!! It was freezing cold in the winter -literally! Our water glasses froze over night!! WE had a canning kitchen at the back of the house angled to catch the breeze just right.

The music and some of the clothing are what I love about the 70s. Cheap wood paneling and dropped hospital ceilings not so much. Especially not in extremely old houses like this one. Every time I see houses like this being pushed into modern day times I want to scream. I think the reason it's being sold so low is because it's gonna cost a lot more to fix it. Especially if it's restored. Not renovated. Restored to its formal glory. I wish I was rich. She would be lovely if she was mine. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Few things are more irritating than a realtor video on a 128-year-old house with no mention of lead paint, asbestos, condition of plumbing, and age of wiring. Since the house sold less than a year ago there's a fresh inspection report somewhere. I assume a local inspector was employed. What did they find? Asbestos was used to insulate steam pipes and lead paint wasn't banned in residential structures until 1978. Are there any asbestos shingles? Removal and disposal are expensive. Maybe the current owners didn't want to move across the country, or maybe the house needs all new plumbing and wiring and remediation of safety issues. Just because the electrical panel is modern doesn't mean some or even most circuits are still tube & post and given the age of this house its "modern" wiring could be 60 years old. Electrical wiring from 50+ years ago was rated for 50-year service life. If the house was rewired between 1960 and 1970 there's a chance it has aluminum wire, which is a proven and deadly fire hazard. The dead furnace should have been disclosed upfront. An oil-fired steam boiler for that house, with the install, plumbing ("some" steam lines still in place), and haul away is easily $20k. Where are all the radiators? Original radiators have a high chance of wearing lead paint. This home would have had at least a dozen. Original windows are pretty but not thermally efficient. Was the house ever insulated? What's the annual heating bill? It's not all bad. Fantastic floors in some rooms, the basement is epic, city water, metal roof (but what about the porch?), roomy and the house seems straight. Septic isn't a problem per se, but how old is the tank and sewage line? Modern septic systems are sized based on the number of bedrooms. Does the septic tank meet modern requirements? A new tank & lines would run about $5k. There's an obvious dearth of local buyers. Not a good sign in a village of fewer than 1,000 people. I'm looking at an easy $50k to fix all issues with high annual energy costs thereafter. If you want to entice people to move to remote northern Maine (100 miles from the ocean) there's got to be a lot more disclosure. Otherwise, why bother making the trip? I owned a home built in the early 20th and did a lot of work on it. Every question and problem I have with this vid comes from experience.
@BrisLS13 жыл бұрын
Your concerns are eye-opening. If anybody wants that house, I have the boiler for it in my basement here in Virginia. It works perfectly at burning $600 a month on oil in the winter. I will throw in the outdoor oil tank for free. I went with central air many years ago to reduce my bill to about $300 a month including all electric usage. I do wonder, why there aren't fire places all over that house? Surely, it did not include the boiler when built?

Not to mention termite damage, settling, inadequate structure, compromised structure often created from plumbing. I bought a farmhouse built in 1860, completely gutted it, redesigned it, doubled the square footage, modernized it for energy efficiency. While attempting to maintain the farmhouse feel, re-purposing some of the original character in the rebuild. Ultimately I could have built a new home quicker and cheaper but without all the character and heritage.
@hoppas773 жыл бұрын
And, that is why it is selling for 99,900. Yes, of course, it _may_ need all that work and some. If you are in the market for this style of home, then it is expected to cost a lot to update it at that selling price. This is not a turnkey home and will take a lot of time and money. I don't know where you can find an updated Victorian Home of this size for under $300 to 500k.. Probably much higher with the size of the lot and today's market. This is a video to showcase the home. When the right person (who wants to invest in this home ) comes along then the realtor will go into more detail about the home.. this is just a video to find that person/people.
