The system is complicated? We said the same thing about Ten Hag’s system. The players are failing at basic things… basic football principles. Defending a set piece, that has nothing to do with a system. Running and intensity? That has nothing to do with a system. Passing the ball then running into space… basic football. Worry that if United don’t bring in 6-7 players at a time, the ones that have it like Garna, Dorgu will lose it and become like the others

Playing inverted fullbacks opens up passes into the I side forwards, having Dalot on the right would force Amad to run the channel, opposed to coming short. The 3421 is complex as it requires 3 players moving at once with great understanding of eachothers positioning. It's a very defensively good system with overloads in attack. You can't teach that in a matter of months. We also have to consider we have young and inconsistent players. I don't know why us Man Utd fans chase highs or lows, the reality is we are a mediocre team currently, that does not mean we can't flourish under the current management. The excitement of constantly rotating Management, player transfers, talking about trophies or catastrophic relegation captures attention, which affect judgement.

I’m not suggesting Amorim out but he can still be criticised- I’m not sure about inverted wing backs as well as inverted 10s… where is the width coming from? And then there’s a question of suitability- dalot is being hung out to dry, from being uniteds only consistent performer last season to this? It’s one thing to go from RB to RWB- but LWB is not for him and he’s being unfairly judged on it.

I've been saying this for months/years/seasons - EVERY TIME Bruno gets the ball or others get the ball he pushes his hands down to signal 'slow it down' - WHY WHY WHY? this is the premier league known for intensity... Bruno is the foundation of a LOT of problems - doesn't lead by example, gives the ball away, slows it all down, doesn't rally the players - HE is the common denominator of last few years over different managers and does very little for the TEAM - sure he scores a few, but that is 'moments'... not team work.

Utd fan for 61 years. None of these players are fit to wear the shirt. They need too much time to think when on the ball, they're scared to have the ball, they don't press, they stand still to receive the ball and then get closed down. It's so easy for every team to play against us because we're clueless at how to play. We need to scour the lower divisions for quality grafters and get shut of the majority of this dross.

One of the reasons our play is slow, the Centre Backs are taking too much touches before releasing the ball. The ball doesn’t need to be pinged to all three centre backs before the opposing wingback gets the ball. Things like this kills the intensity/speed of the game.

The one and only problem is we lack a dynamic midfielder from deep who will just dictate the pace of the game because our midfield is so static no real intelligent movement off the ball and that's why opponents find it way too easy to play and press us. Ederson from Atalanta should be the priority signing in the summer because he's a dynamic midfielder and a ball carrier

After yesterday, Ederson seems even better suited. He's got the balance between defense and progressive play right. Bruno doesn't have the positional discipline and defense. Mainoo doesn't have the aggression or progressive long passing. Without that sort of player, Ugarte is going to have fans turn on him. We need width and a progressive DM. Width can improve just by having a left footer on the left attack and right footer on the right attack...ie Wing back or AM. The progressive DM requires significant £££.

Because they have been told to hold onto the ball, keeping possession by the manager maybe? If you play football, you realise very quickly a lot of the good moments are instinctively executed. I think players are being asked to think twice before execution of a pass. It is maybe to build possession of Amorim stress so many times in the interviews, to keep the ball. But such players' thought process during the fast PL game creates hesitation. And hesitation reduces the speed of the play.

we are playing a more 5-2-3 now than a 3. Shows amorim isn’t willing to take as many chances but definitely kills the game especially when u play dalot of the left. You need your wingback to be able to bomb forward and play forward but we’ve seen time after time dalot is incapable of doing it on the left and when u bring in a new lwb and you stick on the right, that’s on the manager. I’m not a fan of hojlund in the slightest but you have to feel for him when he doesn’t get any opportunities to have a chance on goal because the wingbacks are incapable of putting the ball in a dangerous area. The football we play is probably as bad as LVG tbh as we play 6 defence minded players against teams that sit off in a low or mid block. Previously i was like it’s the players but it’s getting clearer it’s a clear mix of both the players and manager struggling.

I've watched Utd for a long time, and my favourite times were when Fergie simply told the players he trusted them to do what they had trained for and just go out and express themselves. Seems to me that the players are having all their natural ability trained out of them - most of them are playing in the wrong positions and have turned into little automatons who are afraid to be instinctive. It's like buying a guaranteed goal poaching striker, telling him he is now a wing back and oh, don't do any of that dribbling malarkey, stay in the prescribed area of the pitch and hold the line, bonus if you can just pass the ball really slowly backwards and forwards across the pitch.... Our strikers have no idea how to score, our defence panic at the least thing and are slow and sluggish. And our goalkeeper is no longer required to just stop goals but be good with his feet, sadly it seems to me the one we have right now can't even do that half the time. I'm depressed.

