I agree. So many gorgeous older homes, mansions & cottages alike, are being destroyed by painting or tearing down irreplaceable woodwork. The newer generations seem to all want gray & white only. Really wish they wouldn't buy these homes & just build modern cookie cutter houses instead with one huge living area with white & gray bland interiors. My favorite era was the Arts & Crafts (1920s-1930s) period; losing the handcrafted wood detailed work by master craftsmen is a major loss of history. Done the right way, kitchens & bathrooms can be updated while still retaining the character and dignity of the original house.

@@southernlady8809 I share your sadness toward our lost history. I often shake my head upon seeing such cheap materials and corners cut in construction. You probably know this, but I’d like to say that often all is not lost. Usually the best materials and artifacts are stripped, sold and enjoyed again by other homeowners. Though not the same as restoring entire homes, many people are able to enjoy whatever has been salvaged.

Love the house! It reminds me of my great-grandparents house in a small town from the early 1900’s. They still had the original leaded glass windows, claw foot tubs, curved mahogany staircase and crystal doorknobs with skeleton keys. All the furniture was from 1920 and before. They had an orchard and a carriage house. I still have fond memories of my time spent there on vacations as a child and teenager in the 60’s and 70’s. It gave me appreciation for real wood and the importance of caring for things. I hope that the new owners don’t paint over everything.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely love it - and it really looking at it, renovation costs won't be that high. True, you might spend about the same as it costs to purchase, but by the time all is said & done, it would truly be worth so much more ! Finding a job in the area for hubby isn't easy, sadly. I've looked. You have so many properties that are what we're looking for (I just feel pulled to Maine) but the job situation is a deal breaker =(

I live in Maine and would never want to be anywhere else but….. the job situation is tough… you either have to come to this state with money, or be willing to work for low wages.. and be satisfied with that..it’s quite safe and beautiful and the seasons are delightful….but Maine is not going to offer top dollar in the income Dept…still, it’s so worth it, to be here..🙂

Definitely a beautiful house with great features waiting to be lovingly restored. The kitchen is large, take out the laundry and move it to the cold storage room, turn the barn into a gorgeous modern rustic great room barn style. Once the house is fully updated structurally, septics, electric, foundation, plumbing, lead and asbestos removal, heating and cooling, rotted wood and features replaced, roofing, insulation, windows repaired, I can see it being delightful. Need to add several modern full and half baths there. Expect to drop at least $300k there and rip down to the studs.
