In this tutorial, I'll be walking you through the Unity game engine (2019.3) so you can learn the basics. By the end, you will have created your own simple game.

All compiler errors have to be fixed before you can enter playmode! I get this error when I use the playmode

I followed along and made the terrain, applied the sand texture and imported the same tower. This was easy because of the pace of your realtime, unscripted video. Then I installed the Oculus Quest OVRPlayerController, put on my Quest and looked up at the tower. It was Awesome. As in... actual Awe. No hyperbole. I’d like to request that in your next video, you take this model a step further and add the colliders or ridged bodies necessary to make it so you can climb the stairs. I like that the video is a real-world, real-time experience with noise in the background, interruptions and minor mistakes along the way, exactly as we all do in everyday life. The important thing is that it’s fast and easy to shoot and edit so you can get content out quickly, without turning it into an elaborate, polished J.J.Abrams production (Lens flare and all.) Again, thanks SO much. I felt so triumphant when I looked up at that tower. Now I really want to climb those stairs.

Regarding collision for the tower, if you go to the import settings of the model (shown in the Inspector on the right at 20:26) you can check the box "Generate Colliders" to have it automatically import the model with a Mesh Collider attached. However, according to the Unity manual, you should not do this if you're importing a model that you intend to have move around.

Hey, i'm pretty new to this (hence why i'm here, cheers for the tutorial!!), just wanted to ask when you make your terrain object it's almost instant, where as mine starts baking stuff. Is that to do with lighting? I'm on a desktop machine with AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 32gb Ram and an RTX2070 so although it's not a super machine it's not bad.. Guessing it must be some settings I need to change? Cheers in advance :-)

Hi. Yes the baking is Unity calculating the lighting for the scene. Baking is a method of calculating this lighting. You can read more about it here: docs.unity3d.com/Manual/LightMode-Baked.html You can turn it off if you wish too. Also, your PC is more powerful than mine so your baking time should be faster than mine :)

Double click on the sand texture and it will automatically paint the entire terrain without doing it by brush

if you are not using the asset from that pack that contains the error, it shouldn't be an issue. just click clear in console and you should be fine.

I am on Unity 2019.3 as well. When I added the FPSController it gave me an error in the SimpleActivatorMenu.cs script forcing me to use UnityEngine.UI.Text instead of GUIText. How come you did not experience this?

You need to change the SimpleActivatorMenu.cs located at the standard assets folder of your project (just search on start menu search bar, I think you'll find it). Open it with Microsoft visual studio, locate the line at the top that says "using System;" right at the top, make another empty line after that one by pressing enter and write "using UnityEngine.UI;" Then somewhere in the middle of the whole page (a little bit to the top) locate 2 lines written in green, right under that second line you'll have to change it to "public Text camSwitchButton;" it'll be similar to the before state, you'll basically have to delete what comes before the word 'Text' and you're done, just save it and run your project again :)

Quick question... after I import the standard assets and try to put the first person character in there, I get an error saying "All compiler errors must be fixed before you can enter playmode." and under the console tab it says, 'GUITexture has been removed. Use UI.Image instead.' when I try playing the game. Not sure what UI images are but do you know what to do? Thanks

This is most likely just an error since the Standard assets are from a couple years ago and things have changed since. You should be able to click 'clear' in the console and be able to play.

@@ayefkay So I tested it out. Simply importing the standard assets into the 2019 version gives that error and makes it so that you can't play the game. Clearing the console doesn't work until the assets are removed from the project

A video for fixing the prefab since the updates have broken it would be great. I tried and failed. Had to use a prefab from an FPS controller instead. Currently, you drop in the character and the game locks up because the script class names have changed.

@@agnichatian When I edited the broken script using the info about GUIText in this article: answers.unity.com/questions/1638555/guitexture-adn-guitext-are-obsolete-standard-asset.html then it fixed the "script won't load" error, too. Not sure why, exactly, but it did. Maybe something in the outdated script was preventing the loading of the other ones.

If you have another camera in your scene, like the original Main Camera, delete it. We only want 1 camera and that's the one on the FPSController.

I added the FPSController and right when I pressed play it gave me 4 Script errors saying component at index 3 could not be loaded when loading game object ‘CCTVCamera’ removing it! then the other was ‘Handleheld camera’ , ResetterUi and Main Camera is anyone able to help

How did you get the Starndard Assets to work on 2019.3? they are for 2017. Using 2019.3 throws this error for me: Assets\Standard Assets\Utility\SimpleActivatorMenu.cs(10,16): error CS0619: 'GUIText' is obsolete: 'GUIText has been removed. Use UI.Text instead.' Among other errors. And it just wont go.

Two changes to be made in SimpleActivatorMenu.cs file: 1. Add using UnityEngine.UI; 2. Replace GUIText with Text. It will work. Hope this will solve your issue. Good Luck!

@J.Mod I actually got mine working but it might not be a favourable option. I changed the install I was using to 2018.4. I think the errors were because of something 2019.3 didnt support so just going back in time worked fine. Sad to say that I cant just install 2019.2 and I have to go back to 2018.4. But it is relatively the same interface.

I had the same problem, and it's because the Standard Assets Package that you download in the tutorial is outdated. To fix this, double click on the error message, which should open the .cs file with the code. Then: 1. Add "using UnityEngine.UI;" at the beginning of the .cs file (case sensitive, no quotes, and don't forget the semicolon). 2. Replace GUIText with just Text (should be on line 12 of the code). 3. Save the file and go back to your project should fix it.