And this current lot are pretty dire.

The biggest issue I’ve noticed about Amorim is that he gets the squad balance all wrong most of the time and seems to misprofile his players. Dalot isn’t a wingback, yet consistently uses him on the left (his wrong side btw) and almost never subs him - if he wants to play Dalot, he should be used as a Wide cb in his system, he’s a defender after all, not an attacking player (which is what Wingbacks are). Not too long ago, he’s used Bruno as a 10, despite him lacking the footwork and ability to operate in tight spaces that is needed to play that role - he’s an 8 with an engine. He’s much better at playing in open space and playing towards the goal rather than with his back to goal (note that Ugarte is similar). He used Mazraoui as a wingback despite most of his best performances being when he played as a Wide cb - Maz is more effective at playing out and keeping the ball ticking rather than playing direct. Very technically gifted but isn’t really a natural attacker like, say, Amad or Dorgu. The biggest one is Mainoo imo, who isn’t a pivot player - he doesn’t have the engine, pace, or passing range to play there. Mainoo is a 10 (here me out here) as he has the ability to operate in tight spaces, play with his back to goal, and keeping the ball ticking. He’s very good at linking play and combining with his teammates, while also attacking the box. The reason you didn’t see this against Leicester is because there’s no width on the left (especially with Dalot playing there) and Hojlund doesn’t show himself for the ball (he’s also awful at linking and holding play). He has no options other than Amad who he’s usually isolated from. I’d also like to remind you that the pivot he usually plays (Bruno, Ugarte) aren’t good at keeping the ball and don’t tend to offer an option in possession, which further isolates Mainoo. Hojlund is a whole other issue altogether - he’s weak technically and his footballing Iq is low. He can’t even keep the ball properly. To which I don’t know why he plays over Zirkzee. With Zirkzee, you could see fluid rotations with the front 3 (IF you play him alongside Kobbie and Amad in the 10’s) and you keeping the ball more. The only reason I can see Zirkzee not playing his because he doesn’t have pace (which is a stupid reason, especially if your trying to play possession based football. It also isn’t enough of a reason to drop him, especially when it’s only a singular attribute). His system and play style aren’t the issue like it was with Ten hag, but his approach with his team selection (he plays 7 defensive players and 3 attackers - that’s not suitable for a 3 back which is naturally a very attacking formation) and the way he uses the players is really what’s letting him down. Just playing 2 less defenders (I.e playing more attacking wingbacks) would improve how man united play drastically and give you more balance. If he persists with being stubborn with his squad selection, it will eventually get him sacked. It’s something he really needs to work on if he wants to last more than 2 seasons at Man united. To which, I hope we really does last. He’s a good managerial prospect, and I can see him winning something with man united as long as begins picking the right teams in games.

I think thee issue is at least partly due to players still not used to this system. There might be certain combinations of players in certain positions that have chemistry together. But since the system is new there will be a lack of chemistry when players are moved around or another player steps into a position where the players were used to having someone else playing. They just don't have enough repetitions together in the system for decisions to be automated. That's at least one reason why they need to take an extra touch and think about what they are gonna do next in cerain situations. There's obviously more to it. But I think this is gonna keep on being an issue until next summer. But at least we have seen glimpses of the team playing well, which suggest that they are on the right track. The fact that the performances and results at OT are so much worse than our away record is really worrying though. To me that suggests the players are very sensitive to fans reactions. They feel like they are walking on egg shells and if they make a mistake they are gonna get the "Zirkzee treatment".

The players don't trust Amorim. And this comes from several ways. One, Amorim can implement his system all he wants, but if the players don't buy in, then they will revert back to their old ways. Old ways that had almost 3 years of entrenching under Ten Hag. Two, the captain and the senior players need to start holding themselves and the other players accountable. You have to have leaders on the pitch and in the locker room that can help steer the ship while the coach is planning. Three, and I cannot emphasize this enough, and it's as you said, Sam. The lack of intensity is abhorrent. 90 min of intensity. Keep the pressure on them. As Jimmy Johnson once said when he was coaching the University of Miami football team, "pour it on them and don't let them up!" Now, regarding the intensity, there are some players who do go all out for 90 min. But I would first look at the ages of those players. Amorim's system looks to be for players around 18-24. Anyone over that age could be a contributing factor to the lack of intensity. We keep getting bailed out in last minute performances and it will not last. Especially against teams who are really good. And let's be honest about it all. If you don't have the basics down pat, the fundamentals. then the product we currently have is what we get. If I had my way, a lot of these players would be gone and get players in that will execute the system. Young kids that are hungry. Ironically enough, they will probably be cheaper financially for us anyway. How did we maintain what we had under SAF? Getting kids young and hungry, then selling them right at the pinnacle of their careers for a boatload of money. And if we get them out of our academy then follow that pattern, we would be back where we belong.

I think the lack of intensity is partly a confidence issue, like we saw them trying to play a few quick balls last night, and several times they ended up losing the ball because they played the passes too quickly, or with the wrong pace on the ball, and I think the groans from the crowd make them even more reluctant to do it. But I think it's also partly because the players without the ball also aren't in good enough positions to receive the ball. Or maybe they aren't confident enough to put themselves in the position for quick passes in case they lose the ball. And so it's a kind of a catch-22 situation. But yea, it definitely does not seem like we won 6 of the last 8 games! And it won't feel like that until we are scoring the first goal and leading by 2-3 goals for a large portion of the game..

We were too slow up until the last half hour. We need more through balls to break the defensive line. One thing that is happening more now is cut backs from the line. Garnacho is shooting less from tight angles and instead hitting the line for a cut back. When those cut backs start reaching our players instead of theirs we'll score way more goals. The passing yesterday in that first half was way off, through out the team. Players were stretching to reach the ball under pressure and subsequently losing it, or passes going no where near, leaving players back tracking, it was shambolic!

Sam to put an explanation into why these players aren’t putting enough effort into intensity, from my POV unfortunately the culture at UTD has changed over the years. Intensity and hardwork primarily result from fear. Sure, every now and then you get ambitious players like Ronaldo who do this on their own. But unfortunately, we have not been brutal enough as a football club to sack the players who dont perform well. Including coaches, players and staff. People need to feel unsafe about their position. We need to keep them on their front foot. Sure we can support them in their hard times and be behind them but nobody should be safe from not performing and having the same job next year. That’s not just related to football club. It’s needed for any successful business.

They have lack of confidence and fear of losing the ball. The players are usually playing slow and scared to get more up front in attack that opponents can get a counter attack and scores. This has been the issue for many years now and the social media doesn’t help them at all. Social media towards Man Utd players is looking to kill any confidence that player does and destroys them morally for any ball lost, any bad touch and any sort of minimum error done as if the player only loses the ball, has no quality on the ball and making mistakes. Hate me or not, but this is how I saw it happen with every player at Man Utd and why so many of them down performs. Mass media too, is always super critical on players from Man Utd. Di Maria, De Gea, Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo, Lukaku, Pogba, Maguire, Antony and so on were huge victims of mass media and/or social media to make them seem as bad players, continuous meme on any mistake, over exaggerated reaction on certain things and a massive criticism to them which should’ve went to some other players or the team. That’s my take and until Man Utd that are manipulated by mass media and social media hate towards everyone from the team, they will not be able to counter attack the specific attack from mass media and social media towards Man Utd.

You can tell that all of the players except McGuire are playing in fear because they are afraid of making the wrong decisions. All the players are playing with Amorim in the corner of their eyes. They need confidence that they can make mistakes as the learn the system, but they don’t know the system viscerally enough for Amorim to allow mistakes because he doesn’t know whether it’s a failure in execution or a failure of understanding. It will take a month of practices to gain confidence that they understand the system - and in the PL basic understanding is not enough - only then will Amorim be able to praise them, and only then can they gain confidence to do things at full speed. It’s a dilemma. Hopefully February’s additional practice will help. But keep in mind that all this extra practice to learn the system also takes energy which reduces energy for games. A catch 22. Great sports (and arts) teachers use brutal criticism to evoke improvement. Once a certain ceiling is achieved, there is an effusively positive reaction by the coach- “You got it! That was beautiful! You are so talented! I trust you now! Go and do good.” But until that window is reached, Amorim must punish psychologically. Usually this all happens in the off- season. Unfortunately for ManU, it’s happening live and everyone gets to watch the ugly learning phase, and some players just can’t take the heat. Others apparently can (ie. Garnacho), but it’s not fun and you can tell in interviews. All the players are playing for the day when they understand so well that they can just play, and play fast.

If he wants them to transition faster, or switch sides faster, then he can train them and tell them to do it. But you cannot tell me that he doesn't have culpability for this at this point. We know the players can play faster, because they have done previously. If they're not doing the job, then drop them.
